Blood moon eclipse: Night of April 14-15

Photographers and astronomy fans in North America are gearing up for a rare meteorological event the night of April 14-15. According to Sky and Telescope magazine, on April 15th, the lunar eclipse will begin around 1:20am ET. When the moon passes through the Earth’s shadow, it causes the moon to look very unusual for a short period of time. This event is called a lunar eclipse, and it occurs roughly twice a year. There’s one viewable to folks outside of North America on June 15, so sit back and learn more about how lunar eclipses work in this video! This version of the video is presented in several formats of stereoscopic 3D that can be viewed by many kinds of 3D devices, including common red/blue paper glasses that you might have lying around! End of the Show: May 2012 Annular Eclipse

Photographing the annular solar eclipse recently was a great challenge and a fun adventure. If you’ve yet to photograph a solar eclipse I highly recommend it. Not only is the sight of the eclipse amazing, there is invariably a great energy in the air from other photographers and viewers. This photo was taken toward the end of the eclipse after most people left. A word to the wise and a pro tip: never leave until the last bit of light has faded. Only at the tail end of the eclipse did the sun dip down into the clouds. The result was a much more dramatic image.
