This week’s photography challenge topic is RESOLUTIONS!

A new year is upon us (it’s hard to believe, I know). And it is that time where we make resolutions for the year ahead.

Your resolutions might include making a special trip to do some landscape photography, or to capture some of the world’s landmarks. It may be to do more bird photography, macro photography, a 365-project or just more photography in general. You may decide this is the year to take the leap into doing photography full time. Alternatively, it could be that you want to slow down and take more notice of the things going on around you close to home.

Whatever they are, we’d like to see them represented in photography.

It could simply be a photo of a written list of resolutions, it could be photos of places you have been and want to return to this year. It could be photos of your family if you plan to spend more time with them this year. You get the picture.

It’s almost Christmas! OMG! Where did the year go?

Thanks to everyone who has taken part in the challenges this year – it’s been great fun, and often inspiring to see all your images. And I hope you continue to take part in this coming new year too.

So, for the last weekly photography challenge of 2019, with the theme of Christmas, you can take photos of anything that has a Christmas feel – portraits by the Christmas tree, with Santa, kids opening presents, or the family enjoying a Christmas feast.

Alternatively, you might like to capture the Christmas lights on the tree, or ones around your city or town. Capture a still life of Christmas items, decorations, do some food photography or just capture the overall vibe of Christmas.

Forests are a spectacular place to visit. Filled with trees, nature and wildlife, they ground us and make us feel good.

Throughout the seasons and in different countries around the world, they can be filled with snow or fallen leaves. They can have tree-lined rows of tall trees, or ferns on the forest floors. You might find moss, mushrooms or native flowers. Or look for the birds and wildlife.

They can be light and bright, or dark and moody. Use color or black and white.

I’m currently road-tripping and have been seeing plenty of Roads on my journey. I love the open road – it always feels like an adventure awaits. So that is why this week’s challenge is roads!

You can capture roads in cities or countries. The roads can be bitumen, paved, cobble-stoned or dirt. They can be the main focus of your composition or a minor part of another story.

They can be color, or black and white. They can use leading lines, patterns, light trails – the choice is yours.

So, have fun, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

You can practice your street photography skills, and capture shots like this. Photo: Don Fontijn

Go out and capture pictures of books, people reading on trains, planes, buses, in cafes etc.

Take photos of bookshelves, piles of books, newspapers or people reading on their mobile photos. There are so many options!

Do them as street photography, portraits, and still life. Do them color, or black and white. Use bokeh backgrounds or keep everything in focus! The decision is yours.

Street markets happen day and night and are filled with bustling crowds, fresh produce, and hand-made arts and crafts.

You can do detail shots of items for sale, or capture portraits in the crowd. Alternatively, try using long exposures to blur the crowd and really capture the hive of activity. Snap vendors interacting with customers, or the colors of the gazebos or fresh fruit and vegetables.

Play with black and white or work with contrasting light and shadows.

This week’s photography challenge topic is BLACK AND WHITE!

Inspired by our Black and White Photography e-book sale, I decided to make this weekly photography challenge Black and White. Black and white offers so much depth and emotion and has a timeless nature to it.

So go out and capture anything in black and white. You can use Monochrome Mode on your camera, or turn them into black and white with your favorite post-processing application.

They can be street photography, landscapes, architecture, patterns and textures, automotive, or use creative techniques such as slow shutter speeds, night photography, or intentional camera movement. Whatever you decide to photograph, just be sure they are black and white!

Seeing as though it is the week of Halloween, I decided to make that the weekly photography challenge this week. If there is no Halloween celebrations where you live, then just take some spooky photos and share with us!

So go out and shoot those spooky things that pop up for Halloween! Decorations, black cats, pumpkins, witches, creepy houses, trick or treaters, or anything that is spooky and resembles Halloween. Alternatively, shoot images of people setting up for Halloween.
