  • Opinion: Why the FZ1000 isn’t just another superzoom…

    FZ1000_opinion-1.jpg

Superzoom cameras offer DSLR-style ergonomics and enormous zoom ranges, which make them very popular among novice photographers and enthusiasts looking for a ‘take everywhere’ option for travel and day-to-day shooting. They have not, traditionally, impressed us with their image quality. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 is a very different beast though, and has impressed us with its specification, performance and price. In this short article, editor Barnaby Britton explains why the FZ1000 is definitely not ‘just another superzoom’. Read more

  • Exposing another side of Sochi

    RH110704_SP1302_Adler.jpg

Hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics, Sochi has absorbed an influx of athletes, fans and media for two weeks of competition. What isn’t apparent from the coverage is what Sochi looks most of the rest of the year – a seaside, summer resort town. Since 2007 photographer Rob Hornstra and writer Arnold van Bruggen have been documenting Sochi as they saw it change from quiet summer getaway to a world stage. Take a look at a different Sochi, as seen through Hornstra’s lens. See gallery

  • Another Hasselblad Rebadge or Photoshopped Hoax?

    Hasselblad-Solar-camera_zpsc994b282.jpg

Various rumor sites are today reporting Hasselblad is poised to release a $ 10,000 rebadge of the Sony A7 that was just announced yesterday. Some even report it as if it’s a real product. Even just a cursory glance at the image suggests it’s a quick Photoshop job to add a wood grip and lighten the tint of the body. The serial number on the lens also suspiciously matches the product shots Sony released yesterday as well. What do you think?

The Luminous Landscape – What’s New

  • 7 January, 2013 – Oh No, Not Another Superzoom!

Yes, another Superzoom. The Panasonic SX50, with the longest zoom range available at 24–1200mm equiv, all with decent (though not really great) image quality, and a very competative price.

Is this the best Superzoom yet? Is it worth your attention? Find out in my just published review.

"Every time I go back to a module I had already seen, I learn additional things.  I have never seen tutorials that have the excellent mix of what the features are,
how to use them, enough of the under-the-hood information
and concepts so that I can utilize the features creatively and efficiently,
and just enough humor to keep the motivation level high.  Wow!"

  • Lost in Photoshop: another old photo restoration part i

I have a tip about straightening the rotation of images — particularly scanned images. the old photo is younger than 1901 and older than 1930, I believe. Given the image size (approximately 2 1/4 x 3 1/2) I would guess that it was taken by a Kodak Brownie (probably ‘2’) camera. The original image had faded quite a bit. I attempt to use various techniques to recover the image, including: level adjustments, use of high pass filter, use of surface blur filter, use of “split masks”, and attempting to reconstitute “depth” using linear burn (non-destructively) in an “overlay” [not the mode] layer.
