Google Earth Model of Machu Picchu

28 Oct

A detailed 3D Google Earth model of the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu has been created using data from a laser scan of the site conducted by the University of Arkansas (see below). The model contains every building, every structure and every terrace in the entire city and is accurate to within 10cm (4″) over most of the site. The model also includes all structures and terraces at the top of Wayna Picchu, the mountain that is in the background in most photos of Machu Picchu. The video includes a series of photos of Machu Picchu together with screen shots of the model to show the accuracy of the model. (The dark coloured texturing of the grass etc. is taken directly from the Google Earth satellite image, which is required by Google.) There is a stereoscopic 3D version of the video at www.youtube.com Data developed under the authority of the Instituto Nacional de Cultura, Vladimir Dávila – Arquitecto del PAN Machu Picchu, Director del PAN Machu Picchu Direccion Regional de Cultura Cusco and Fernando Astete – National Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu. Data acquired, processed and distributed by the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies staff (Snow Winters, Malcolm Williamson and Katie Simon) and by students in the 2009 Cotsen Institute for Archaeology (UCLA) Cuzco/Machu Picchu Field School, Alexei Vranich Director. Created by Peter Olsen, Brighton-le-Sands, Sydney, Australia.

Sound of the Earth: Vinyl Globe Plays Music of the World

24 Oct

[ By Steph in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

This is more than just a model of the globe: it’s a spherical record player that will produce the sounds of a particular region when spun. The Sound of the Earth by Yuri Suzuki is just one of the designer’s incredibly innovative sonic products and installations. Suzuki spent four years traveling the world to collect samples of folk songs, national anthems and other audio.

Referring to the globe as ‘an aural journey around the world in 30 minutes,’ Suzuki explains that he wanted to bring all of the music of his travels together in one place.

Other projects include Barcode Book, which tells a story through illustrations made with bar codes, which are scanned with a hand-held reader, and Sound Taxi. The latter project is a vintage taxi equipped with a microphone that records urban sounds like traffic, sirens and construction work, and uses them to generate unique music in real time, which is played via 67 built-in speakers and big, shiny Indian horns mounted on the roof and hood.

“A few years ago my hard drive crashed and I lost my entire 500GB music collection,” Suzuki told The Guardian. “From then on, music held in physical objects seemed safer.”

Fire | Water | Earth

03 Aug

Heather was over.  We shot three quick concepts for no particular rhyme or reason.  The three element theme was a total coincidence.

Fire and water are obvious, leave a comment about why I think the third image might symbolize earth.

PS – these were shot one day before Heather had her scalp bic’d, by the amazing Steven Robertson, for what might be destined to be one of my favorite shoots this year… coming soon!
