We’ve had ‘transport’ but I thought maybe this week we’ll look at cars specifically!

We have SO many tips for photographing cars, and I’ve gathered a search for you (Click Here) and I also want to share a link to a friend of mine’s website, Larry Chen, he’s a Canon Explorer of Light and an amazing car photographer (Click Here) for some inspiration.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Texture

27 Feb

The post Weekly Photo Challenge – Texture appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

Texture is one of the seven elements of art. Rough vs smooth, patterns, contrast. We have many ways to show texture and this week we want to see how you interpret and show texture in a photograph. I’ve gathered a few examples of what ‘texture’ is, to me, and I guess we can interpret it in our own way and it might be different for you – but anyway! here are a few examples…

This Week Your Challenge Theme is #dPSTexture

Weekly Photo Challenge – Texture

There are some great examples and articles on #dPSTexture on the blog, too! Make sure you pop across and take some extra inspiration from them!

  • How to use texture to create compelling images.
  • 17 highly detailed images that show texture.
  • Tips for abstract macro photography using texture and light.

You can upload your photo here (comments down below) or over in our Facebook Group.

Share them on Instagram or Twitter and use the hashtag #dPSTexture so we can see them!

Weekly Photo Challenge – Old

20 Feb

The post Weekly Photo Challenge – Old appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

The theme this week was going to be ‘Cold’ but then I thought of all the people in snow&ice I’ve seen online this week and thought no, they’re likely quite done with ‘cold’ and then I realised I’d missed the C and thought I’d stick with ‘Old’ An old scene, an old object like some of my tools, below, or an old person’s portrait even? (And if any of you young people find and post a photo of me, there’s gonna be trouble haha!)

This Week Your Challenge Theme is #dPSOld

Weekly Photo Challenge – Old

With the theme #dPSOld some things you can think about when you’re taking your photos are:

  1. Detail – showing details, lines, cracks, wear.
  2. Story – work at telling a story with your image.
  3. Nothing old? Consider working on your image in post and going for ‘vintage’ look? (Here are some examples)

Don’t forget, you can go back and try ALL of our CHALLENGES over HERE!

Old tools or old cars, they have to be two of my favourite ‘old’ things to photograph! What can you find in your neighbourhood or in your house that you can photograph for this week’s challenge!

Weekly Photo Challenge – Flowers

06 Feb

The post Weekly Photo Challenge – Flowers appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

BEFORE you all rush to your archives to share that photo you’re thinking of, the ‘challenge’ part of our weekly challenges is that you get out and make a new photo for each challenge, and while we know that can be difficult, we would love to see you challenge yourselves and make a new, better than you’ve EVER done, image for the weekly challenges, rather than just grabbing one from the archives – if you can!

Need Inspo? Click Here or Here or Here

This week our theme is ‘Flowers‘ and while it has been done before, we want to see it done again, better than ever! From your garden, someone else’s garden, in the street, in the hills… What can you do with a simple flower? Work on your depth-of-field, eliminating distraction, or maybe make it part of a bigger scene, hidden beauty kind-of-thing.

Make sure you use the hashtag #dPSFlowers if you post your challenge entry on social media!

Weekly Photo Challenge – Trees

30 Jan

The post Weekly Photo Challenge – Trees appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

Where would we be without them! I left the weekly challenge topic to my 11yo today, his first choice was “Piranhas” I’m thankful he got the idea from my facial expression that his first topic choice wouldn’t fly… ‘Trees’ he said, thoughtfully.

Tag your photograph #dPSTrees if you share it on social media.

Black and White Photo of a Tree

Still trees, silhouetted trees, reflected trees, trees with lots of movement and a slow shutter… As ever, your options are endless and this is where your creativity must rear up and show itself! A tree is an easy thing to photograph, there it is, sitting there keeping you alive, click, job done right? No no no… take some time and show us something we haven’t seen before, detail, angles, the life of a tree.

Missed a challenge? Catch up here!

Tree Photograph

The two trees above couldn’t be any more different, the first one on Coombe Hill, in London, this one just above in Tilba Tilba, Australia, an old Oak and an old Gum… Moody was what I was going for there! Below’s tree, in London again, for a spot of reflection. Well, don’t just stand there, make like a tree and leaf…. (yes, I know, that was terrible)

Weekly Photo Challenge – Water

16 Jan

The post Weekly Photo Challenge – Water appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

There are so many ways to photograph ‘water’ be it running, still, lakes, oceans, rivers… The list is likely to be endless and all-encompassing. #dPSWater

Tag your photograph #dPSWater if you share it on social media.

Simon Pollock Point Lonsdale Photography

Slowing your shutter down and capturing the life in water, above with 1/10th of a second – unexpected and out on a shelf of rock with no filters, I had to stop my lens wayyyy down (f22) to get the slow shutter speed – just remember though, really high F numbers show you just how dirty your sensor is! (Clean it!)

Don’t know how to slow that shutter down? Click Here, try it, them come post your water photograph for this week’s challenge! Details on how to submit at the base of this post.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Serenity

11 Jan

The post Weekly Photo Challenge – Serenity appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

Welcome to the first weekly photo challenge for 2021! We’re starting out fairly calmly with the theme of ‘Serenity’ How will you convey ‘Serenity’ through a photograph?

Tag your photograph #dPSSerenity if you share it on social media.

Naturally, i’m thinking of Bonnie Doon which likely will mean nothing to anyone outside of Australia, but I guess serenity can be many things to many people, to me it’s generally sharing something ‘peaceful’ through a photograph, here are a couple of examples (and yes, we encourage great drone photography too)

Weekly Photo Challenge – Serenity
Weekly Photo Challenge – Serenity

The serenity in a scene, a single leaf on a tree, a still lake, a calm person, an empty beach at sunrise… SO many options for you to consider and then photograph. Make it your goal to go out and make a new photograph, make it a challenge.

Tag your photograph #dPSSerenity if you share it on social media.
