This is a tutorial that (tries to) demonstrate the power of the Selective Colour dialogue in Photoshop. I mess up a little (accidentally leaving the dialogue on absolute instead of relative), but I think it works out anyway… I also do my best to explain how Curves actually works, (especially why an s-curve works to increase contrast).
