Lorrie – Grand Prize Winner

As with all bird photographers, I am really wanting a longer lens to “Get That Shot”. I am a regular reader of Digital Photography School. Today I was on your page looking for an article on aperture. I was hoping to understand aperture the best I can to make certain I am getting it correct for absolute sharpness. I was also wanting to understand how I should adjust aperture for the distance of subjects. I strive for sharp images with great focus. Suddenly I ran across this contest and I was like “Oh my Gosh!!” I have to enter!!

I love Tamron lenses. I am familiar with the Tamron web page. I visited today for the most up to date information on the Tamron 100-400mm Di VC USD. I am certain it will improve my photography in so many ways. I know it is far more than just a birding lens. I know Tamron lenses produces high-quality, sharp images with excellent color. I have extreme confidence in the lenses knowing I can take them out and use them in less than perfect weather conditions and they will not be frail. I have also watched several videos on YouTube by different reviewers stating the Tamron 100-400mm Di VC USD is a value and is far superior to any other lens in this category! The lens is certainly on my wishlist! Thank you!! Best Always!!

Esther – Second Prize Winner

The more I researched the three lenses, the harder it became to decide which one would be my top pick!

Thank you for doing this contest, it has helped me learn more about these lenses, and even if I don’t win any of the lenses I have been helped by this. I think that my top pick would be the Tamron SP 35mm f1.8. It is a very versatile lens that would be helpful for me in shooting portraits and getting clear shots of everyday life. I love that it is f/1.8, it will create stunning pictures with subjects that have that “pop.” It is also wide-angle which would be very nice to have! I am an 18-year-old amateur photographer and I look forward to using every piece of gear for capturing neat images of people and other wonderful things that God created.

Debra – Third Prize Winner

I live on 40 acres in southern California. On December 4th, everything burned in the Thomas Fire. I was able to get out with my camera bag but not my lens bag. I am living in a trailer on my property waiting to rebuild my house. At first, there was no life, not even a fly. The first life I saw was a stray hornet. Then the birds came back. Green is starting to sprout from the burned flora that I thought was dead and gone. I would have loved to record the return of wildlife but all I had in my camera bag was my Canon 5D Mark III, a nifty 50 and a kit lens. I feel like I am on a photo challenge.

I would love the Tamron SP 70-300mm Di VC USD to give me more range to document the changing details of my new landscape. The 70- 300mm range would be perfect for capturing returning insects, rabbits looking for fresh greens and the coyotes that hunt them. I am drawn to the ultrasonic silent drive to prevent startling my subjects and capture sharp images faster. Most of the wildlife ventures out at dusk so the vibration compensation would help with longer shutter speeds.

DJI reveals the winners of the 2017 SkyPixel aerial photography contest

“Above the polar bear” by Florian Ledoux — SkyPixel Photo Contest 2017 Grand Prize winner

Chinese drone-maker DJI and aerial photography website SkyPixel have announced the winners of the 2017 SkyPixel aerial photography contest, which was launched back in October. Winners span three categories—Landscape, Portrait, and Story—split between a “professional group” and “enthusiast group.”

The Grand Prize this year went to “Above the polar bear” captured with a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone by Arctic and wildlife photographer Florian Ledoux.

As the Grand Prize winner, Ledoux will receive an impressive collection of gear valued at more than $ 15,000 USD, including a DJI Inspire 2 with a Zenmuse X7 and lens, iPhone X 256GB, Nikon D850 DSLR camera body, and more. The contest also awards thousands of dollars’ worth of gear to other contest winners.

A total of 18 other winning images were announced, three per group in both the professional and enthusiast categories. SkyPixel also revealed nine nominated images and 10 “Popular Prize” images. Overall, more than 40,000 people from 141 countries entered images in the contest.

2018 Shoot & Share Photo Contest opens for entries on January 8th

Wanna pit your skills against tens of thousands of other photographers… for free? You’ll soon have your chance. The 2018 Photo Contest by Shoot & Share—which bills itself as the world’s only free & fair photo contest—will start accepting entries on January 8th.

What sets this particular contest apart is the voting process. No hoity-toity group of judges sifting through your entries, the whole system is democratic.

Every entrant is allowed to submit up to 50 photos in a total of 25 categories, and those photos are voted on by everyone else (including you). Photos are shown to you at random, and you vote for your favorites. As Shoot & Share explains it, “No one knows who took the photos, but everyone votes for the winners. The photos with the most votes win!”

The democratic draw of this contest as summed up best, perhaps, by DPReview Editorial Manager Wenmei Hill:

“It’s huge, it’s free, and it’s a big ego boost (or destroyer, depending on how good a photographer you are) for tons of photographers.”

Prizes for the 2018 contest haven’t been revealed yet, but all 25 categories will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, in addition to a Grand Prize Winner for the contest as a whole. According to the contest site, “Last year, there was over $ 1,200,000 in free memberships, software, credit, gifts, workshops, and more,” given away.

Not bad for a totally free and extremely democratic contest.

UPDATE: Several readers have expressed concern about some of Shoot & Share’s terms and conditions for this contest: specifically, the part that says you allow them to use your images with photo credit.

To clear up any misconceptions, we reached out to Heather Keys, the company’s head of Marketing and Business Development, to ask how contestants’ photos have been used in the past. Here’s what she said:

In the past, the photos from the contest have been used to promote various community activities as well as used to promote future contests (always with photo credit included).

At times, we have reached out to those photographers that submitted images during the contest to request to use certain submitted photos in promotion of some of the products we offer (PASS.us and Agree.com ). With that said, we’ve always requested permission and offered compensation if we ever used submitted photos for promotion of our software tools.

These are the winners of the UK’s Landscape Photographer of the Year contest

The winners of the 2017 “Take a View – Landscape Photographer of the Year” contest have been announced—a competition that aims to find the best images of the UK from photographers around the world. This year’s winner of the top prize and title was Benjamin Graham with a nicely uncomplicated view of the dunes at West Wittering in West Sussex.

The competition, which is in its 11th year, has a prize fund of £17,000. £10,000 goes to the Landscape Photographer of the Year, £1,000 to the winners of the four adult categories and the youth prize, and £500 to second placed images in the adult categories.

Landscape Photographer of the Year 2017

The Winner is Announced

A photograph of the UK’s stunning coastline wins the top prize for the third year running, as Benjamin Graham’s image of the dunes at West Wittering in West Sussex becomes the eleventh winner of the overall title: Landscape Photographer of the Year. The judges chose Benjamin’s image from thousands of entries celebrating the richly diverse landscape of the UK.

Winning the top prize of £10,000, Benjamin was attracted by the ambiguity of the scene:

“As well as its minimal simplicity, I particularly like the indeterminate scale of the image. The double S-curve could be two metres long or two thousand… It was actually about twenty.”

Charlie Waite, one of Britain’s leading landscape photographers and founder of the Awards spoke about the winning image:

“Benjamin’s image has a hypnotic and contemplative quality that acts as an antidote to turbulent times. When at the coast, we often just stand and gaze out to sea and seem to gain some kind of spiritual well-being from doing so. This image suggests the same emotional experience and the composition leads the eye on to infinite calm.”

From flower fields and land patterns to romantic castles and historic bridges, the winning photographs in the ‘Take a view – Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards’ not only display the talent of their creators but also inspire visitors to explore and discover the wonders of the British countryside.

The Young Landscape Photographer of the Year title has been awarded to Andrew Bulloch, whose image of an urban skatepark set against a backdrop of the Northern Lights shows a meeting of the man-made world with one of nature’s most fascinating phenomena.

For the third year, the Awards are being held in association with VisitBritain and the GREAT campaign to showcase the diversity of amazing moments and experiences that can be only be had on a trip across Britain. The VisitBritain ‘Home of Amazing Moments’ Award was offered for the photograph judged to best capture the spirit of the campaign. The winning image, by Graham Niven, of an early morning boat trip on Loch Garten in the Cairngorms is taken from a viewpoint that allows the viewer to feel involved and part of the ‘amazing moment.’

VisitBritain/VisitEngland Chief Executive, Sally Balcombe said:

“As Graham’s spectacular image shows, Britain’s diverse and stunning scenery offers a visual feast in which the viewer can imagine themselves at the centre of the experience. It is a fantastic example of how images stir our emotions and fire our imaginations, motivating and inspiring us to explore new locations and landscapes.”

Congratulations also go to the winners of this year’s other Special Awards. The Network Rail ‘Lines in the Landscape’ Award was won by Jon Martin for his view of a train crossing Barmouth Viaduct over the River Mawddach in North Wales (right) and ‘Poppies in a field of linseed’ by Julian Eales, won The Sunday Times Magazine Award. Will Milner wins the Adobe Prize for his photograph of Durdle Door at night, Mark Cornick receives the Fujifilm Print Prize for his architectural view of a London building and Rachael Talibart’s seascape at Birling Gap in East Sussex is awarded the LEE Filters Prize.

The exhibition of winning entries will again be held on the Balcony at Britain’s busiest station, London Waterloo, giving thousands of visitors the chance to see the very best of the British countryside in the very heart of the capital. Opening on Monday, November 20th, the exhibition is hosted by Network Rail and will run for twelve weeks, closing on February 4th, 2018, before heading off on a tour of selected stations countrywide. Admission is free.

I love the new PaintShop Pro 2018’s improved navigation and bigger icons. It allows me to better express my creativity with Editing the RAW image. The reason for submitting an IR image edited with PaintShop Pro 2018 is to show that PaintShop Pro 2018 can easily handle editing RAW IR images. Editing RAW IR images is a multistep process involving a red/blue color swap and precise color saturation and white balance settings. Using PaintShop Pro 2018 the editing process is very easy and the steps can be saved allowing for fast repeatable editing of several RAW images quickly. The picture I am submitting for the contest was taken on the first full day of Fall 2017 using a Canon T1i converted specifically to take IR images. This image was taken using a 665nm IR filter on the Canon T1i. The camera was positioned on the Doyle road covered bridge in Jefferson, OH and pointed at Mill Creek.

I’m new to digital photography post-processing, but I downloaded the free trial from Corel and used it to edit this photo that I took back in October 2011 in Acadia National Park in Maine. I watched many of the tutorials on the Corel site and they are a good way to feel ones way around the program and get a taste of the possibilities. The program is powerful yet does not seem overly complicated to learn. I definitely am excited to use Corel to take my photos to the next level. Thank You!

Zeiss offering €12,000 in lenses and €3,000 trip in annual photo contest

German optics manufacturer Zeiss has opened its annual photography competition for entries, and this year it will be offering lenses to the value of €12,000 for the best collection of images. The winning photographer will also get €3,000 to spend on travel for a photography-related project.

Now in its third year, the Zeiss Awards partner with the Sony World Photography Awards. Winners get to go to the ceremony in London, and will have their work exhibited alongside the SWPA winners in the finalists show.

The theme this year is ‘Seeing Beyond – Untold Stories’ and entrants are expected to submit between five and ten images that operate as a single series, along with a short description of the project.

The Brief:

Seeing Beyond – Untold Stories

Photographers are again asked to look beyond the ordinary and everyday to present judges with strong series of 5-10 images that capture an ‘untold story’. The brief is intended to be understood in its broadest sense – the work could explore a familiar theme told from a different perspective or address an issue that has previously had little attention. All forms of photography are welcome, but judges are specifically looking for series of works that have a strong narrative. The ‘untold story’ the photographer is addressing must be visually clear in the submitted image.

ZEISS Photography Award

Photographers from all over the world are invited to submit a photo series by 6 February 2018 in response to the topic “Seeing Beyond – Untold Stories”.

The third round of the ZEISS Photography Award is underway – and ambitious photographers from all over the world are invited to present their work on the topic of “Seeing Beyond – Untold Stories” to an international expert jury. The photographers have until 6 February 2018 to submit a series of five to ten images here.

“Untold Stories” can be understood in all manner of ways, but the end result should be stories that have not yet been told (in full). The works can bring to life familiar tales from a wholly new perspective – or be dedicated to topics that have received little attention to date.

A renowned jury

All submissions will be reviewed by a renowned jury comprising three international photography experts: British Art Director Chris Hudson from National Geographic Traveller, Publisher of Dutch photo magazine GUP Magazine Peter Bas Mensink, and Patricia Morvan from French photo agency Agence VU’ who is in charge of exhibitions and cultural projects. The submissions will be judged on both their quality and creativity. All forms of photography are welcome and judges are specifically looking for series of works that have a strong narrative.

Attractive prizes: ZEISS lenses to the value of €12,000 and a photo trip

The winner and shortlist will be announced on 3 April 2018. The winner can look forward to fantastic prizes: ZEISS camera lenses of their choosing to the value of €12,000 and €3,000 to put towards a photo trip. An award ceremony will take place on 19 April 2018 in London. The winning photos plus a selection of those shortlisted will be on display at Somerset House in London alongside the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition; the winner will attend the opening of the exhibition. ZEISS will also invite the winner to the company headquarters in Germany, where they will get a peek behind the scenes of the ZEISS world and the opportunity to get to know its lenses. They will also get the chance to work with ZEISS and the World Photography Organisation.

“Due to photo editors having seen my work through the news of winning the ZEISS Photography Award, my personal documentary work has since gone on to be printed in magazines and newspaper around the world,” says last year’s winner Kevin Faingnaert, who wowed the judges with his photos of life on the Faroe Islands. “Winning the award helped secure more clients but, more importantly, my self-confidence as a photographer has certainly grown since the win.”

The ZEISS Photography Award is hosted jointly by ZEISS and the World Photography Organisation. Last year, around 4,700 photographers from 132 countries submitted more than 31,000 photos.

The deadline to enter is October 9, 2017, Midnight PDT. Comments left after the deadline will not be considered.

By “best” – we’re looking for people who understand what NYIP is, what the course offers, and how it suits their needs. There’s no need to write essay length comments to win – but we’re looking to hear what you like about NYIP, the course and how it would help your development as a photographer.

DJI will let you rent a Mavic Pro for free so you can enter Nat Geo’s aerial photography contest

NatGeo and DJI have teamed up to offer Mavic Pro drone rentals to photographers who want to enter National Geographic’s #MyMavicContest, an aerial photography contest for photos taken with the Chinese company’s drone. Not everyone who signs up for the drone rental will be awarded one, but those who are chosen to receive the Mavic Pro will get to use the drone for two weeks.

National Geographic has detailed the rentals on its new contest page, explaining that anyone can sign up to get the Mavic Pro loaner device. For its part, DJI explains that it will randomly select people from the application pool for whom the drones will be provided; there are ‘hundreds’ of drones available, though an exact number wasn’t provided. Recipients will have to pick up the rental from their local DJI Store, as well.

When signing up for the rentals, applicants must provide information that includes name and email, photography interests, pickup city, and can optionally provide an Instagram ID and National Geographic Your Shot ID. The rental period is running from September 5 to October 31, though recipients will only get the drone for two weeks during that period.

Photographers who already own the Mavic Pro can enter their photos into the contest by posting them on Instagram with the hashtags #NatGeoTravel and #MyMavicContest. Five winners will be selected in November to received a Mavic Pro of their own.

The Kennel Club 2017 photo contest winners are cute as h*ck

The Kennel Club Dog Photographer of the Year

The Kennel Club has announced the 2017 winners of its annual ‘Dog Photographer of the Year’ photo contest. Now in its 12th year, the international competition received almost 10,000 entries from 74 countries around the world, and was sponsored by SmugMug and Nikon School. As the internet would say, that’s a lot of h*ckin’ good puppers.

We present the 1st place winners from each of the ten categories in the competition. To see all the winners in each category, head over to the Dog Photographer of the Year website.

Overall winner and ‘Man’s Best Friend’ category winner: Maria Davison Ramos (Portugal)

About the photo: For me, capturing real and candid moments is what photography is all about. This is one of those moments. My friend had just adopted Yzma and while we were chatting in the kitchen I was taking some photographs. The location and the light were far from perfect, but I ended taking one of the photos I’m most proud of.

About the dog(s): The dog’s name is Yzma and she’s a Golden Retriever cross. She was adopted by one of the photographer’s closest friends.

‘Assistance Dogs’ category winner: Alasdair Macleod (Ayrshire, Scotland)

About the photo: Megan was photographed during her weekly visit to South Beach Care home in Saltcoats, with one of the residents, 95 year old RAF veteran Mr Duncan Currie (a pilot for the Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron, Dam Busters) who has Dementia.

About the dog(s): Megan is a rescued Greyhound and was the top Therapet for 2016.

‘Dogs at Play’ category winner: Kalyee Greer (United States)

About the photo: Petey and I stood there together on the water’s edge in awe as the day bowed out to the night and the sun slipped its yellow head behind the horizon. Pastel colours painted themselves across the Summer sky above our shoulders in stripes of pink and cobalt blue as we quietly revelled in that perfect, endless moment. Then, just as suddenly as the sky had lit itself on fire, Petey clumsily jumped into the water with a joyful little sparkle in his eye, beckoning me to come along. I followed him in and giggled until my sides hurt as he would push his paw down into the warm, salty water, sending little crystal droplets flying through the air all around him. With each happy splash came the realization of the perfection in those tiny moments, and of the unmatched purity of the canine heart.

About the dog(s): The dog in the photo is named Petey. A cuddly and endlessly sweet Wheaten Terrier who belongs to a previous client of Kaylee’s.

‘Rescue Dog’ category winner: Alexandra Robins (Wiltshire, England)

About the photo: When I went to Bath Cats and Dogs home to photograph some of their animals, Chloe and Tess were the first on my list. We took them out to one of the large, grassy paddocks for them to have a run around. Both dogs flew across the field together, I managed to get some fun action shots of them playing. However, it was this image of Chloe looking up at her carer that has always been my favourite. Chloe was a little timid towards strangers; she was probably looking for reassurance with a strange photographer present!

About the dog(s): Chloe came to Bath Cats and Dogs home with her friends, Tess and Diego, when their owner died. Chloe the brindle greyhound was a timid dog and used to hide away from strangers but was gentle and caring to her friends. All three dogs found loving homes.

‘Dogs at Work’ category winner: Sarah Caldecott (Yorkshire, England)

About the photo: The photograph of Rita was taken during a training day in February this year on the moors in County Durham the weather hadn’t been kind and the light was fading fast.

About the dog(s): The dog in the photograph is a pointer called Rita owned by a friend who Sarah met during training sessions with her dog.

‘Puppy’ category winner: Mirjam Schreurs (Netherlands)

About the dog(s): Mirjam placed a call out on Facebook for dogs to photograph and the owner of Tyson the Boxer puppy responded to it. Mirjam photographed Tyson when he was 14 weeks.

‘I Love Dogs Because…’ category winner: Julian Gottfried (Chicago, US)

About the photo: I especially enjoy this photo because it exemplifies what I love about my dog. In the image you can easily see his cuteness, personality, and playful manner. Combined with the snow, they create a truly lively photo.

About the dog(s): Pippin, a terrier-mix. Julian’s family adopted him on Valentine’s Day in 2010. He and his brother had been wanting a dog for a really long time, and their parents finally decided to adopt one. Pippin had been found wandering around Missouri with his mother in a poor state, and was staying at a shelter. He was only seven pounds, but the most adorable dog there, and he has since become an integral part of the family.

‘Oldies’ category winner: John Liot (St. Helier, Jersey)

About the photo: This image was taken as part of a commissioned shoot with three rescue dogs. It was a beautiful and bright November day and the Sun was creating an intense light through the windows, warming the client’s house. Kelly, an apprehensive 12 year-old collie-cross, found her spot in the God rays heating up the arm of a sofa and had a nap. She was a cautious girl with a sad backstory and had challenging behavioural issues prior to being adopted. Happily though, she has found rejuvenated life with her new family in Jersey who are giving her all the love and attention she sorely missed in her younger years.

About the dog(s): Kelly is rescue and her breed is unknown. She was 12 when the photo was taken. She was adopted by Bex D., a worker at Jersey’s animal shelter, who has two other rescue dogs that she’s also adopted from the JSPCA.

‘Young Pup Photographer’ category winner: Dylan Jenkins (Swansea)

About the photo: I took this photo in my garden. We had some cake and Mosey came to sniff it. I took about twenty photos and this was the best and the funniest.

About the dog(s): Mosey is the older of our two hounds. She’ll be 10 in October. She has had some scent training (truffles!) and has appeared in a few dog shows but is happiest as a pet/companion dog She is incredibly gentle and sweet-natured and hilariously funny. Mosey and Dylan have an incredible bond.

‘Dog Portrait’ category winner: Anastasia Vetkovskaya (Russia)

About the photo: This magnificent Afghan was incredibly nice to shoot – he is very expressive and emotional.

SkyPixel and DJI now accepting entries to 2017 Aerial Video Contest

DJI and SkyPixel have opened up their latest competition for entries. The 2017 SkyPixel Video Contest accepts video clips from 30 seconds up to 5 minutes in length. Videos can be created by any aerial platform, so if you don’t own a DJI drone, fear not – you’re still in the running. Prize packages include DJI drones, Nikon DSLRs and some slick-looking (?) Oakley sunglasses.

Entries must be submitted to one of three categories: City, Nature and Sports. The deadline for submissions in August 2nd, 2017. Find out more at the contest website.
