The ever-increasing video capability of digital SLRs has seen manufacturers such as Canon, Samyang and Zeiss make video-optimised versions of their conventional lenses, and now Kenko Tokina is getting in on the act. The Tokina 16-28mm T3.0 is a manual focus version of the AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 Pro FX wideangle zoom, with a redesigned barrel that features the usual refinements for video work, including geared focus, zoom and aperture rings, and scales designed to be read from the side of the camera. It’ll be made in Canon EF and Arri PL mounts, with a suggested retail price of ¥580,000 – almost 5 times that of lens it’s based on.

8 July, 2013 – Anticipating the Blackmagic Pocket Cine Camera

08 Jul

The revolution in the cinema / video segment of our industry continues. Blackmagic, a respected video equipment manufacturer out of Australia, is about the ship its Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

If you’re a meat-and-potatoes still photographer, why should you care? Well, maybe you shouldn’t. But if you’re a film / video creator of any stripe this is another major step toward the democratization of high quality production equipment at an amazingly low price.

And if you’re one of the major camera makers, well, it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee. Here’s a relatively small Ozy company trumping you all by producing a video camera that shoots raw video for under $ 1,000, including an active Micro Four Thirds mount and a touch screen. Be afraid!

The system is built around Joby’s popular Gorillapod Focus flexible tripod, and includes wheeled feet and the ‘CineSquid’ attachment allowing you to firmly mount a DSLR or small video camera to windows. We covered the Cine System last year in an article about interesting photography-related Kickstarter projects, and were really intrigued by its potential. Click through for a link to our review.
