    Getty Images has taken a major step towards addressing unauthorized image use by allowing low resolution embedding of images for no charge, with no watermark, on non-commercial ‘blogs and social media’. Admitting that combatting widespread unauthorized image use by the world’s Internet users is impractical, Getty is pitching the new embedding service, which is available for more than 35 million photographs as a legal alternative to image theft.   • New CompactFlash card to allow RAID-style ‘mirroring’

    Japanese company Amulet is poised to release a compact flash card allowing images and video files images to be backed up instantly using RAID-style ‘mirroring’. In mirroring mode, the card effectively becomes two storage devices, and records images to both partitions simultaneously. As such, a 64GB card offers 32GB of storage space in mirroring mode. The card can be switched between standard and mirroring mode at will, although formatting is required after switching. Click through for more details.

  • Stock photo agency Alamy to allow mobile photos

    Recalling its previous blanket ban against all mobile photography, international stock photo agency Alamy has announced that it will now allow images taken on mobile devices in its Live News service. To be accepted into Live News, Alamy has stated that smartphone images must have news, sports or entertainment value. And in case you were wondering, ‘Instagram-style filters’ are not allowed.   • Microsoft Word 2010 – Allow the Insert Key to Overwrite Existing Text

    Overwrite existing text in Word 2010 documents simply by pressing the Insert key.

    Normally when you type inside pre-existing text in a Microsoft Word 2010 document, your new text pushes existing text to the right. This “insert” mode is the default and lets you easily add text to pre-existing paragraphs.

    In some cases, however, you may want your text to overwrite what is already in the document. Perhaps you have written a word and transposed a couple of characters. You could carefully highlight the offending characters and then type the correct order. Or, move your cursor to the right of the offending characters, press Backspace twice, then type the correct characters. However, with an “overwrite” or “overtype” mode you can move your cursor directly on top of the first offending character, press the Insert key, and then start typing – your new characters will overwrite the existing text….

    Internet Explorer 9 keeps your current zoom level and text size when opening up new tabs or windows. If you prefer to have different settings, make this tweak.

    To make it easier to read small text or view intricate pictures inside Windows Internet Explorer 9, especially useful for some older users, you can adjust the zoom level and / or text size. For example, pressing Ctrl+Shift++ zooms in (hold down the Ctrl, Shift, and + keys), pressing Ctrl+Shift+- (hold down the Ctrl, Shift, and – keys) zooms out, or Ctrl+Shift+0 (hold down the Ctrl, Shift, and zero) resets to the default zoom (100%).

    When you make such a change, Internet Explorer 9 assumes that you want to keep these settings whenever opening a new tab or window. This way if you have difficulty reading web pages and always need Internet Explorer to zoom in, you will not have to do so manually each time. …
