Nikon has announced that it will release new firmware for three of its DSLRs, improving their ability to communicate with the Atomos Shogun and Ninja-2 external video recording devices. Apple patent hints at ‘social camera flash’ using multiple iOS devices
A patent filed by Apple in 2011 and discovered this week by aoppleinsider.com seems to hint at a ‘social camera flash’ system, allowing multiple iOS devices to be connected and used as secondary strobes for impromptu flash setups. The patent is filed as an ‘illumination system’ and describes ‘initiating a master-slave relationship between the image capture device and at least one secondary device’. MIT builds advanced photo functions into hardware for mobile devices
A project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has embedded advanced processing functions into an image processor for mobile devices. The chip includes features such as ‘real-time’ HDR processing and sophisticated bilateral noise reduction at a hardware level – making the process more energy efficient than running it as software, and making the chip more appropriate for battery-limited mobile devices. The work was funded by iPhone manufacturer Foxconn and a prototype chip, fabricated by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, is now being tested.
