25 Wonderful Christmas Light Painting Images

Light Harted (Reindeer Light Painting), Hertfordshire

Last week we shared a tutorial and image collection on taking beautiful Christmas Bokeh images which got shared around the web like crazy. As a followup we thought it might be fun to share a collection of a different type of Christmas image – those that include some aspect of Light Painting.

I am Santa Claus

Light Painting is a technique whereby you create spectacular images by moving different types of light through a scene while you take a longer exposure. The results can be quite striking – as you’ll see from the images in this post.

How to Take Beautiful Bokeh Christmas Images [With 39 Stunning Examples]

LOVE 10/50

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas… and in our forums I’ve noticed more and more great Christmas images being shared – some of which feature a technique that is always popular at this time of year – Bokeh Christmas lights shots.

Christmas tree lights II

The technique takes a bit of experimenting and practice but is relatively simple to do. You need some Christmas lights and a camera lens with a reasonably ‘fast’ aperture (or a large aperture).

#ds385 - Red Wool Socks

The key is to shoot at the larger end of your available aperture – this throws the background (and foreground) of your shot out of focus and any Christmas lights in the foreground or background will become little balls of light.

Dreaming about bokeh

As you’ll see in most of the images featured in this series – the technique is particularly good if you also have some element in your shot that is in focus. This ‘subject’ might be a person, a pet, a Christmas decoration or something else.

Gracie

You can make the little balls of light bigger by increasing the distance between your in focus subject and the out of focus lights in the background.

Holiday bokeh

While most of the images in this series have the Christmas lights in the background of the image (behind the subject) it is also possible to create the little bokeh balls of light by putting the lights in the foreground of your image (in front of your subject). You can see this in the image below. The impact is a little different as the bokeh balls will cover part of your subject.

335/365: ¿Que puedo hacer con estas luces que no se haya hecho ya?

Another popular technique is to create different shaped bokeh. You can make stars, hearts or even little snow flakes like the image below.

Joyeux Noël! Merry Christmas!

To get these different little bokeh shapes is pretty simple. You just need to make a little cutout ‘mask’ for your lens. Rather than go over how to do it here check out this video tutorial that will walk you through it here.

Love a Good Buzz - 347/365

The other way to change the shape of your bokeh balls is to experiment with different apertures. You’ll find that in most cases the larger your aperture the rounder the ball – but go for a slightly smaller aperture you may find your bokeh becomes more hexagonal (or Heptagonal or Octagonal… the number of sides will depend upon how many blades your lens has).

christmas kiss

The different ways of using this bokeh Christmas lights technique is only limited by your imagination. Here are some more examples to give you ideas. Enjoy!

For The Love Of Santa! 22 Crazy Christmas Decorations

30 Nov

[ By Marc in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

The holiday season is about friends, family, and feeling close to one’s fellow man. This is all well and good, but it’s also an excuse to go absolutely insane with decorations. After a couple of decades living in the same house, some people build up quite a collection of decorations, until it all gets awesomely out of control.

(Images via dontcallmebecky, manolaw, sweetfineday)

The top image showcases a truly wild light show that takes place annually at a private residence. Seeing just one corner of a yard is only a hint of what else they have up their sleeve, and you can see the rest here. The middle image is from the San Antonio River Walk, a festival that celebrates with an incredible array of beautiful lights, with a lot of the high class decorating that is not always present in these set ups. In New York, this glimpse at another private residence makes one wonder how much it costs to power all those lights each year. Click here to see more.

(Images via gridto, forwardeverforward, sketchysantas)

In Toronto, Canada, Benjamin Boake Trail leads to one of the most intense Christmas displays in the city. For sheer luminescence, it’s a difficult one to beat. The second house looks more like the Vegas strip than a place that someone actually lives, while the final image shows a tad bit more class.

(Images via mindlessmirth, villageorigin, christmaslightsetc, dontcallmebecky)

Most homeowners stop decorating once they literally don’t have an inch of their house left to color in lights… thankfully, not everyone does. Whether the house is plastered in lights like the top left example, or the lights leak out into the lawn like the house at bottom right, it’s amazing to see the effort some people put into their setup. Going a bit simplistic is better for some folks, as the top right and bottom left images attest.

(Images via fooyoh, timnealon, tampalights, welovedc)

If someone doesn’t own a house to decorate, or just wants to bring their zest for the holidays out on the road, there’s always the option to decorate a vehicle. This pickup truck takes the cake (and probably extra car batteries) for its intense setup that covers every square inch of its body. Not to be outdone, a blue sedan takes to the night with cool blue colors lighting up the street. A more humble Beetle sits stolidly as a piece of decoration, while a chopper makes waves with lights that make it appear like it’s simply an illustration and not an actual street vehicle.

(Images via gawker, coolfwdmail, 1funny, stickyboydaily)

When it comes to decorating, more is better, right? Some people definitely think so! This top house seems to have entire scenes going on, while the inside of this person’s house in the United Kingdom is filled to the gills, with an annual display they had to shut down after the power bill became too much to handle. The bottom house looks like it’s being weighed down by the incredible number of inflatable decorations they have in place. While the final home has a good mix between luminescent decorations and good old inflatables.

(Images via rofltime, californiathroughmylens, coolfwdmail, walyou)

Intense decorations can look classy, as these homes show. Using only white lights make this house stand out, and the snow around it only serves to help the image. Giant nutcrackers stand in front of the Mission Inn during their festival of lights in Riverside California, and they do just fine without any snow to help. The bottom house wins the award for sheer number of lights, yet they manage to keep it orderly enough to not look too garish. Last but not least, a large house stands adorned in classic decorations, with a faux tree made out of strings of light to decorate the yard.

Season’s Graffitis! 16 Santalicious Christmas Murals

23 Nov

[ By Marc in Art & Street Art & Graffiti. ]

Despite the fact that Thanksgiving just concluded, everyone’s eyes are already looking forward to the Christmas season. These fantastic holiday murals are a tease as the holiday rapidly approaches.

(Images via designalmic, crashwilliams)

Renowned 3D chalk artist Julian Beever is no stranger to holiday themes. This particular work is a glimpse into Santa’s workshop, hidden in the North Pole. A gun-toting Santa is an interesting street art twist on the jolly gentleman.

(Images via artofsamevans, grafitiigallery, creativespark)

“Siberian Santa” is an art mural in Melbourne, Australia with an interesting Tim Burton-esque style to it. The muted colors differentiate it strongly from most Christmas-themed art, which seems to prize garishness as a defining motif. Few characters can light up a dark street corner like old St. Nick, spray painted here in a popular graffiti corner. For people who like to play devil’s advocate, the mural featuring the Grinch is a fun response to the typical messages of holiday cheer.

(Images via cultureclimax, heelsandwheelsonline, creativespark, democrashield)

Christmas isn’t all fun and games to these graffiti artists. In the top image, a tree defends itself against an ax-wielding assailant and does some morbid decorating of its own. A mural depicting a gangster Santa sits astride a warm beach in Australia. In Singapore, artist Slacsatu shows a badass Santa with fists of fury and enough muscle to take on the Hulk. Lastly, a flowing christmas tree adorns a lonely street corner.

(Images via cultureclimax, graffitilife, graffiti-walls)

In this top image, Santa’s sleigh is envisioned as an endless chain, like a train pulling the world’s gifts through the sky. A take on the classic Coca-Cola ads adorns the side of a building, created by Graffiti Life, a graffiti service that does custom work in the UK. Lastly, a train car is dressed up like a giant gift, traveling miles on the tracks to end up under one lucky kid’s tree.

(Images via whereverdesign, panoramio, canalstreet, graffiti-walls)

Holiday cheer can be drawn from any source, even the dust (or frost?) on the windshield of a car. On the back of one building in Australia, Santa stands next to a kangaroo, clearly lost during his trip around the world. Artist Choq came up with this festive and crazy ode to Christmas, tagging, and chaos. Last but not least, Santa raises a cup and wishes everyone a happy holiday season!

A soldiers Christmas Lights

22 Nov

I’m an Army Soldier deployed to Iraq that had a little extra time on my hands. I created this christmas video using glowsticks and flashlights. My camera was a Nikon D300 using a 30sec exposer @ ISO 200 & F11. It is hard to get Christmas lights out here in the desert that work on 220volts so I made my own kind of holiday lighting outside of my CHU / housing unit. The rest of the pictures were pulled from DVIDS from last years Christmas in Iraq. I felt that America needed some Christmas cheer, and a brief reality check, that their are still troops overseas fighting for their freedom.

ABS-CBN Christmas Station ID 2012 “Lumiliwanag ang Mundo sa Kwento ng Pasko”

03 Nov

CLICK THE CAPTION BUTTON FOR ENGLISH & TAGALOG SUBTITLES Every year, the Kapamilya Network marks the start of the yuletide season with the launch of the ABS-CBN Christmas station ID. It has become almost a yearly tradition that Filipinos around the globe look forward to. Lumiliwanag ang Mundo sa Kwento ng Pasko, our Christmas Station ID theme, highlights how the Filipino spirit always shines through despite calamities that ravage our country. It shows how each one of us become bearers of light, as we help our countrymen get back on their feet… how we remain resilient because kindness never runs out, because help always comes. Many scenes in the SID are inspired by real events. Some of these stories happened at the height of the habagat – A fireman saved the lives of those stranded in their own homes; a chef opened the doors of his restaurant to feed victims; a young woman offered her own jacket to a street child who was suffering under the cold rain; Philippine coast guards went out of their way to save lives; Volunteers and civilians selflessly offered their time and energy to relief work. This year’s offering features hundreds of Kapamilya stars paying tribute to ordinary Filipino heroes, at the same time helping spread the light across the globe. The parol, a Pinoy Christmas icon, is this year’s Christmas SID centerpiece. Film director John-D Lazatin suggested the idea of having kids orphaned during Typhoon Sendong design a parol. This, in turn, is used as an

You are viewing actual film in this video, with all it’s wonderful imperfections, however, I highly recommend getting the DVD boxed set called “Max Fleischer’s Color Classics: Somewhere in Dreamland” ? amzn.to The short begins in an orphanage, where the orphans are all asleep, awaiting Christmas morning. Just then, the puppy from the clock slides down a ramp and licks on one of the orphans. The first orphan shouts, “Merry Christmas, everybody!” And all the orphans jump out of bed and head to the hall, singing the title song. They grab the toys from their stockings, and get ready to play with them. However, they are sad to discover that the toys are completely broken and fall apart when they are played with. The orphans can’t help but cry. Meanwhile, Professor Grampy is out riding through the snow in his motor-driven sleigh, singing the title song himself. He hears the orphans crying from inside the orphanage, and he parks the sleigh, runs to the door, peeps through the window, and tries to think of a way to give the orphans a better Christmas. He puts on his thinking cap, and shortly, the lightbulb on the cap blinks. Apparently, he has an idea. He climbs through the window and starts making new toys out of household appliances. Finally, he dresses up as Santa
