Camera Showdown: the Nikon D5500 and D3300, Canon 70D and Sony a6000 Compared

05 Jul

With so many cameras on the market now it’s hard to know which one to buy if you’re just getting into digital photography. Should you get a full on DSLR or go for the more streamlined mirrorless ones?

4 Popular cameras compared

In this video Tony Northrup and his partner Chelsea do a comparison of four different cameras in roughly the same price range (under $ 1000) including:

  • The relatively new Nikon D5500 – $ 747 body only
  • Nikon D3300 – $ 497 with 18-55mm lens
  • Canon’s 70D – $ 949 body only
  • Sony’s a6000 – $ 548 body only

Watch as they put all four cameras through their paces doing a portrait in studio, outdoor landscape photography, and a sports simulation (action photography).

Each camera has pros and cons, so there is no one perfect choice. It’s about knowing what your needs are and selecting the one that is right for you.

03 Jul

Canon made an announcement this week warning of counterfeit 600EX-RT flash units being sold as the real deal. Equally as disconcerting as the idea of being ripped off is that these counterfeits are also incredibly difficult to tell apart from the real thing. Read more

Tamron and Sigma offer firmware update service for Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R live view issues

26 Jun

Tamron and Sigma have both announced updates for their lenses to provide full compatibility with Canon’s EOS 5DS and 5DS R models. Both firmware updates refer to behavior in live view shooting, something that has also caused problems in the Rebel T6s and T6i. This suggests that Canon’s latest models feature a change in the way they drive lenses. Read more

Production Canon EOS 5DS and 5DS R added to studio test scene

25 Jun

We’ve updated our Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R First Impressions to include studio test samples from final production versions of the cameras. The 5DS and 5DS R share a 50MP full-frame CMOS sensor and are identical in every way except for one: the 5DS contains an anti-aliasing filter, while the 5DS R has a self-canceling filter. While we’ve previously tested a beta version of the 5DS R, we’ve finally been able to put final production versions of the two cameras through our studio. Read more

Final firmware Canon EOS 5DSR real-world samples posted

24 Jun

Last night the Northern Lights tip-toed farther south than they usually do, and many regions of North America not accustomed to seeing them were treated to a light show. In hopes of catching it we hopped in the car with the Canon EOS 5DSR and headed away from the city lights. We’ve got a couple of aurora shots to share as well as a selection of others taken with a final 5DS R camera. See gallery

Eye for an ‘i’: Canon EOS Rebel T6i review posted

23 Jun

The Canon EOS Rebel T6i (750D) bears quite the resemblance to its Rebel T6s (760D) sibling. It’s essentially the same model, down to the 24.2MP APS-C sensor and 19-point AF module. What it doesn’t offer are the higher-end controls of the T6s, including a top-plate status LCD. Does the Rebel T6i hit all the right notes for a beginning photographer? Read more

Return of the Super Rebel: Canon EOS Rebel T6s (760D) in-depth review

15 Jun

Canon’s EOS Rebel T6s (760D) is easily the most advanced model yet to enter the company’s beginner-friendly DSLR lineup. It offers a new 24.2MP sensor and improved AF and metering systems compared to its predecessor. Its top plate LCD display, quick control dial and continuous AF in live view elevate it above its near-twin, the T6i, while Wi-Fi/NFC round out a solid set of features. We put its improvements to the test in our lab and in the real world. Read review
