Lego Blocks + iPad = Classic 1984 Macintosh Computer

Technology comes full circle thanks to an iPad and a creative usage of Lego blocks. Oslo-based designers Jason Kinsella and Charlotte Bakken recreated a classic 1984 Macintosh computer with a modern twist, turning the light and sleek tablet into a bulky retro monitor.

The stop-motion film above shows how the technology/toy mashup was created, complete with a floppy disk slot and old school Macintosh logo.

The iPad simply slides in from the side, making the Lego housing a cool-looking place to dock the iPad so you can read or watch a movie.

The project brings Apple back to its early years, emphasizing how the brand has evolved over the past three decades. Of course, the Lego monitor is actually much smaller than the original, since it has to accommodate the comparatively miniature screen of the iPad.

LEGO Brooklyn: Artist Recreates Borough with Plastic Blocks

Familiar scenes from Brooklyn, from the local flower shop to the train station, are lovingly rendered in pixelated plastic by local resident and artist Jonathan Lopes. Lopes loves BK so much, he has filled his entire 400-square-foot living room with LEGO replicas of his neighborhood – and he does it without altering the bricks at all, working within the limitations of the retail sets.

The obsession started with a Star Wars LEGO model purchased a decade ago, leading to the design of his own creations. By 2011, Lopes had used a half-million bricks to mimic the Apollo Theater, trolleys in Red Hook, Firehouse Engine 226 and a gardening shop on Hoyt Street.

Lopes told the New York Daily News that he works out his ideas while riding on the subway. Some of the pieces, like a four-foot-tall model of the Williamsburg Savings Bank made of 12,000 bricks, go on display around the city, while others are dismantled almost as soon as they’re finished to build something new.

LEGO House: Experience Center Made of Interlocking Blocks

Fans wanting to fully experience the world of LEGO are sure to marvel at this newly-revealed hometown headquarters – the whole complex is being build up like a giant stack of interlocked bricks.

Designed by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) and set to be built in Billund, Denmark, the structure will have displays, cafes and shops surrounded by a public square.

Between interior and exterior areas, the completed project will have close to 10,000 square meters of programmed and open space, and its creators anticipate 250,000 annual visitors.

The building will showcase past, present and near-future LEGO designs, but also artwork made from LEGOs and other cultural phenomena beyond its original uses.

GoGo & Multiplo: Modular Building Blocks for Kids & Adults

Two very similar designs with somewhat different audiences, Multiplo emphasizes their kit-of-parts approach as a means toward making convertible adult furniture, while Gogo Blocks are presented as a way for children to build their own play spaces, forts and mazes.

Sinclair Smith designed the Blocks as a student project, and, when he came across Multiplo, celebrated and encouraged HeyTeam‘s development of its parallel project.

But the blocks can work as furniture too, writes Smith: “Gogo blocks are a children’s play system of foam pillows for building and imagining, and are specifically scaled to form a twin mattress for sleepover guests.”

As to Multiplo: users are welcome to invent their own configurations and transformations, but core starting suggestions include couches, beds and a square lounge pit for seating groups. Also, the color palette is a bit more passable for older users (at least: young adults), being somewhat less colorful than that of its cousin, Gogo.

Cool Colors: Rainbow Igloo Built of 500 Translucent Blocks

When your prospective future mother-in-law takes the time to fill hundreds of cartons with colored water before your visit, it would behoove you to do something with them. And thus this unexpected collaboration was born.

Braving temperatures down to negative 25 degrees (both Fahrenheit and Celcius), engineering student Daniel Gray and his girlfriend Kathleen Starrie took these frozen ice bricked (formed by Brigid Burton) and constructed an incredible structure.

Instead of carving each block, Gray developed a kind of ‘snowcrete’, using flexible layers of snow as mortar to create the hemispherical shape required (after extensive calculations to make sure it was of a size that would not run them out of building materials).

150 combined work-hours and 5 days later, the result is nothing short of stunning – the semi-spontaneous igloo is colorful by day, but even more dazzling by night when lit from the inside. If this was a pre-marital tes, one can only hope he passed with flying (or frozen) colors.
