Instagram rolling out ability to link a credit card and buy things inside the app

05 May
Screen capture: TechCrunch

After recently adding a video chat function, parent company Facebook continues with Instagram’s transformation from a mobile image sharing platform into a do-it-all application by adding the ability to pay for things within the app. The company has confirmed to TechCrunch that the native in-app payments feature is currently being rolled out to a limited number of users who will be able to make purchases from within the app.

Setup requires the registration of a debit or credit card and a security pin. Once that’s in place, you can book appointments and pay at restaurants, hair salons and similar establishments using the photo sharing app. In the future, users will also be able to purchase movie tickets and comparable items.

Screen capture: TechCrunch

The feature could potentially make a nice combination with Instagram’s shopping tags, which were introduced in 2016 and open a retailer website if you tap on a photo of a product. It’s not too difficult to see Instagram’s native payments being used for this kind of retail transaction as well. We’re intrigued by the possibilities for photographers: say, buying prints or photography services right from inside the app.

There’s no word on when the feature will be made available to more Instagram users, but given payments is a complex topic with all sorts of local rules and regulations, we’d expect availability of the function in your app will to a large degree depend on location.

ProGrade demonstrates first ever 1TB CFexpress card with 1,400MB/s read speed

10 Apr

Memory card manufacturer ProGrade claims to have shown off the first public demonstration of a CFexpress Type B card with 1TB capacity at NAB 2018 in Las Vegas. The card, which is backwards compatible with XQD formats, makes the most of the CFexpress specifications with blistering read/write speeds of 1,400MB/s and 1,000MB/s, respectively.

CFExpress is the latest standard from the CompactFlash Association, and is seen by many as the natural successor to the CFast and XQD formats. It was first announced in September of 2016, and the final specifications for version 1.0 were published in April of 2017. According to the specification list, version 1.0 of CFexpress Type B cards has a maximum transfer speed of 1970MB/s—roughly twice the maximum speed of XQD 2.0 cards—so ProGrade isn’t leaving much on the table with its debut version.

In its statement to DPReview last month, ProGrade said, “XQD cards [can] be upgraded to operate with the new CFexpress Type B cards if the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) chooses to update firmware in those devices.” This puts the onus on camera manufacturers such as Nikon and Sony to upgrade the firmware in its cameras with XQD card slots so CFexpress cards can be used.

ProGrade says its CFexpress cards will be available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities when they’re released later this year. We have reached out to Nikon and Sony regarding whether or not they plan to support CFexpress cards in the future, and will update this article accordingly when we hear back.

In addition to teasing its upcoming CFexpress cards, ProGrade also launched a collection of V90-rated SD cards with maximum read/write speeds of 250MB/s and 200MB/s, respectively. The cards will be available in early May in 64Gb, 128GB, and 256GB capacities for $ 100, $ 190, and $ 380, respectively.

ProGrade Digital is First To Publicly Demonstrate CFexpress™ 1.0 Technology in 1TB Capacity

1,400MB/Second Data Transfer Speed Reaches New Milestone

NAB, LAS VEGAS, NV – April 8, 2018 1:00 am Pacific—ProGrade Digital, founded with a mission to provide the highest quality professional grade digital memory cards and workflow solutions, has become the first company to publicly demonstrate the CFexpress™ 1.0 technology with 1TB of capacity. Debut of this important next generation digital memory card form factor, presented by CEO Wes Brewer and VP of Marketing Mark Lewis at NAB in Las Vegas, provides solid proof that the industry is moving toward productization of this new standard.

“The CFexpress standard has been evolving for several years within the CompactFlash Association as a successor to both CFast™ and XQD™ formats. We are pleased to be working within the CFA and aside device manufacturers to bring to market this next generation removable storage standard,” said Brewer. “Industry adoption of CFexpress will allow for much higher resolution and higher bit rate image capture than ever before in many still image and video capture devices. Faster offload speeds will also greatly benefit the post-capture workflow through the extremely high read speeds it provides. With our demonstration today, we’ve also been able to show compatibility for the CFexpress Type B form factor with XQD memory cards–showing operation of both card standards in a common Thunderbolt™ 3 reader.”

ProGrade Digital demonstrated performance benchmark speeds exceeding 1,400MB/second and burst write speeds of greater than 1,000MB/second–nearly three times faster than CFast memory cards and more than four times those for SDXC™ UHS-II.

CFexpress 1.0 Demonstrated Technology Key Features:

  • Industry-leading speeds
  • Greater than 1,400MB/second read
  • Greater than 1,000MB/second burst write
  • CFexpress Type B format factor with two lanes of PCIe® and NVM Express® support
  • XQD form factor interoperability
  • Dimensions: 29.6 mm x 38.5 mm x 3.8 mm

The founders of ProGrade Digital are industry veterans in the removable storage and digital photography industries. Each, having spent time at leading companies such as Lexar and SanDisk, brings extensive expertise in the design, development and manufacture of digital storage products, plus longstanding relationships with key manufacturing and supply chain partners. The company focuses exclusively on development of memory cards, card readers and workflow software for professional imaging markets. LaCie reveals slimmed down Rugged RAID Pro with USB-C and integrated SD card reader

10 Apr

French computer hardware company LaCie has announced the Rugged RAID Pro, the latest addition to its popular lineup of rugged external storage solutions.

Like its predecessors, the Rugged RAID Pro sticks with the iconic orange aesthetic made famous by Scottish product designer Neil Poulton. The signature design remains largely unchanged from its predecessors with the exception a few notable differences.

First, the integrated wrap-around cable is no longer present in the Rugged RAID Pro. While this might be a slight inconvenience, LaCie hopes the new, faster USB-C port and included Thunderbolt 3 cable (backwards compatible with USB-C connections) will make up for it. LaCie claims the max transfer speeds in RAID 0 configuration top out at 240MB/s, although you can configure the two internal hard drives to run in Raid 1 as well.

In addition to the new USB-C port, LaCie took a note out of its own book with the LaCie Copilot and added a UHS-II SD card reader to the Rugged RAID Pro. Now there’s no need to carry around an extra card reader if you’re using an SD card, which should be nice for those times when you don’t want to fuss with more cables than absolutely necessary.

Like all of LaCie’s ruggedized external drives, the Rugged RAID Pro is shock, dust and water resistant. LaCie claims it can handle drops from 1.2m/4ft without skipping a beat. In the event something does happen to it, LaCie includes three-years of Seagate Rescue Data Recovery Services. It also comes with one month of Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps subscription, a $ 50 value.

The Rugged RAID Pro will be hitting shelves with 4TB capacity ‘this quarter’ with an MSRP of $ 350. To learn more, head over to the LaCie website.

Ex-Lexar execs have launched a new memory card company, here’s why you should care

24 Feb

ProGrade Digital is a brand new memory card brand founded by former executives of memory maker Lexar.

In June 2017 parent company Micron unexpectedly announced the end of Lexar, but the brand was shortly after acquired by Chinese company Longsys. Now, a group of former executives from both managerial and technical backgrounds has teamed up to produce and market high-quality memory cards, directly competing with Lexar itself and other high-profile storage brands, such as SanDisk.

Initially the new company will offer two lines of cards: The CFast 2.0 cards will be available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities for $ 230, $ 350, and $ 700, respectively, and offer transfer speeds up to 550MB/sec. The UHS-II SD-card line comes in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB capacities for $ 55, $ 95, and $ 190, respectively, delivering speeds of up to 200MB/sec.

ProGrade says the controllers in all cards are optimized for use in professional cameras, and will each be tested from component-level down to individual memory chips before leaving the factory. Add a three year warranty into the mix, and the new cards look like an enticing alternative to the established brands for photographers who demand maximum reliability.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_5449192392″,”galleryId”:”5449192392″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

The brand was officially announced last week, but rather than simply cover the news, we decided to send ProGrade a few questions instead. Specifically, we wanted to know what sets the brand apart, how they expect to compete with the big guys, and why they started the company in the first place.

Mark Lewis, Vice President Marketing for ProGrade Digital, was kind enough to answer these questions:

Do we really need another memory card company?

Yes. With Micron’s sale of the Lexar brand and Western Digital’s purchase of SanDisk, there seems to be a shift in market focus for these two iconic brands and the future is uncertain.

Their decisions to realign product lines and focus solely on higher margin industrial and OEM SKUs opens up an opportunity for a new player—one with laser-focus on the professional market and whose intent it is to fill the void and service this market of professional photo, video and cinema customers. We at ProGrade Digital are that new digital memory card company who will champion their cause.

How will your company be different than the rest?

We bring several competitive advantages to help us stand apart. First, it’s about the people involved. At the executive and engineering level our team brings extensive experience, having worked for numerous years with leading components suppliers and vendors in the design and delivery of precision products specifically for this niche. Our marketing and sales group also has deep roots within the imaging industry, including professionals who not only produce still and motion capture for ProGrade Digital, but who also regularly create for private clients. Plus we acknowledge our growing family of influencers and ambassadors from both the still and motion capture worlds, individuals whom you will soon be reading more about.

The second way that we will stand apart from the competition is our product. I’ve already touched on the fact that, through our past employment, we bring a deep level of experience having built integrity into both the Lexar and SanDisk product lines. Our work here with ProGrade Digital not only lets us expand upon that foundation but, as a smaller firm, we now have the latitude and drive to make even better products specifically for the imaging markets. Two such ProGrade Digital imaging industry firsts include 100 percent in-factory test (to help us sustain a goal of zero percent failure), plus laser-etched serial numbers on each memory card. The serial number enables us to track firmware, controller and memory type. This ability to track a card’s manufacture gives us one more tool for being that much more proactive when it comes to supporting our customer base.

Other product strengths: as executive members of the SD Association and Compact Flash Association (CFA) we work with device manufacturers and other industry leaders on the development of new technologies. ProGrade Digital products are competitively priced, and distribution is limited so that we may preserve quality and control, plus maintain a direct relationship with our customer.

How can a David hope to compete against a Goliath?

If you know the story about David and Goliath you may recall that, despite Goliath’s physical size, level of experience and massive army to back him up, it was a young, small and nimble David who took precise aim and used the right weapon. ProGrade Digital is tightly focusing on a customer that we know, and specifically developing best-in-class products able to meet the needs of the professional imaging market.

What’s the future for card form factors such as SD, CFast, CFexpress and XQD?

The future for all memory cards continues to evolve. It is difficult to predict exactly what will happen to any particular form-factor, but the standards work currently being developed by the two memory card associations will help drive the direction.

Specifically, plans are in the works to move to the PCIe interface; the PCIe interface will allow for speeds to advance beyond some of the limits of the SATA interface. Of particular note are efforts being done by the Compact Flash Association (CFA) on the CFexpress form-factor. Their work has support from the major device manufacturers, and ProGrade Digital is at the forefront of those developments. As new standards gain in popularity, I believe that we will see some current form-factors slowly begin to phase out.

A big thank you to Mark for taking the time to answer these questions. If you want to learn more about this new memory card company or browse through ProGrade’s whole product line, head over to the ProGrade Digital website.

Integral unveils world’s first microSD card with 512GB capacity

25 Jan

It wasn’t too long ago that SanDisk launched the world’s biggest microSD card with a capacity of 400GB. Today, this record has been superseded by a UK company called Integral, which has unveiled what it says is the first shipping 512GB microSD memory card.

The card will work in any device that is compatible with the microSDXC standard—for example many Android mobile devices, drones, and some PCs—and offers a sustained sequential write speed of 10MB/s, which should be good enough for 4K video recording. Maximum speed is 80MB/s.

With half a Terabyte of storage space at your disposal, you really should be able to stop worrying about running out of memory, assuming you use a device with a microSD memory expansion slot.

The card is expected to be available from February, but no pricing information has been revealed yet. It’s fair to assume it won’t be cheap, however—Sandisk’s 400GB card still retails for around $ 250, and with an even higher capacity, the Integral is likely to tip the scales at $ 300 or more.

Photographer Josh Rossi is no stranger to creating epic photography for and of his family. His portraits of his daughter as Wonder Woman swept across the Internet like wildfire, and he’s continued doing amazing work, including this touching series where he transformed disabled kids into Justice League superheroes.

So why did he let some run-of-the-mill “family photographer” take last year’s Christmas pictures for him!?

He didn’t know either. In fact, he felt deeply ashamed by this lapse in judgement, and so he set to work creating something amazing to redeem himself this Holiday season. Cue Star Wars theme.

“I’m a huge Star Wars fan, and my wife has been asking me to do some pictures of us so I went all out this year for our family photos,” Rossi tells DPReview. And by all-out, he means he recreated the Star Wars: The Last Jedi posters featuring himself, his wife, and their two children instead of the lead actors.

“I had such a fun time doing this with my family,” he told us, “especially with my 1 year old.”

Rossi sent over a few behind the scenes images for us (below) and you can see the final shots in the gallery at the top.

Blackmagic unveils DeckLink 8K Pro capture card for ‘real time 8K workflows’

17 Nov

General opinion seems to be that 8K is a long way off, but it’s actually coming much faster than people think, and the industry is gearing up (literally) for it. Case in point: meet the new Blackmagic DeckLink 8K Pro capture card that ‘breaks new ground in high quality’ by supporting formats ranging from SD, to HD, Ultra HD, 4K, 8K and 8K DCI.

Oh, and it can also handle 64 channels of audio, stereoscopic 3D, and high frame rates… you know… just cause.

The card can do all of this because it’s the world’s first to feature quad link 12G?SDI bi-directional connections that Blackmagic says “can be used to either capture or playback quad link 8K, or for the simultaneous capture and playback of single or dual link SDI sources.” And as far as colors go, the DeckLink 8K Pro can work in 12?bit RGB 4:4:4 as well as Rec. 2020, which is, “a massive color space designed for high dynamic range Ultra HD and digital cinema work in 4K and 8K.”

All of this from this little powerhouse of a card:

Photo: Blackmagic

Of course, the bit Blackmagic won’t tell you is that you’ll need a monstrous computer to make any of this work… and an 8K monitor to boot. But if you were paying attention at the beginning of this article you’d already know: 8K is coming and it’s coming fast. Professional videographers and video editors may want to start preparing for it now.

InterBEE 2017, Tokyo, Japan – November 15, 2017 – Blackmagic Design today announced DeckLink 8K Pro, a new high performance capture and playback card featuring quad link 12G?SDI to allow real time high resolution 8K workflows. This new DeckLink 8K Pro breaks new ground in high quality as it supports all film and video formats from SD all the way up to 8K DCI, 12?bit RGB 4:4:4, plus it also handles advanced color spaces such as Rec. 2020 for deeper color and higher dynamic range. DeckLink 8K also handles a massive 64 channels of audio, stereoscopic 3D, high frame rates and more.

DeckLink 8K Pro will be available in early January for US$ 645 from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide.

In addition, Blackmagic Design has also announced a new low price of US$ 895 for DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G.

DeckLink 8K Pro will be demonstrated at InterBEE in Japan on the Blackmagic Design booth 8211.

DeckLink 8K Pro is the ultimate digital cinema capture and playback card. Featuring four quad link multi rate 12G?SDI connections, DeckLink 8K Pro can work in all SD, HD, Ultra HD, 4K, 8K and 8K DCI formats and is compatible with all existing professional SDI equipment. The 12G?SDI connections are also bi-directional so they can be used to either capture or playback quad link 8K, or for the simultaneous capture and playback of single or dual link SDI sources.

When it comes to quality, DeckLink 8K Pro is better than any other solution because it lets customers work with both more pixels than ever before and better pixels than ever before. The 8K images have 16 times more pixels than a regular 1080 HD image, which lets you reframe or scale shots with incredible fidelity and precision. DeckLink 8K Pro also works in 12?bit RGB 4:4:4 as well as Rec. 2020, which is a massive color space designed for high dynamic range Ultra HD and digital cinema work in 4K and 8K.

The combination of higher resolution, a vastly larger color space and incredible dynamic range means that DeckLink 8K Pro delivers the sharpest and most vivid images customers have ever seen for editing, color and high end visual effects work.

DeckLink 8K Pro supports capture and playback of 8 or 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 video and 10 or 12?bit RGB 4:4:4. Video can be captured as uncompressed or to industry standard broadcast quality ProRes and DNx files. DeckLink 8K Pro lets customers work at up to 60 frames per second in 8K and supports stereoscopic 3D for all modes up to 4K DCI at 60 frames per second in 12?bit RGB.

The advanced broadcast technology in DeckLink 8K Pro is built into an easy to install 8 lane generation 3 PCI Express for Mac, Windows, and Linux workstations. Customers get support for all legacy SD and HD formats, along with Ultra HD, DCI 4K, 8K and DCI 8K, as well as Rec. 601, 709 and 2020 color.

DeckLink 8K Pro is designed to work seamlessly with the upcoming DaVinci Resolve 14.2 Studio for an incredibly seamless editing, color and audio post production workflow that lets you master full resolution high dynamic range projects in full 8K resolution. In addition, DeckLink 8K Pro also works with other professional applications such as Final Cut Pro X, Media Composer, Premiere Pro, After Effects, ProTools, Nuke and more. There’s even a free software development kit so customers and OEMs can build their own custom solutions.

“DeckLink 8K Pro is our most advanced PCIe capture and playback card ever,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “It’s exciting because the 8K images have so much clarity and detail that it’s as if you’re looking out a window. Whether it’s for the 2020 Olympics or the next generation of Hollywood blockbusters, DeckLink 8K Pro has the speed, quality and compatibility customers need to do their best work!”

VNTG8 turns old 8mm film canisters into SD card holders

11 Nov

A new Kickstarter project wants to provide photographers with a retro storage solution for their SD and microSD cards. Called VNTG8, this project takes old 8mm film canisters and transforms them into SD card holders via a foam insert. This foam insert features six large pockets for full-size SD cards and six small pockets for microSD cards.

The foam insert has a somewhat clever radial design clearly inspired by the film spool it replaces. VNTG8 comes in two varieties, one that features a new Goldberg Brothers canister from remaining stock produced in the 1970s, the other featuring used canisters sourced from various places throughout the US.

In addition, the polyethylene foam insert will be offered as a standalone option for buyers who have their own 8mm film canisters, but only if the Kickstarter campaign reaches its $ 7,000 stretch goal. A Goldberg canister VNTG8 with foam insert is offered to backers who pledge at least $ 19. Delivery is estimated to start in February 2018 if the campaign is successful.
