Unstealable Bike: Theft-Proof Bicycle Frame Doubles as Lock

If you are sick of worrying about your bike being stolen or taking a lock with you wherever you go, this design will solve both of those every problems faced by bicyclists around the world.

In less than 20 seconds, the Unstealable Bike‘s locking system can be deployed by unlatching and rotating two pieces of the frame, then sliding out and using the seat bar to connect and secure those two parts.

Unlike most quick-release seats, the ability to slide out the bar becomes an asset rather than a liability in this case, making it possible to lock up your bicycle with one of its most frequently-stolen pieces.

The scale of the components employed makes it easy to attach the cycle to anything from a slim signpost to a thick tree.

Created by a team of three engineers, the bike is currently a prototype and seeking funding for mass-production and sale. Its builders bill it as safe, well-designed and comfortable – a more useful variant of the frequently-seen projects for collapsible bicycles.

Apostrophe-Shaped Bridge Doubles as a Ride for Pedestrians

Scale Lane Pedestrian Bridge 1

Shaped like an apostrophe and bearing a shark-inspired fin, the Scale Lane Bridge in Hull, England allows pedestrians to go along for the ride when it swings open to allow ships passage. Made of black steel in a curving form, it resembles a ship when tucked up against the riverbank and viewed from afar.

The Scale Lane Bridge is believed to be the world’s first functioning bridge that enables pedestrians to stay on it while it opens and closes. Spanning the River Hull, the bridge cantilevers 35 meters (about 115 feet) to the east from its perch on the west bank.

The bridge provides a walkable route from a new public square and the Museums Quarter on the west bank to ‘The Deep,’ an aquarium that’s one of East Yorkshire’s biggest attractions. The spine of the bridge allows enough room for smaller boats to pass beneath it.

A viewing deck and seamless steel balustrade makes pedestrians feel like they’re on board a docked ocean liner, and offers a variety of seating areas. When the bridge opens, it activates a sequence of rhythmic bells combined with pulsing light to alert pedestrians to the imminent rotation and make the ride more exciting.

Brown to Green: Ashtray Doubles as an Urban Planner

Smoking is prohibited in plenty of public places these days, but for folks who just can’t quit, why not do something positive for the environment with the product of that habit? The Cindy ashtray also happens to be a planter – one that uses cigarette ash to fertilize plants.

Cindy was created by French design collective Mademoiselle Jean-Claude. The minimalist white planter looks and functions like a regular ashtray for all intents and purposes.

Cigarette butts are put out in the hole in the top of the planter. The design of the planter allows ash to fall through a pipe all the way down to the bottom of the planter, but not the butts themselves.

A small, barely noticeable drawer near the top of the planter allows caretakers to remove and dispose of the discarded cigarette butts.

In theory, the ashes nourish the plant and help it to purify the air in the smoking area. In practice, however, it isn’t clear whether this technique would actually work. It doesn’t seem possible that cigarette ash would contain many useful nutrients. As a conceptual product, the Cindy is a quirky and lovely way to beautify an urban setting.
