NiSi launches ‘Starter,’ ‘Professional’ filter kits for Ricoh GR III cameras

Optics manufacturer NiSi has announced a new square filter holder for Ricoh GR III camera systems.

The filters, which are constructed of an aluminum alloy, fit on the end of the extending lens packed inside the GR III and can rotate a full 360-degrees. While a clever solution to adding photo filters to a point-and-shoot camera, this also means the filter holder will pop off when the camera is powered off and the lens retracts, so make sure to remove the filter holder when turning off the camera (and make sure the auto-off functionality is turned off).

As for the filters themselves, NiSi is offering two kits: the Starter Kit and the Professional Kit. The Starter Kit includes a graduated neutral density filter (GND8) and polarizer; the Professional Kit includes those two filters as well as an IR neutral density filter (ND8) and a natural night filter. Both kits include the holder and a cloth carrying pouch for safe transport.

The Starter and Professional NiSi filter kits for Ricoh GR III cameras are currently available on Amazon for $ 49 and $ 65, respectively.

Ricoh adds new ‘Handheld HDR’ still capture mode to its Theta V, Z1 360-degree cameras

Ricoh has released updated versions of its Ricoh Theta app that adds new ‘Handheld HDR’ functionality for its Theta V and Theta Z1 360-degree cameras.

The Ricoh Theta app update (version 1.26.0 on Android and version 2.8.0 on iOS) adds Ricoh’s new ‘Handheld HDR’ capture setting for still images and addresses a number of unspecified bug fixes. For the new HDR setting to work, the Theta V and Theta Z1 cameras need to be updated to the latest firmware, version 3.10.1 and version 1.20.1, respectively.

All of the apps and firmware updates are free to download. You can find instructions on how to update the Theta V and Theta Z1 firmware on Ricoh’s support pages.

Blackmagic Camera 6.6 adds new features, functionality to 4K, 6K Pocket Cinema Cameras

Blackmagic Design has announced a new firmware update for its Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and 6K systems. that brings new features and functionality. Blackmagic Camera 6.6 mainly focuses on the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (BMPCC4K), but also adds a few features to the newer Pocket Cinema Camera 6K (BMPCC6K) camera as well.

For the BMPCC6K, the Blackmagic Camera 6.6 update adds support for the Blackmagic Pocket Battery Grip, language localization, a built-in camera horizon tool, ‘pinch-to-zoom’ magnification up to 8x, USB PTP control support, the ability to type in customized frame guide ratio and improved autofocus performance.

The BMPCC4K receives all of the above features the BMPCC6K received with the Blackmagic Camera 6.6 update, as well as a slew of other new features. Below is a full list of the new features in the update for the BMPCC4K:

• Added support for 4K 2.4:1 4096 x 1712 recording in Blackmagic RAW up to 75 fps.
• Added support for 2.6K 2688 x 1512 up to 120 fps recording in Blackmagic RAW suitable for Super16mm lenses.
• Added support for 2.8K 4:3 2880 x 2160 recording in Blackmagic RAW up to 80 fps for anamorphic lenses.
• Added support for 2x desqueeze preview when recording 4K 4:3.
• Added support for 1.33x desqueeze preview.
• Added support for pinch to zoom up to 8x magnification.
• Added USB PTP control support.
• Added ability to embed custom 3D LUTs in Blackmagic RAW clips as metadata.
• Added common off-speed frame rate options above slider when changing frames.
• Added common ISO options above slider when changing ISO settings.
• Added 1:1 and 4:5 frame guide options.
• Added ability to monitor voltage level when powering via 12V DC connector.

Canon releases ‘Content Creator Kits’ for its 90D, G7X Mark III and M200 cameras

Canon has announced new Content Creator Kits for three of its newest camera systems: the EOS 90D, the PowerShot G7X Mark III and the EOS M200. In addition to the camera (and kit lens, in the case of the EOS 90D and EOS M200), each Content Creator Kit will include a new Canon accessory and a 32GB SanDisk SD card.

For the EOS 90D, the Content Creator Kit will include Canon’s new Stereo Microphone DM-E100, which is powered directly through 90D, negating the need for additional batteries. The PowerShot G7X Mark III and EOS M200, on the other hand, will feature Canon’s new Tripod Grip HG-100TBR, which has built-in storage for Canon’s BR-E1 wireless remote. The new tripod grip swivels 360-degrees and tilts 90-degrees to make vlogging and vertical video easier.

Sandmarc launches hybrid polarized ND filters for DSLR and mirrorless cameras

Back in August photographic filter maker Sandmarc launched a line of hybrid polarized ND filters for smartphone cameras. Now the same type of filter has been released for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.

Like the smartphone equivalent, the Hybrid Pro filter series combines the filter attributes of neutral density (ND) and polarizers into one single filter. Like a ND filter they help improve dynamic range of a shot in bright light, can help add motion blur to moving objects by allowing for slower shutter speeds, and offer more control over exposure and shutter speeds for film makers. Like a polarizer, they also help reduce reflections, protect highlights and boost color.

Sandmarc’s Hybrid Pro filters are made from multi-coated and anti-reflective glass for accurate color transmission. The company says the aluminum frame material makes the filters both durable and lightweight.

A set of filters includes ND16/PL, ND32/PL and ND64/PL variants to cover shooting in a range of light conditions. The filters are available in 58, 67, 77 and 82mm diameters and can be pre-ordered on the Sandmarc website now. Pricing starts at $ 169.99 for the 58mm version.

The Google Pixel 4 Will Feature Two Cameras Plus Enhanced Night Sight

Earlier this week Google announced the long-awaited Pixel 4, which promises to take smartphone photography to a whole new level.

This comes in the wake of Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro announcement last month, which saw the debut of a triple-camera setup and features such as Night Mode.

In other words, the Pixel 4 is a competitor in an intense fight to create the best cameras, the best lenses, and the best camera software.

So what does the Google Pixel 4 offer?

Let’s take a closer look:

First, the Google Pixel 4 features a dual-camera setup, offering the usual wide-angle lens alongside a new 2X telephoto option. This isn’t unique (Apple has regularly included “telephoto” lenses going all the way back to the iPhone 7 Plus), but it is a nice addition for those who need a bit more reach. You can use the 2X lens for tighter portraits, and it’s also useful for street photography, where you often need to photograph subjects from a distance.

Interestingly, Google has decided to keep the wide-angle camera at 12 megapixels, but has packed in a 16-megapixel sensor for the telephoto camera. While plenty of photographers will be excited by this jump in resolution, it remains to be seen whether such tiny pixels will result in significant noise.

The dual-camera setup should also improve Google’s Portrait Mode, and Google has promised more natural background blur and very precise edges (e.g., when dealing with hair). Truthfully, I’m skeptical. I’ve yet to see a Portrait mode photo that looks perfect on any smartphone camera. But I’ll wait until I see the results from the Pixel 4 before judging.

One cool new feature that will debut in the Pixel 4 is Live HDR. When you go to capture an HDR photo, you’ll be able to see a live HDR preview on your smartphone screen; this should give you a sense of what you can expect from the HDR+ effect.

Finally, if you enjoy doing astrophotography, you’re in luck: The Pixel 4 offers an improved Night Sight mode, in which you can take stunning photos of the night sky. It works by taking a series of long exposures, before blending them together to create a beautiful final photo. Note that you’ll need a tripod or other method of stabilization to get sharp astrophotography shots.

Overall, the Google Pixel 4 offers some impressive new features, even if none of them feel totally groundbreaking. Up until now, the Pixel lineup has dominated regarding low-light shooting, and the enhanced Night Sight suggests that Google plans to keep running with this success.

The Google Pixel 4 is currently available for preorder starting at $ 799 USD and will hit the shelves on October 24.

Best easy-to-use cameras of 2019

If you want a camera that you can pick up and use without having to page through the manual first, then this guide is for you. Some of the cameras in this guide have robust auto modes that let you ‘set it and forget it’, while others have clever interfaces to translate more complex subjects into easily comprehensible language, often with visual guides.

We’ve included cameras in various classes (and thus prices) in this guide, from compacts costing a few hundred dollars to a full-frame model that will produce much higher quality images but sells for around $ 1300. Read on to see what we think is the most user-friendly camera on the market.

Our pick: Canon EOS Rebel SL3 (EOS 250D)

The Canon SL3 works perfectly well in its Auto (A+) mode, where it will select the correct settings for the detected scene, such as a sunset. It also gives you the opportunity to tinker with exposure and color settings using a clever interface known as Creative Assist. There, you can adjust things like background blur (AKA aperture), brightness and color saturation (helpfully illustrated with tulips).

When you switch into ‘regular’ exposure modes (like Program), the camera still provides visual aids showing the effect of changing things like aperture and shutter speed, but this time you actually see the values (such as the F-number) you’re adjusting. And this interface shows you how to operate the camera if you ever opt to remove the ‘training wheels.’

As a camera, the SL3 takes very good photos, uses Canon’s excellent Dual Pixel AF system for video and live view, and is as close to ‘pocketable’ as you’ll get on a DSLR.

Canon plans to add 24p recording to select EOS, PowerShot cameras via firmware update

The people have spoken and Canon has listened. In an email sent to DPReview Canon says it ‘plans to introduce 24p mode (23.98fps) for movie recording via a series of future firmware updates for select [EOS and PowerShot] models.’

According to the email, the move comes ’In response to feedback from our customers about some of our recently launched EOS and PowerShot models.’ Canon specifically says the first models to receive the firmware update with support for 24p (23.98 fps) shooting modes will be the EOS 90D and the EOS RP at the end of October. ‘The PowerShot G7X Mark III and G5X Mark II will follow at the end of 2019 and the EOS M6 Mark II during the first half of 2020,’ reads the email.

Once the firmware is released for the cameras, each supported model will be able to shoot 24p (23.98 fps) in 4K and Full HD.

Polaroid Originals discontinues Spectra film due to the condition of aging cameras

Polaroid Originals has announced that it is discontinuing production of its wide-format Spectra film. The reason, CEO Oskar Smolokowski said in a statement on the company’s blog today, is due to the degraded nature of existing wide-format cameras.

‘Jamming and frequent breakdowns are now affecting the majority of these cameras,’ Smolokowski explained, ‘and unfortunately, this is not something we can influence with our film.’

In addition to selling its Spectra Color and B&W film products, Polaroid Originals also sold refurbished Polaroid Spectra cameras that were restored to full working order by specialists. This restoration process is no longer possible, however, and the company’s website now lists its refurbished cameras as sold out.

In his post, Smolokowski said, ‘After extensive testing, we have concluded that we cannot support these cameras any longer.’

The company will sell off its remaining batch of Specta film through its website, where the Spectra Color and B&W products are sold for $ 19.99 each; a triple-film pack is also offered for $ 55.99 USD. Smolokowski said the film will be on sale for a few months.
