7 December, 2014 – The Olympus 40-150mm Lens

08 Dec

It’s a photographers market right now.  Tough decisions must be made as to what gear to purchase.  There is no question the mirrorless revolution is well under way.  We recently reviewed the new Samsung NX1 with some very impressive specs.  The Olympus OMD and Fuji systems have been growing very fast and let’s not forget Sony with the amazing a7 system.  Sony took another step forward this last week and announced the Sony a7 II with some amazing features.  We are now testing a version and we should have a report very soon. So, if you join the mirrorless movement which system do you go with?  They are all good and offer amazing performance. We’ll be visiting a number more of the mirrorless options over the next few weeks. Hopefully we can help you make the choice bestt for you.

So, continuing with our focus on the mirrorless systems we post Kevin Raber’s look at the new Olympus 40-150mm Pro zoom lens. This new lens is the second of four announced Pro Lenses by Olympus, that are on the road map to be shipped.  This lens is a good example of what smart engineering is all about and is quite a performer.  Read more HERE.

30 December, 2013 – Best New Camera of 2013

30 Dec

Yes, I know. Not another "Best of…". But, why not? I’ve used a dozen new cameras this year, and tested and reported on many of them on these pages. But inevitably there is one that keeps asking to go for a walk, to be taken on a trip, and to simply be used more than any other. This year’s hands-down winner is the Olympus OM-D E-M1.

27 December, 2013 – Field Review – Zeiss Touit 12mm lens

27 Dec

All of us at Luminous-Landscape hope you had a good holiday.  In less than a week we start a new year and you can count on new articles, reviews and videos as well as a new line up of workshops.

Legendary glass maker Zeiss has gotten a lot of attention in the last few years as they started to make lenses for the DSLR camera systems.  They didn’t miss a beat when it came to the APS-C sensor category either. Earlier this year they released two lenses with the family name of Touit. The two new lenses are a 12mm 2.8 and a 32mm 1.8 for the Fuji X system and the Sony NEX cameras.  Today’s article by István Nagy takes a closer look at the Zeiss Touit 12mm lens.  There are plenty of reviews of this lens out there but István takes a look at the lens in real world use. Read . . . Field Testing the Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens

If you are a Fuji X system user and you haven’t heard, there is now new firmware updates available for the X-Pro1 as well as most of the lenses.  This is a nice update and you should visit the Fuji Update page to learn more.  You’ll also be able to update your lenses.  Fuji also updated firmware on the original X100.  We have to give Fuji Kudos for keeping there cameras updated with the latest firmware features.

23 December, 2013 – Building a Better Profile – It’s All In the Receipe

23 Dec

A number of years ago I (Kevin Raber) was drivng through the Iceland countryside with Mark Dubovoy.  Our discission was on printing.  Mark was sharing how he makes profiles and how important it is to be precise.  No surprises there if you know Mark.  I told him I didn’t do any of that because I had been using ImagePrint Software for years and the profiles included with ImagePrint were so good I couldn’t come close in my experience making such a good profile,  Bottom line Mark tried Imageprint out and low and behold he switched.  He even reviewed Imageprint on this site.

Today we hear right from John Pannozzo who is the man behind ImagePrint with an article Building A Better Profile – It’s All in The Recipe

18 December, 2013 – The Full Frame Myth

18 Dec

Given the advances in sensor technology over the past few years, is Full Frame really necessary? Up until recently I might have said "Maybe not…". The latest generation of smaller sensor cameras have gotten so good, and the appeal of smaller and lighter bodies and lenses is so great, that in many parts of the world DSLR sales are being trumped by Compact System Cameras.

But now with Sony’s new A7 and A7r Full Frame cameras, which are actually smaller than some MFT models, which way are things going to go? Find out more.
