Abandoned Ship: Spacecraft Discovered in Huge Derelict Hangar

space shuttle destroyed prototype

Remarkably intact and beautifully documented by a Russian urban explorer, this space shuttle prototype rests in a massive above-ground graveyard at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, deserted due to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Originally destined to dock with Soviet space station Mir, the model was almost finished and had even completed a test flight when the facility was shut down in the early 1990s.

Photographer Ralph Mirebs identified the massive (yet somehow still unassuming) structure as an excellent target for exploration, but did not know just how many surprises were in store for him when he took his camera into the ruins. Positioning himself on catwalks and even entering spacecraft models, he was able to take pictures of an amazing array of spaces and equipment.

As incredible as the outside of the craft may be, the insides are all the more fascinating, filled with the equipment intended to take it to space that somehow seems surprisingly fragile right here on the ground.

Taking Their Lumps: 12 Bitter Sweet Abandoned Sugar Mills

14 Sep

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned-sugar-mill-clarksburg-1
Obesity epidemic notwithstanding, the world boasts more abandoned sugar mills than you can shake a peppermint stick at.

abandoned-sugar-mill-clarksburg-3

abandoned-sugar-mill-clarksburg-4

The former Delta Sugar Company mill in Clarksburg, Yolo County, California was constructed between 1934 and 1936… it took two years because the mill was transported by railroad, piece by piece, from its original location in Utah. By the early 1990s the mill became uneconomical to operate and in 1993 it was closed.

abandoned-sugar-mill-clarksburg-2

abandoned-sugar-mill-clarksburg-5

After lying abandoned for over 7 years, the “Old Sugar Mill” began to show some signs of life when some sections were upcycled into a grape-crushing and wine-tasting facility for several local wineries. Kudos to Flickr user Mark Brooks (cal_gecko), who exquisitely photo-documented the complex in late July of 2010.

Falling Like A Domino

abandoned-sugar-mill-domino-1

abandoned-sugar-mill-domino-2

The iconic Domino Sugar Refinery in Brooklyn, NYC’s Williamsburg neighborhood was built in 1882 on the site of an even earlier sugar mill that opened in 1856. At one point the plant employed over 4,000 workers and supplied half the sugar consumed in the United States. By the year 2000 when the factory closed, however, only 225 employees still worked there. The Domino Sugar Refinery was sold to developers in early 2014 and the wrecking ball began swinging in October.

Sugar Beaten

abandoned-sugar-mill-longmont-1

abandoned-sugar-mill-longmont-2

The Great Western Sugar Company mill in Longmont, Colorado closed in 1977 and – possibly due to the dearth of wineries in the region – has sat derelict and abandoned for well over thirty years.

abandoned-sugar-mill-longmont-3

The factory opened in 1903 and processed locally-grown sugar beets. Rumor has it the mill is haunted, perhaps by sweet-toothed ghosts. Flickr user Sheila Dee (sheiladeeisme) visited the decrepit factory in January of 2013.

American Paia

abandoned-sugar-mill-haiku-1

Paia, on the island of Maui, Hawaii may be “The World Capitol of Windsurfing” but the town of 2,668 (as of 2010) has another claim to fame: it’s where the once cutting-edge Haiku Sugar Mill processed sugar cane into brown sugar.

abandoned-sugar-mill-haiku-2

abandoned-sugar-mill-haiku-3

Opening in 1861 and powered by a steam engine, the mill only operated for 18 years and has sat abandoned for well over a century. These days its ruins are a popular wedding photography and reception venue. Flickr user Maria Caridad snapped some of the more obscure areas of the abandoned mill on June 28th of 2009.

Ghost Church: Creepy Statues Invade Abandoned Czech Chapel

11 Sep

[ By Steph in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

ghost church 1

If you just happen to stumble upon the dilapidated St. George’s Church in the Czech Republic, passing through the crumbling entrance to glance around at the shadowy interior, you might just be in for the most terrifying moment of your life. Abandoned since the 1960s, the church has long since been devoid of human worshippers, but that doesn’t mean it’s empty. Ghostly shrouded figures line its pews, some hovering in doorways and in the aisles.

ghsot church 4

Located in the northwestern Bohemia town of Luková, the ‘Church of Nine Ghosts’ first fell into disrepair after the ceiling caved in during a funeral service in 1968. Locals took that as a bad omen, and boarded up the 14th century structure, holding services outside instead. But many residents saw the church as an important part of the town’s history, and wanted to see it restored.

ghost church 2

ghost church 3

“The figures represent the ghosts of Sudeten Germans who lived in Lukova before World War Two and who came to pray at this church every Sunday,” says artist Jakub Hadrava, who was commissioned to create the installation. “I hope to show the world that this place had a past and it was a normal part of everyday life, but that fate has a huge influence on our lives.”

ghost church 5

Made of plaster, the ghosts were put in place over the summer of 2014 in the hopes of drawing more tourists to the region, raising money to rehabilitate the historic 1352 church. The plan worked, as people have come from all over the world to see the statues in this unusual environment, and the church will soon be restored to its former glory.

Fender Bender Menders: 15 Abandoned Auto Body Shops

06 Sep

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned-auto-body-1
Auto body repair requires extensive training and expensive tooling these days, setting classic independent auto body shops squarely on the road to ruins.

abandoned-auto-body-1b

Automotive innovations such as aluminum body panels and self-cleaning paint are cutting-edge today but they’ll be commonplace tomorrow, so if you’re thinking of taking the family ride down to (insert folksy name here) Auto Body next time you dent a door, fuggeddaboutit! End result: hundreds of abandoned auto body shops across the nation, from big cities to tiny towns like Keeler, California (population 66).

Post No Bills

abandoned-auto-body-labelscar-2a

abandoned-auto-body-labelscar-2b
Indeed, neighborhood auto body shops are fading away… and so are their signs. Flickr user suism1 captured the rough and weathered “labelscar” above on January 13th of 2010.

Unclean Sweep

abandoned-auto-body-broomworks-3

“I doubt the Liberty Broom Works or the Kustom Paint & Body Shop have been at this location for quite a while,” comments Barbara Hullett of Hullett Photography about the gritty abandoned edifice above. Located in Liberty, North Carolina, the curious conjunction of defunct businesses begs the question: which one was abandoned first, the broom works or the body shop?

Them’s The Brakes

abandoned-auto-body-4a

abandoned-auto-body-4b

Small auto body and car repair shops of a certain age typically share a similar style and structure – cheap, practical, and plenty of garage doors. Though modern quick-lube and oil change shops are often built on this type of plan, it’s rare that one of the chain stores takes over a closed or abandoned body shop. Flickr user Justin Wolfe managed to find two similar-looking abandoned auto body shops within a stone’s throw of each other in Newport News, Virginia, on September 20th of 2013.

Import Expired

abandoned-auto-body-cutler-5

Owners of Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin and other exotic foreign makes must be scratching their heads, wiping their monocles and driving veddy cawefuwy since the Cutler Import Body Shop threw in the grimy, oil-stained towel. The Grandview Heights, Ohio establishment was captured in all its letter-shedding glory on February 7th, 2009 by Flickr user brew127.

Dry Doc: 10 Abandoned Walk-in Public Health Clinics

30 Aug

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

_DUB6980
It’s prognosis negative (and not in a good way) for these abandoned walk-in clinics – obviously everyone within walking distance was perfectly healthy.

_DUB7001

You know there’s a chronic public health crisis when the local public clinic’s doctor high-tails it outta town and the clinic itself has been abandoned for years. The photos above, taken by Mike DuBose of UMNS during the height of the 2015 Ebola outbreak, features fisherman and village elder Boh Lion at an abandoned health clinic in Monogaga, Côte d’Ivoire. It’s not stated whether Lion owns the sleeping dog and small goat in the first photo.

Kissimmee Goodbye

abandoned-walk-in-clinic-florida-1

abandoned-walk-in-clinic-florida-2

abandoned-walk-in-clinic-florida-4

Does The Walking Dead need a new shooting location? Flickr users AsherXIII and Adxm Petersxn captured this rather generic Kissimmee, Florida “Walk-In Clinic” in July of 2012 and February of 2014, respectively. Rumor has it the clinic was the scene of a drive-by shooting in late 2006… at least the victims, if any, were in the right place at the wrong time.

Clinically Creepy

abandoned-walk-in-clinic-nichitsu-1

abandoned-walk-in-clinic-nichitsu-4

Haikyo explorer and blogger Jordy Meow of Totoro Times visited the former mining town (and current ghost town) of Nichitsu in December of 2011, and he brought his figurine “friends” Yoko and Haruhi along for the adventure. Though the town’s clinic is in very bad shape due to the elements and local vandals, much remains from what must have been a hasty evacuation… and by “remains”, we mean human remains preserved in formaldehyde-filled glass containers.

abandoned-walk-in-clinic-nichitsu-3

abandoned-walk-in-clinic-nichitsu-2

That’s Haruhi above, posing with a glass jar containing a human ear… how sweet. Located in Saitama prefecture north of Tokyo, Nichitsu was abandoned around 30 years ago when the mine played out.

marty-feldman-AB-normal-brain

According to Jordy Meow, visitors to the ex-clinic occasionally abscond with a medical sample or two. The most famous, er, infamous missing sample is the legendary “Nichitsu Brain”. Now who in their right mind would want to steal a brain?

City Museum: Abandoned Warehouse Full of Caves, Rides & Slides

19 Aug

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ]

city museum exterior playground

Somewhere between a huge funhouse, playground and circus, the City Museum of St. Louis may be the most entertaining and interactive urban architectural experiment in the world. And if you are not having a good time, you can always hop on the 10-story slide, a remnant of the structure’s days as a shoe factory (originally designed to send products down the side of the building).

city museum bridge

Eclectic from its stylings to its offerings, this unique place features everything from recycled buses and airplanes to giant multi-story slides and artificial caverns as well as more conventional kid-friendly fun in the form of skate parks and ball pits.

city museum ball pit

city museum indoor cavern

Various other imported, salvaged and upcycled oddities can be found throughout, including a vault and safety deposit boxes from a Chicago bank. And the place is constantly changing, being reconfigured and hacked away at by the Cassilly Crew.

city museum slides

What started inside of a derelict structure in the late 1990s has burst from the walls of the building, featuring an array of exterior ‘exhibits’ as well. Visitors can climb ramps, bridges and tunnels to access a high-hanging plane and other repurposed spaces. Up on the roof sits a small Ferris Wheel while a bus hangs over the edge of the building (and of course: people are welcome to climb inside).

city museum roof bus

city museum ferris wheel

The owners boast that they are “always building,” and Gallery Hip summarizes the strange paradoxes of this ever-changing place: “popular among residents and tourists, the museum bills itself as an ‘eclectic mixture of children’s playground, funhouse, surrealistic pavilion, and architectural marvel.’ Visitors are encouraged to feel, touch, climb on, and play in the various exhibits.” Or, as Colossal describes it: “hundreds of feet of tunnels that traverse from floor to floor, an aquarium, ball pits, a shoe lace factory, a circus arts facility, restaurants, and even a bar… because why not?”

city museum bridge system

city museum tower plane

Faced with this amazing place, one is left to wonder: would such an unusual endeavor be approved of were it being started from scratch today, or would safety-minded citizens suck the fun out before it got started? Like Adventure Playgrounds, also more popular in an era now past, it is hard to imagine this kind of project getting off the ground, but thankfully there is a precedent: it is hard to argue with the success of the City Museum.

Gone Fur Good: 10 Abandoned Petting Zoos & Game Parks

16 Aug

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned-petting-zoo-1a
Generations of adults cherish childhood memories of these now-abandoned petting zoos. As for the animals fed & petted there, maybe they remember, too…

abandoned-petting-zoo-1c

White Pines Deer Park near Oregon, Illinois is remembered fondly by several generations of kids who enjoyed feeding the 200-odd deer kept in a spacious enclosure. “It’s excellent,” stated 8-year-old T.J. Turner in the summer of 1992. “Deer come right up to you. Outside you never get to pet them or see them.” Inside too, nowadays.

abandoned-petting-zoo-1b

abandoned-petting-zoo-1d

Flickr user BillsExplorations visited what remains of White Pines Deer Park in February of 2013, about two decades after the park closed in the mid-1990’s. Though it adjoins White Pines Forest State Park (an Illinois Nature Preserve since 2001), Bill didn’t see any deer roaming about – blame it on carelessly disposed-of Polaroid film waste.

Gotta Flat

abandoned-petting-zoo-2

Flickr user Quinn Dombrowski (quinn.anya) brings us this curious “Flat Petting Zoo”… says they sell furs there. Better not tell PETA or Elaine Benes.

Benson’s Hedges

abandoned-petting-zoo-3b

abandoned-petting-zoo-3d

Benson’s Wild Animal Farm in Hudson, New Hampshire, opened in 1926 and closed in 1987 following a decades-long decline. In 2009, the town of Hudson acquired the property and it’s gradually being redeveloped as a public park and nature area sans petting zoo.

abandoned-petting-zoo-3a

abandoned-petting-zoo-3c

Some of the much-deteriorated old buildings including the Old Lady in the Shoe’s house are to be restored though non-native plants, animals and animal-petters are no longer welcome.

Commuter Glitch: 15 Abandoned Bus Stops & Shelters

09 Aug

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned-bus-stop-1a
Bus routes often change so why are so many bus stops built to last? These 15 abandoned bus stops are prime examples of non-transient transit infrastructure.

abandoned-bus-stop-1b

abandoned-bus-stop-1c

Wow, Topeka has really let itself go… well, some parts at least. Flickr user Mike Linksvayer (mlinksva) captured the sorry state of this brazenly neglected and obviously abandoned Kansas Avenue bus stop on November 26th, 2014.

“Feed Me, Seymour!”

abandoned-bus-stop-12

Flickr user Laszlo Ujvari snapped this naturally camouflaged abandoned bus stop on February 24th, 2013. No wonder it was abandoned: who the heck could find it? How long did it take for Mother Nature to consume this unnamed bus stop… and is there a similarly smothered bus filled with skeletons stranded nearby?

Raus-ted

abandoned-bus-stop-2

The former East Germany is awash in abandoned infrastructure and, it would seem, unwelcome bus-riding Nazis. Flickr user Jim Cooper (stilo95hp) photo-documented this abandoned bus stop and complementary busted street lamp in Hoyerswerda, a gritty industrial town near the Polish border infamous for spates of anti-immigrant violence.

Bulgarity

abandoned-bus-stop-3a

abandoned-bus-stop-3b

So how’s that capitalism thing working out for you, post-communist Eastern Europe? Flickr user Tony G. (trghpu 1994) caught this abandoned Bulgarian bus stop/station on January 18th of 2013. Why is it abandoned? Well, most Bulgarians drive Bentley’s and Rolls Royce’s nowadays, dontcha know, making bus travel virtually obsolete. Yeah, that’s the (bus) ticket!

The Best Laid Plans…

abandoned-bus-stop-14

Shrubbery waiting for a bus? According to Flickr user Shawn Watson (gator_macready), this verdantly overgrown and rather large bus stop was abandoned shortly after it was built – never once did any buses stop there! Supposedly the bus stop was built in anticipation of an industrial district that never moved beyond the planning stage. Nice job of planning there, North Queensferry (Scotland) urban planners!

Putt Hurt: 12 More Abandoned Miniature Golf Courses

03 Aug

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned-miniature-golf-course-1a
Most miniature golf courses have 9 or 18 holes per course. These dozen abandoned courses, on the other hand, have more holes than Blackburn, Lancashire.

abandoned-miniature-golf-course-1b

abandoned-miniature-golf-course-1c

abandoned-miniature-golf-course-1d

Flickr user Tom Faulkner (tom faulkner photographs) has apparently done the impossible by turning an abandoned miniature golf course into an oasis of breathtaking beauty. The course is located somewhere in Maryland and though the artificial greens and fairways still reflect hints of their former verdant glory, the true glory of Faulkner’s images comes courtesy of Mother Nature in all her autumnal glory.

Pasture-ized

abandoned-miniature-golf-course-2a

It’s so annoying when a perfectly good miniature golf course closes its doors and drifts into deterioration and decay. In fact, one might say it really… gets our goat. Kudos to Flickr user Isaac Sachs, who snapped the currently “now serving as a goat pasture” status of the former Scappoose Mini Golf in September of 2013.

Eurotrashed

abandoned-miniature-golf-course-3b

Flickr user bertolino captured this baaadly overgrown and abandoned miniature golf course on May 2nd of 2009… hey, don’t they have goats in Europe?

Not Milwaukee’s Finest

abandoned-miniature-golf-course-4

abandoned-miniature-golf-course-4b

Dead Kennedys; D K; decay… coincidence? We think not! Flickr user Retinal Fetish brings us these post-apocalyptic images taken in 2006 and 2007 at Willow’s Miniature Golf in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The graffiti’d divider wall looks a little like swiss cheese – gray and moldy swiss cheese but hey, beggers can’t be choosers. Hopefully it won’t attract giant rats.
