Resources for shooting this weekend’s Super Blood Wolf Moon

19 Jan
Photo captured and provided by NASA

Astrophotography fans will be treated to the sight of a rare ‘super blood wolf Moon’ this weekend, and lots of helpful people are offering advice on how best to photograph it. The event will bring together the drama of the year’s first full moon at the same time as a total lunar eclipse – and the Moon passing very close to the earth. Mix all three factors and we get a very large-looking full Moon that appears a deep copper color in the sky.

Depending on where you live the blood Moon will be visible on the evening of Sunday 20th or the early morning of Monday 21st, but only those in the Americas, northern and western Europe, the eastern Pacific and the north-eastern tip of Russia will be able to see the full eclipse. Some in western Africa may get a partial eclipse.

The event will occur as the Moon passes into the earth’s shadow. As this happens sunlight is refracted by the earth’s atmosphere, bending around the earth to faintly illuminate the Moon in a warm red light – hence the ‘blood Moon’ name. As the moon will appear relatively dim in the sky it’s a great chance to get a manageable exposure to include the Moon and stars in a single shot. ‘Wolf’ in the name is present because it will be the first full moon of the year.

Resources:

  • PhotoPills has produced a video explaining how to use its app to determine where the Moon will appear and its size, so you can plan your foreground and composition.
  • Mr Eclipse is a constant source of information on different ways to capture the spectacle, with tips and techniques for a wide range of shots.
  • Fred Espenak from Mr Eclipse has also written a piece for the Nikon USA website on the subject, and shows some pretty stunning pictures.
  • Newsweek has a piece by physics professor Walter Freeman explaining a little more how and why this phenomenon occurs.
  • The Royal Astronomical Society also has information and advice for observers in the UK, where the full eclipse will occur at 05.12GMT. The official guidelines state that to enjoy the sight ‘all you have to do is dress warmly and go outside.’ Sensible advice.

3 Teas for Diabetes To Lower Your Blood Sugar, Cholesterol and Blood Pressure

20 Mar

Tea for Obat Herbal? Yes, different teas offer a variety of health-promoting benefits, especially for people dealing with type 2 diabetes. These benefits include helping with weight loss, lowering high blood pressure, and protecting your body’s cells against the damage that high blood sugar levels can cause. Let’s take a closer look at some specifics:

1. Hibiscus tea. One of the common parts of type 2 diabetes is having high blood pressure or hypertension and high blood lipids (that is, fats including cholesterol and trigylcerides, as part of the whole picture of hyperlipidemia), in addition to problems with blood sugar regulation.

Hibiscus is an herb (plant) that several research studies have shown can lower high blood pressure and get high blood lipid levels down as well, including in type 2 diabetes. Other than rare allergic reactions, hibiscus is well-tolerated and seems to have no side-effects.

To get health benefits, you may need to drink multiple cups of well-steeped hibiscus tea each day, but isn’t that better than having to take a high dose of a drug to lower blood pressure? Most people on antihypertensive drugs report side effects that bring down their quality of life.

Doctors are not sure of all of the mechanisms by which hibiscus can help, but it probably includes the effects of substances called anthocyanins in the plant. These compounds can block the oxidation of “bad” LDL cholesterol, which is the damaging factor in developing heart and blood vessel disease.

2. Green tea. Green tea has been touted as a supposed miracle substance on its own. Using antioxidant effects, green tea may even protect the retina of the eye against the damage that high blood sugars can cause. But it does not stop there. Flavonols in green tea probably also help protect against the damage from LDL cholesterol on blood vessels.

Certain flavonols may also reduce insulin resistance, which is a core reason why type 2 diabetics cannot use glucose in their bloodstream effectively as fuel for their cells. Green tea may help somewhat with the high blood sugar, but perhaps not as much as other natural substances.

Many supplement makers claim that green tea extracts will be enough to cause major weight loss, but the research is much less clearcut. Still, the evidence shows that green tea can produce a small weight loss effect in people who are already overweight. The amount of weight loss, unfortunately, does not appear to be clinically meaningful. Still, the other health benefits of green tea make it a worthy addition to your daily regimen.

3. Fenugreek. If you want to get a bit more out there in your herbal tea choices, fenugreek’s claim to fame is an ability to lower high blood sugar levels better than some other natural supplements or herbs. Some studies suggest that this herb may help you reduce your HbA1C, which is the longer term measure of how well your blood sugar has been controlled for a period of about 3 months at a time.

Blood Red: 30 Vintage Soviet Accident Prevention Posters

03 Jul

[ By Steve in Design & Graphics & Branding. ]

soviet-accident-prevention-poster-0
In Soviet Russia, accident prevent you! That’s the message rendered in classic commie-propaganda style via these thirty soviet accident prevention posters.

soviet-accident-prevention-poster-1

soviet-accident-prevention-poster-3

Graphic workplace accident prevention posters are nothing new, neither are they the purview of any one nation. That said, this selection of vintage Soviet accident prevention posters reflects a period in Russian history that was drenched in blood, sorrow, violence and loss – and not only on the factory floor.

Oleg Atbashian, a former citizen of the Soviet Union who moved to the United States in 1994, doesn’t recall ever seeing these horrifying-to-the-point-of-being-comical posters. Atbashian worked as a metal worker apprentice at a large Ukrainian factory when he was a teenager and later, as a visual agitprop (agitation and propaganda) artist specializing in posters directed at construction workers. Atbashian was in the right place; just at the wrong time.

Indeed, Atbashian’s USSR of the 1970s was quite a different place from the fledgling “communist paradise” of Lenin and Stalin. “They (the posters) reflect the zeitgeist of a completely different, less sensitive generation of Soviet citizens,” explains Atbashian, “who were so used to being disciplined, humiliated, and terrorized by the authorities that the least of their concerns would be to question some silly presumptive posters that described them as a herd of bumbling idiots being gored by machinery.” Geez Oleg, tell us what you really think!

soviet-accident-prevention-poster-30

soviet-accident-prevention-poster-13

Just as the communist system of government represented a clean break from the Czarist regimes which preceded it, graphic art in the nascent Soviet Union aspired to blaze a new trail in lockstep with the policies and philosophies of the Red Revolution.

Robotic Printer Creates Artist’s Portrait Using His Blood

28 Aug

[ By Steph in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

Robotic Blood Printer 1

Blood streams from Ted Lawson‘s arm into a CNC printer, which uses it like ink or paint to robotically create the Brooklyn-based artist’s image. ‘Ghost in the Machine’ is a life-sized nude self-portrait rendered in just about the most graphic way possible, the whole process captured on video as an alarming amount of blood is applied to a blank white surface.

Robotic Blood Painting 2

Visibly drained by the process, Lawson sits beside the machine as it works, replenishing himself with juice as his blood streams out in little squiggles. At first, the image is abstract, slowly coming together as the robot follows the guidelines of the illustration.

Robotic Blood Painting 3

“I’m generally not into doing selfies, particularly nude ones, but when I came up with the idea to connect my blood directly to the robot (CNC machine), it just made too much sense to not try one as a full nude self-portrait,” Lawson told the Associated Press.

Robotic Blood Painting 4

“In this series I’m really just trying to make a good drawing, which requires a lot of process and spontaneity to achieve. I do consider these works to be drawings and not prints, in that I allow the robot to make certain mistakes or leave in certain glitches on purpose.”

Robotic Blood Painting 5

The final print will be on display at the Joseph Gross Gallery in New York City from September 11th through October 4th as part of Lawson’s solo exhibition, “The Map Is Not the Territory.”

House of Hemp and Blood: 16 Futuristic Building Materials

07 Oct

[ By Steph in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

Future building materials main
Future buildings could be made of artificial human bone, hemp, bacterial byproducts or concrete that absorbs greenhouse gas emissions and lasts thousands of years. Innovations in building materials have led to synthetic creations that are stronger, lighter and more sustainable than those we already use, potentially leading to architecture unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.

Animal Blood Bricks

Future Building Materials Blood Bricks

Abundant and yet almost always wasted, animal blood is an unlikely – and grisly – possible base material for building bricks. Architectural graduate Jack Munro sterilized the blood, added sand and baked them together to yield a strong, traditional-looking brick that’s also waterproof.

Translucent Concrete

Future building materials translucent concrete

Litracon is a combination of optical fibers and fine concrete, produced as prefabricated building blocks for a translucent glass-like look with surprising strength. It’s handmade, so each block has its own individual pattern of light.

Bacteria Building Blocks

Future Building Materials Bacteria

Will bacteria build the walls of our houses in the future? Scientists have directed the creation of bioplastics, cellulose and other materials by feeding certain materials to specific varieties of bacteria. The resulting metabolic process produces solid, surprisingly durable byproducts that could be used for all kinds of processes. Bacteria might even create bricks that could be used for building on Mars.

Concrete That Lasts 16,000 Years

Future Building Materials Concrete 16000

Not only would the new concrete being developed at MIT drastically reduce the carbon emissions currently associated with the manufacturing of this material, it would also result in an astonishing reduction in the amount needed in the first place. That’s because it’s strong enough to last for an incredible 16,000 years. This concrete will not only be stronger, but also lighter and thinner, so large-scale, lightweight structures require far less material.

Hempcrete: Hemp Biocomposite

Future Building Materials Hempcrete

A new bio-composite, thermal wall material made of hemp, lime and water is not only eco-friendly but actually carbon-negative thanks to the amount of CO2 stored during the process of growing and harvesting hemp. It’s 100% recyclable, waterproof and fireproof and could be used for everything from walls and insulation to flooring. Once demolished, the material can be used as fertilizer.

SensiTile

Future Building Materials SensiTile

Sensitiles are made up of a light-conducting matrix embedded in a substrate, so that they redirect and scatter incoming light in a similar way as fiber optics. Shadow-producing movements around these tiles produce an interesting rippling effect, and the tiles absorb and ‘bleed’ colors.
