Yellow: Weekly Photography Challenge

After our post yesterday on using colour boldly we thought it might be time for a ‘colour’ related challenge this week. The colour we’re nominating for you to feature in your shot is – YELLOW.

Your challenge is to take some great photos that feature yellow. Lemons, rubber ducks, cheese, sunsets flowers…. I’m sure you get the picture!

Once you’ve taken your Yellow photos upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

50mm Focal Length: Weekly Photography Challenge

7We’ve written many times about why we like 50mm lenses here on dPS (for example here, here and here) and every time we do we get a heap of readers telling us that they love them too.

So this week your photographic challenge is to take and share an image taken with a 50mmm lens (or if you don’t have one – taken at around the 50mm mark on your zoom lens).

Feel free to take any kind of photo – just make sure you’re shooting at 50mm!

Low Light: Weekly Photography Challenge

1To followup on our post earlier today on Low Light Photography we thought it might be a good topic for this weeks challenge.

So – your challenge is to take and share a photo taken in low light.

You’re welcome to take any approach to this that you like. You might want to try shooting some star trails (also check out this post on star trails) or night skies, do some candle light photography, do a night time streetscape or shoot some light trails – really it is totally up to you.

Once you’ve taken your Low Light photo upload it to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

Family: Weekly Photography Challenge

This week we’ve published a couple of posts that relate to the topic of Family so thought it might be a good theme for our weekly challenge.

We’d love you to set aside some time this week to photograph a family member (or a close friend if you’re unable to be with family this week).

You’re welcome to photograph one of them or a group – either in a posed setting, candidly, in an environmental portrait or in any way that suits you (and them).

Converging Lines: Weekly Photography Challenge

This week we published a tutorial on using converging lines in the composition of your photos so today we thought it might make a good theme for our weekly challenge.

So – your challenge is to grab your camera and head out to find some converging lines to shoot – and then to share those photos with us.

You can see some examples of converging lines in shots in the post from earlier in the week but as you get out and about you’re sure to see them all around you – once you start looking you’ll be amazed how many they are.

Critique Yourself: Weekly Photography Challenge

This week we published a post by Lynsey Peterson in which she shared 5 of her own images that she feels could have been better.

It was a brave move by Lynsey to share that post and got me thinking about the topic of self critique.

My own experience of photography is that going through the process of critiquing your own work to see how you might improve is actually a very valuable process and as a result I’d like to encourage others to do the same as this weeks photography challenge.

Your challenge is to share a photo that you’ve taken recently and share with us how you’d improve it if you could shoot it again.

Would you change the composition, use different gear, pose your subject differently, shoot at a different time of day, use a different approach to lighting…. or something else?

There’s no need to write a long essay critique (although feel free). Just a few points on what you’d do to improve your shot next time is fine.

Once you’ve worked out which shot you want to critique upload it to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

Spirit: Weekly Photography Challenge

SpiritYesterday we published a post from Hailey Bartholomew with Tips for Taking Portraits that Reflect the Character and Spirit of Your Subject that gave me the theme of this weeks challenge.

Your challenge is to take and share an image on the theme of ‘Spirit’.

Feel free to approach the theme in any way that you wish – you might want to take a portrait that shows someones true spirit or you could photograph something that is ‘Spiritual’ or even photograph something that represents your spirit.

Be as creative as you’d like!

Curves: Weekly Photography Challenge

This week – as a follow up to our article Composing with Curves – your challenge is to take and share an image on the theme of ‘Curves’.

Read Composing with Curves, choose one of the types of curves mentioned (‘C Curves’, ‘Arches’, ‘S Curves’, ‘Circles’ or ‘Implied Curves’) and go out and try to capture some of them.

Headshots: Weekly Photography Challenge

ZoeThis week your photographic challenge is to take and share a ‘headshot’ portrait.

You’re welcome to photograph a friend, family member (adult or child), a stranger or even yourself – but we’re looking for something framed around head and shoulders but not much more than that.

There’s no wrong or right way to take a headshot and we’ll suggest some tutorials and resources to check out below – the key is getting your camera out and experimenting!

Transport: Weekly Photography Challenge

This week your photographic challenge is to shoot and share a photo or two on the theme of transport.

Feel free you take any approach you like – you can photograph a car, bus, plane, bike, horse and cart, skateboard, train, hand glider…. if you travel with it you can photograph it.

Feel free also to shoot it from inside the transport, outside the transport, with it moving or at a stand still… it’s totally up to you!
