Nikon updates Capture NX-D, ViewNX-i and Picture Control Utility to address various bugs

Nikon has updated its Capture NX-D, ViewNX-i and Picture Control Utility 2 programs to address multiple bugs and add new features.

Nikon Capture NX-D

Nikon Capture NX-D version 1.5.2 is mainly about fixing various crashes and glitches that would occur when using the app. Below is a thorough rundown of the ten issues that have been fixed, according to the changelog:

  1. The application would crash under some conditions.
  2. If the Specify size option was selected in the batch processing dialog, some time would elapse before the Start button would be available.
  3. Changes to image length in the Convert Files dialog would sometimes not be matched by changes to width.
  4. All changes to NEF/NRW (RAW) pictures made with NEF/NRW + JPEG enabled would be lost when the files were saved in JPEG format.
  5. Batch processing and file conversion could not be resumed once paused.
  6. The application would sometimes fail to launch.
  7. Image artifacts (“noise”) would increase in pictures saved in other formats.
  8. Straighten now functions as intended.
  9. Files saved at an image quality of “99” would be larger than those saved at an image quality of “100”.
  10. Portions of NEF (RAW) images shot with the Z 6 would sometimes not display correctly after the pictures were saved using NEF processing.

Nikon Capture NX-D version 1.5.2 can be downloaded for macOS and Windows computers on Nikon’s website.

Nikon ViewNX-i

Nikon ViewNX-i version 1.3.2 fixes two main issues found in version 1.3.1. The first is an issue that caused files saved at an image quality of 99 to be larger in size than images captured at an image quality of 100. The update also fixes a problem that caused files being saved using ‘Ctrl+S’ to lose or alter the XMP/IPTC information.

Nikon ViewNX-i version 1.3.2 can be downloaded for macOS and Windows computers on Nikon’s website.

Nikon Picture Control Utility

Last up is Picture Control Utility version 2.4.2. This update fixes an issue that caused some NEF images shot with Nikon Z6 cameras to not be displayed properly after the images were saved.

Picture Control Utility version 2.4.2 can be downloaded for macOS and Windows computers on Nikon’s website.

DxO updates Nik Collection 2018 with better macOS, Adobe compatibility and fewer bugs

DxO has announced a new update to Nik Collection, the plugin suite it acquired from Google back in October 2017. Nik Collection version 1.1 is the second major update since DxO relaunched it back in June 2018 and puts an emphasis on adding more compatibility for the latest operating systems and Adobe applications.

DxO says Nik Collection has been optimized for full compatibility with macOS Mojave as well as the 2019 versions of Adobe Lightroom Classic CC, Photoshop CC, and Photoshop Elements. DxO has also fixed a few bugs hidden from the days Nik Collection was in the hands of Google, ‘including problems with freezing when installing the macOS version of the software, block effects along the edges of the image, and compatibility issues with certain color profiles.’

Nik Collection on macOS has also been updated to work with the Adobe Photoshop competitor Serif Affinity Photo.

Nik Collection by DxO 2018 version 1.1 is available on the DxO website for €69/£59/$ 69. Users who purchased Nik Collection by DxO after the June 2018 update can update their software for free.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II firmware 1.0.4 update fixes ‘rare’ operational bugs

Canon has released firmware update 1.0.4 for the EOS 6D Mark II, adding important bug fixes for “rare instances” of issues with the touch panel and operation buttons. The update, which is available from Canon’s support website here, is about 30MB in size and includes the following changelog:

Firmware Version 1.0.4 incorporates the following fixes:

1. Corrects a phenomenon in which in rare instances, the operation buttons and some touch panel functions do not respond.

Adobe apologizes for Lightroom Classic CC bugs, releases bug fix update

The latest update to Lightroom Classic CC—a ‘massive update’ to camera profiles for both Lightroom and ACR—came complete with an infuriating set of bugs that, judging by our comment section, left Adobe users quite frustrated. But have no fear: the software giant is back with an apology and a slew of bug fixes in the form of Adobe Lightroom Classic CC 7.3.1.

The release went live this morning, complete with this apology on the Adobe blog:

We heard your feedback and felt that parts of the release didn’t uphold the level of quality that we hold ourselves to. We’re happy to report that these issues were resolved and now available for immediate download. Some of the issues resolved included converting presets, sorting and copying/pasting profiles, translation errors, along with crash fixes.

You can download the update and read the full release notes at this link, but here is the TL;DR about what this Lightroom Classic CC update fixes:

  • An issue where some presets were not converting to the new format.
  • An issue with B&W legacy presets where the profile resets to Adobe Standard
  • An issue where Develop presets were not sorting correctly
  • Translation errors in other languages for some profiles
  • An issue where users were unable to copy/sync Black and White Mix settings
  • Lightroom backup catalog error issues.
    • Note: To resolve corruption issue in the backed up catalogs, update to Lightroom Classic CC v7.3.1 and then back up your catalogs again. If you’re backing up your catalogs on macOS, see this known issue related to catalog compression below.
  • Known Issue on macOS only: When backing up your catalogs on macOS, Lightroom Classic doesn’t compress (zip) catalogs that have a file size less than 4 GB. As a workaround to this issue, manually compress the backed up catalog files. Compressed files take up less hard disk space. By default, Lightroom Classic saves backed up catalogs to the following location on macOS:
    • /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/[catalog name]/Backups

To update to the latest version, simply run the update in the Creative Cloud Desktop App.

Nikon D850 firmware 1.01 fixes long exposure green cast and other minor bugs

Nikon has released the first firmware update for its 45.7 MP full-frame D850 DSLR. Firmware version 1.01 comes with fixes for the following issues:

  • Users exiting the Clean image sensor menu entry after adding it to and entering it via My Menu would be returned not to My Menu but to Setup Menu.
  • Photos taken with On selected for Long exposure noise reduction would sometimes have increased noise or shadows with a greenish cast.
  • Slight aperture reset lag would sometimes occur after shooting at shutter speeds under 1/10 s (type E and PC-E lenses excluded).

These all sound like minor issues, but it is reassuring to know Nikon is taking the continuous improvement of its products seriously. Nikon updates software suite to accommodate D7500 – and fix some bugs

Nikon is preparing for the imminent shipping of its latest APS-C sensor DSLR by issuing updates to some of its supporting software applications. New versions of Capture NX-D, Camera Control Pro, ViewNX-i and Picture Control Utility have been made available in readiness for the Nikon D7500, which will begin to be distributed in early June in some regions.

Most of the updates deal principally with compatibility for the new camera, but Nikon has taken the opportunity to tackle a few bugs and to make some minor improvements to the user experience as well.

At the same time, new firmware has been issued for the KeyMission 170, which Nikon says makes the connection between the camera and iOS version of SnapBridge more reliable.

Capture NX-D

Changes from Version 1.4.3 to 1.4.5

• Added support for the D7500.
• Added support for Picture Control > Auto.
• Changed the Crop tool 11:7 crop to 10:7.
• Improved thumbnail display quality for JPEG images that contain only small thumbnails.

Fixed the following issues:
– White would print as light grey when Use this profile when printing was selected for Color Management > Printer Profile.
– Capture NX-D would quit unexpectedly if the Retouch Brush tool was displayed in full-screen view.

Camera Control Pro 2

Changes from Version 2.24.0 to 2.25.0

• Added support for the D7500.
• Picture Control Utility 2 can now be launched from a Picture Control > Edit button in the Image Processing panel.

ViewNX-i

Fixed the following issues:
– Facebook login could not be used.
– Images modified using Exposure compensation or White balance with On selected for Auto Red-Eye would sometimes not display correctly.

Picture Control Utility 2

Changes from Version 2.2.2 to 2.3.0

• Added support for the D7500.
• With the release of Camera Control Pro 2 version 2.25.0, Picture Control Utility 2 can now be launched using the Edit button next to Picture Control in the Camera Control Pro 2 Image Processing panel.

KeyMission 170 Firmware

Changes from Firmware Version 1.1 to 1.2

• Made improvements regarding an issue which resulted in connections between the camera and iOS 10.2-compatible versions of the SnapBridge 360/170 app becoming unstable.

Note: Users of iOS 10.2 will also need to upgrade the SnapBridge 360/170 app to the latest version, which supports iOS 10.2.

Nikon fixes bugs and adds compatibility for WT-7 Wi-Fi transmitter

Nikon has issued new firmware for its D810, D810A, D750, D7200 and D500 DSLR cameras that fixes a number of issues and which will allow those that can’t already to operate with the company’s WT-7 wireless transmitter. The transmitter itself also has new firmware to accommodate the added models, and to improve the reliability of its connection with SnapBridge on iOS 10.2 devices.

As well as equipping the D810, D810A, D750 and D7200 for life with the WT-7 the firmware attends to a number of bugs in the cameras, as marked below.

D500

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in unreliable connections between the camera and the iOS 10.2 version of the SnapBridge app.

D810

  • The WT-7 wireless transmitter is now supported.

Fixed the following issues:

  • Multiple exposures were not recorded correctly.
  • Incorrect histograms would be displayed for some images viewed in the RGB histogram display during playback.
  • If On was selected for Auto distortion control, distortion would appear at the edges of photos taken with NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine selected for Image quality and Medium selected for JPEG/TIFF recording > Image size.
  • Photos taken immediately after lenses were exchanged would not be recorded at the correct exposure.
  • The protect icon did not display correctly.
  • If On was selected for Auto distortion control, the camera would stop responding when the user attempted to take pictures with NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine selected for Image quality, Small selected for NEF (RAW) recording > Image size, and RAW primary – JPEG secondary selected for Secondary slot function.
  • Shutter speeds for the electronic front-curtain shutter would sometimes be faster than 1/2000 s.
  • Pictures would sometimes not be recorded.

D750

  • The WT-7 wireless transmitter is now supported.

Fixed the following issues:

  • Incorrect histograms would be displayed for some images viewed in the RGB histogram display during playback.
  • If On was selected for Auto distortion control, distortion would appear at the edges of photos taken with NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine selected for Image quality and Medium selected for Image size.
  • The option chosen for Custom Setting f5 (Customize command dials) > Change main/sub in CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU group f (Controls) would not be saved when Save settings was selected for Save/load settings in the SETUP MENU.
  • Pictures would sometimes not be recorded.

D7200

  • The WT-7 wireless transmitter is now supported.

Fixed the following issues:

  • If On was selected for Auto distortion control, distortion would appear at the edges of photos taken with NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine selected for Image quality and Medium selected for Image size.
  • Pictures would sometimes not be recorded.
  • Optimal exposure would sometimes not be achieved in photos taken in live view using a lens with electromagnetically controlled aperture (type E and PC-E lenses).
  • WT-7
  • Fixed an issue that resulted in unreliable connections between the camera and the iOS 10.2 version of the SnapBridge app.

Olympus E-M1 owners report firmware 4.2 bugs

Olympus OM-D E-M1 owners are reporting issues using their cameras after updating to firmware version 4.2. Forum member Denjw reports problems with focus stacking and corrupted image files after updating to 4.2, echoing comments from German blogger Pen-and-Tell. Firmware 4.2 in part added support to the E-M1 for focus stacking with the 300mm F4, 8mm F1.8 fisheye and 7-14mm F2.8 Pro lenses. We’ve reached out to Olympus for comment and will update this story with any further information.
