1/4 World Trade Center: Tulsa’s Half-Sized, Untwinned Tower

The BOK Tower in Tulsa, Oklahoma, looks uncannily like the vanished Twin Towers of the New York City skyline and this is neither accidental nor coincidental. This skyscraper was constructed just a few years after its distant cousins in NYC, was designed by the same architect as the World Trade Center buildings, and explicitly intended to be a replica.

Indeed, it looks nearly identical, from its sleek vertical facade slits right down to its bi-level lobby, marble walls, hanging textiles and other interior design elements. It is a close copy in nearly every significant way, except … it is just half the size.

It all started with CEO John Williams, who was so impressed by the Twin Towers in New York that he hired the same architect, Minoru Yamasaki, to build four quarter-scale replicas of the towers in Tulsa. This quatruple-tower schemed faced a cost issue: four sets of elevators for four quarter-sized structures.

As the story goes, Williams then took the architectural model, grabbed one of the towers, put it on top of another, and decided to go with one half-height copy instead. The result is in essence a one-quarter copy: the building is half the height of one twinned tower, or a fourth of the combined height (image below by Caleb Long).

Initially called One Williams Center, the single quarter-footprint, half-as-high replica stands 667 feet tall and was the tallest building not just in Tulsa but in all of the Plains States when it was built. It was completed in 1976, just three years after the World Trade Center towers in New York.

One might be left wondering, however: why does the tower not get more recognition as a close relation of two iconic, beloved and now-fallen buildings in the Big Apple? For one thing, it is a rather minimalist Modernist skyscraper, much like many others found in cities around the United States (and the world) from the mid-Century period.

Perhaps most importantly, though, it lacks the most defining characteristic of its cousins, an essential quality, as noted by French philosopher Baudrillard, of ‘double-ness’ that truly defined the Twin Towers. In many ways, that characteristic of ‘being twinned’ is what made them internationally iconic, standing out against more decorative (but singular) structures in the skyline.

Today, One World Trade Center stands as a symbol of unity, looking almost like two intersected towers rotated around a central axis then fused. This single structure manages, in a way, to capture the twinned aspect of the former towers, now memorialized on the pavement below.

Nothing to Hide: Open Glass Islamic Culture Center for NYC

Designed to dispel fears surrounding Muslim culture, practices and traditions, a new wide-open skyscraper design for New York City invites people of all faiths to enter, through both programmatic functions and a clear facade.

The schematic proposal by local firm Buro Koray Duman was commissioned by the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA), aiming to promote progressive change and social justice. The Society hopes to show another side of Islam to the city and the world.

The idea is, in part, to highlight cultural aspects of Islam as apart from the strictly religious (and particularly: radicalized) associations, distinguishing between peoples and religions.

The building is structured to be as welcoming and open as possible, consisting of horizontal floors stacked to fit a vertical urban landscape.

From Dezeen: “His studio’s schematic design for the centre features a 100,000-square-foot (9,290 square metres) building that takes its cue from historic Islamic cultural complexes, called kulliyes.”

“In these complexes, which are laid out horizontally, low-slung buildings with varying functions are organised around a centrally placed mosque.”

A central volume contains an auditorium, library, prayer room, restaurant and offices, connected by walkways that span public and private spaces around the perimeter.

This design may or may not be realized; the idea of building Islam-centered architecture near the site of the 9/11 attacks has been contentious for well over a decade.

Supporters hope, however, that structure (conceptual or actual) can show another dimension to even the wariest members of the public, at least opening the door to interfaith and intercultural dialogue.

Two World Trade Center: BIG Redesign Deconstructs Skyscraper

A long-standing design proposal from Foster + Partners has been scrapped by developers in favor of a new scheme from BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) that presents a different face to viewers depending on their approach or view within the city, rejecting conventional skyscraper typology and cultivating visual transitions between neighborhoods on all sides.

As the last project slated to be built on the World Trade Center site, the would-be 2 WTC skyscraper is a critical piece of the Lower Manhattan landscape, but its future tenants wanted something that stood apart from the more straightforward tall buildings associated with finance and Wall Street.

The prior scheme, shown above, featured four connected verticals, each terminating in an angled plane at the top, essentially a tower with slots centrally located along each face. The new scheme, endorsed by occupants including 21st Century Fox and News Corp and shown below, intentionally shies away from the skyscraper aesthetic and creates space for greenery on a series of platforms created by recessed sections of structure.

Its facade shows off a slim and modest structure when viewed from the memorial site on one side below but creates a stacked-box effect when seen from adjacent lower-rise parts of the city above like Tribeca: “From Tribeca, it will appear like a vertical village of singular buildings each tailored to their individual activities stacked on top of each other, forming parks and plazas in the sky.”

By keeping larger boxes at the base and similar overall square footage (nearly 3,000,000 square feet), the building also is designed to accommodate sizable studio spaces for the aforementioned media companies. Lower levels will be occupied by these giants while upper floors will be rented out to smaller commercial clients. Set alongside One, Three and Four World Trade Center, this structure will stand apart, its broken-down scale visually bridging the gap between the southern tip of the island and the rest of the city to the north.

Pure Gold: 24-Karat Art Center Highlights ‘Haunted House’

Part of a century-old distillery, a structure known as the ‘Haunted House’ now glimmers in the faintest of light thanks to its real 24 karat gold coating. Dutch architecture firm OMA adapted a complex of seven buildings in Milan for Fondazione Prada’s new arts center and added three new buildings, blending them all together with the goal of making it hard to tell which are historic and which aren’t.

The coat of gold paint makes the old factory building look like it could be as new as the glazed Podium building that was constructed around it, which will host temporary exhibitions. This striking detail was actually a last-minute decision, as lead architect Rem Koolhaas sought a way to “give value to a seemingly mundane and simple element.”

When the sun is shining bright, gold-tinted light reflects off that structure onto the rest of the complex, which also includes a cinema camouflaged by mirrors. OMA upgraded the historic structures with modern finish materials and carried an industrial aesthetic throughout the new buildings for a cohesive result. It’s not clear exactly how this could be possible, but according to Koolhaas, “gold is actually a cheap cladding material compared to traditional claddings like marble and even paint.”

Established by the Italian fashion house, Fondazione Prada aims to provide exhibition space for more diverse art than you’d normally see in a modern museum. The new complex, which is still under construction, will be its first permanent exhibition space.

Journey to the center of the Earth with Robbie Shone

British adventure and cave photographer Robbie Shone travels into the earth to get stunning images of the world beneath our feet. He’s been suspended 200m above the floor of the world’s deepest natural shaft, explored the far ends of a 189 km long cave system and spent nearly four days underground on one shoot. His images take us to places few of us will go and he doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. See gallery

Cultural Center Carved Out of 42 Grain Silos in South Africa

An amazing hybrid of preservation and transformation, this project involves carving a series stunning spaces inside a huge series of concrete silos set alongside the waterfront of Cape Town. Once the tallest structure in the city, but abandoned since 1990, this converted complex will provide a home for 80 art galleries and create a hub for cultural activity.

The spatial solution proposed by Thomas Heatherwick Studio involves scooping out huge voids within the existing industrial heritage site. This approach in turn exposes visitors to the tubular interiors of the silos via a newly-formed atrium while conserving much of the original building exterior. Meanwhile, below the surface, a series of re-purposed underground tunnels and storage spaces will provide additional access to the architectural history of the complex.

The non-profit endeavor will exhibit contemporary African art via indoor galleries as well as a rooftop sculpture garden, bookstore, restaurant, bar and more. THS will be working on the Zeitz MoCAA (founded with the collection of entrepreneur Jochen Zeitz) with a series of local partners including Ven Der Merwe Miszewski (VDMMA), Rick Brown Associates (RBA) and Jacobs Parker.

In an interview with DesignBoom, he architect sough to ask and answer the critical quesiton: “How do you turn forty-two vertical concrete tubes into a place to experience contemporary culture? Our thoughts wrestled with the extraordinary physical facts of the building. There is no large open space within the densely packed tubes and it is not possible to experience these volumes from inside. Rather than strip out the evidence of the building’s industrial heritage, we wanted to find a way to enjoy and celebrate it. We could either fight a building made of concrete tubes or enjoy its tube-iness.”

Of the project, David Green (CEO of the V&A Waterfront) said: “thomas heatherwick understood how to interpret the industrial narrative of the building, and this was the major breakthrough. His design respects the heritage of the building while bringing iconic design and purpose to the building.”

Regarding the search for a perfect site, Jochen Zeitz explains that “for five years we investigated suitable sites across Africa. The V&A waterfront provided an iconic heritage building, situated in one of the most visited and iconic sites in [the country].” Meanwhile, all of the existing silos will be capped with glass to let in light and show off their shape from above.

Flowing Forms: Curved New Cultural Center by Zaha Hadid

Architect Zaha Hadid’s designs are graceful and sinuous, imbued with dance-like movement, and the new Heydar Aliyev Center in Azerbaijan is no exception. This landmark structure, which will host the former soviet nation’s cultural programs, swoops over itself in glossy white ribbons, looking as if it were stretched and pulled into place by human  hands.

This malleability and the organic forms that inspired it forms a stark contrast to the traditional, historical Soviet architecture of the city of Baku. While not so well-known in the United States, this city stands at the forefront of architectural innovation as the Azerbaijan government spends an estimated $ 6 billion per year on new buildings. Other notable works of modern architecture in the city include the Flame Towers.

Hadid’s design is a modern interpretation of Islamic architecture as a composition of rows, grids, or sequences of columns that collectively form a non-hierarchal space. An architectural skin flows from the plaza up onto the roof of the first floor, and then rises several stories to form a shell-like canopy.

The clean, curving lines of the roof structure are already inviting passersby to ascend the roof, and it’s probably only a matter of time before skateboarders turn it into one big exhilarating playground.

Center of Infinity: 360-Degree House Defies Dimensionality

Forget floors, get over familiar geometries and start really thinking in three dimensions if you want to understand this futuristic and multifaceted home concept. Levels are secondary – the focus is movement, interior experience and exterior interaction.

Didier Faustino (images via By Encore) took to the Solo Houses challenge with an outside-in approach, but avoided the typical mistakes of many Postmodern shape-oriented architects who aim for appearance over function.

Dubbed In the Center of the Infinite, the jagged form frames a residential experience of open space, light and views, with occupiable levels filling in around human needs.

Outside, the object spikes out in all directions, clad in rusted steel and perforated by huge windows. Inside, the plan is wide open and floors bleed into walls, which in turn blend into ceilings. This effect is reinforced by a uniform use of plywood and similarly-colored materials throughout.

About the Portugese designer: “Didier Fiuza Faustino works reciprocally summons up art from architecture and architecture from art. Spaces, buildings and objects show themselves to be platforms for the intersection of the individual body and the collective body in their use. Each project represents a concept that subverts the social context, in which seeing is experimenting beyond submission to the dichotomy of the rules that normally mark out public space and private space.”
