Fujifilm has announced several new fixed lens compacts including the FinePix S9900W, S9800 and the rugged XP80. The S9900W and S9800 both offer 24-1200mm equivalent zoom lenses and 5-axis image stabilization (for video only), though only the S9900W offers built-in Wi-Fi. The XP80 dives deeper than its XP70 predecessor, improving on its 10m/33ft maximum depth up to 15m/50ft. Read more.

Nikon has announced new Coolpix compacts outside North America. The beginner-friendly models include the Coolpix S3700, Coolpix S2900, Coolpix L31 and Coolpix L32. The S3700 provides Wi-Fi and NFC, while the L32 and L31 use AA batteries. Read more

Lighting manufacturer Metz is to introduce a new miniature flash unit designed for use with small cameras, such as premium hotshoe-equipped compacts and compact system bodies. With a maximum guide number of 26m/85 ft at ISO 100, the Mecablitz 26 AF-1 is many times more powerful than the flash units that come bundled with, or built-in to, this sort of camera – and indeed many don’t come equipped with a flash at all. Canon has introduced five PowerShot models, ranging from budget to midrange. The SX610 HS has a 25-450mm equiv. lens, 20.2MP BSI-CMOS sensor, 3″ LCD, Wi-Fi with NFC, 1080/30p video. Stepping up to the SX710 HS adds a 25-750mm lens, DIGIC 6 processor (the only model with this), and 60p video. The SX530 HS pairs a 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor with a whopping 24-1200mm lens. On the budget end there’s the ELPH 170 that has a 20MP CCD, 25-300mm lens, and 720p video. A cheaper ELPH 160 has a 28-224mm lens and no image stabilization. More details

Ricoh has announced the WG-30W and WG-30, expanding its rugged compact camera lineup. The WG-30W provides Wi-Fi connectivity while the WG-30 doesn’t, but outside of that the two cameras are identical. Offering a 16MP BSI CMOS sensor, the WG-30W is waterproof to a depth of 40ft / 12m, shockproof to 5ft / 1.5m, crushproof to 220lbf/100kgf and coldproof down to +14F/-10C. Read more

Canon announces the PowerShot ELPH 150 IS, ELPH 140 IS and ELPH 135, replacing its A-series of budget-friendly compacts. Each model uses a CCD sensor, providing a top video resolution of 720p. The 20 megapixel PowerShot ELPH 150 IS offers a 10x optical zoom and Intelligent IS. The PowerShot ELPH 140 IS has a 16 megapixel sensor, Intelligent IS and an 8x zoom, and the ELPH 135 provides an 8x zoom and 16 megapixels without IS. All three cameras are offered with a sub-$ 200 MSRP – a significant step down in price for the ELPH series.

CES 2014: Three new FinePix cameras are unveiled today, each with an emphasis on providing long zoom ranges. The Fujifilm FinePix S9400W and FinePix S9200 superzooms offer a 50x optical zoom lens covering a 24-1200mm equivalent zoom range, both using a 16.2 megapixel CMOS sensor. The two cameras are identical, with the S9400W adding Wi-Fi functionality. The Fujifilm FinePix S8600 has a 36x optical zoom (25-900mm equivalent) and a 16 megapixel CCD sensor.

CES 2014: Samsung has used CES as an opportunity to refresh its compact line-up, launching the WB1100F superzoom, alongside the WB50F and WB35F CCD-based compacts. All three offer Wi-Fi with NFC, as well as 720p video. The WB35F and 50F are both based around 12x, 24-288mm equiv, F3.1-6.3 lenses, with the more expensive 50F offering a larger, higher-res rear screen. The WB1100F has a 35x, 25-875mm equiv zoom.

Nikon has unveiled its first DX-format compact, the Coolpix A, alongside the enthusiast-focused Coolpix P330. The Coolpix A fits a 16MP APS-C CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter behind a 28mm equivalent, F2.8 prime lens. The Coolpix P330, meanwhile, gains a 1/1.7″ sensor and Raw-shooting capability, over its predecessor. The Coolpix A will cost around $ 1100/£1000, while the P330 will retail for around $ 380/£350.

CP+ 2013: Casio wants to make cameras that allow non-photographers to take better images, and that could mean large sensor compacts, says Jin Nakayama, Senior General Manager of the company’s QV Digital Camera Division, but don’t expect a mirrorless camera. The company, which makes some of Japan’s best-selling compacts, has a development strategy Nakayama believes will distinguish it from smartphones while also staying a step ahead of its camera rivals, he says.
