Gruel Britannia: 10 Abandoned Little Chef Restaurants

17 Aug

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

Serving up American style with British flavor, hundreds of Little Chef roadside restaurants once warmed up the UK‘s motorways but less than 80 remain today.

“Once a familiar site by the roadside for greasy grub and indifferent service!,” according to Flickr user mad jeff, Little Chef was to the British Isles what Howard Johnson’s was to the USA – less the hotel rooms, swimming pools and fried clams. Founded in 1958 by Sam Alper, an entrepreneur admittedly influenced by America’s diners in the golden age of postwar road travel, Little Chef ballooned to 439 locations by the turn of the century… and you know what happens to balloons. The store above, located off the A1 motorway near Wansford, was one of the first Little Chef locations and stands (barely) today as a symbol of the once-robust chain’s astonishing slide into dereliction.

Kent Found On Roadside Dead

According to the brazenly optimistic Little Chef website, “we’ve grown to become one of the UK’s favourite roadside restaurants with 78 Little Chef restaurants from Scotland down to Cornwall.” 78 and counting… downward. Most pundits blame Little Chef’s inexorable death spiral on inconsistent ownership looking only to squeeze a few more pounds sterling out of the business before flipping it; a scenario that’s played out a jaw-dropping SEVEN times since the mid-1970s. The dreary images of an abandoned Little Chef located just off the A14 in Kentford, eastern England, come to us courtesy of Nosher.net who states, “discarded cassette tapes litter the area”. Nice.

Here’s a rather rough-looking abandoned Little Chef situated by the A46 Coventry by-pass near Binley Woods in Warwickshire. This store was one of a group of restaurants closed following the sale of the Little Chef chain to RCapital, a UK private equity group, in January of 2007. Kudos to Geograph member David Lally for documenting the state of the store in July of 2007 – one can only imagine what it looks like now assuming it hasn’t been bulldozed.

These evocative images of an abandoned Little Chef somewhere in Suffolk, eastern England were taken by Flickr user will2988 in May and June of 2013. Though originally modeled after classic diners and burger stands over the pond, Little Chef made efforts to appeal to the unique taste of domestic travelers with all-day breakfasts and traditional British fare such as bangers & beans with chips (fried potatoes) and even Ox Cheeks. Sorry, no Spam Eggs Sausage & Spam.

Meltdown: 10 Semi-Sweet Abandoned Chocolate Factories

03 Aug

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

Abandoned Hershey Chocolate Factory smokestacks cocoa bushes
Chocolate factories were once fragrant masters of their delicious domains but many have fallen victim to high costs, cocoa shortages and changing market tastes.

abandoned Hershey chocolate factory Pennsylvania demolition

Hershey, Pennsylvania, is known as “The Sweetest Place on Earth” though residents can’t be blamed for feeling a bit bitter: the historic Hershey Chocolate Factory closed in 2010 after operating for 105 years. Much of the former factory on East Chocolate Avenue was demolished over the past two years though Hershey is legally bound to preserve the iconic twin smokestacks and “cocoa bushes” regardless of future developments.

Sebastian Liste Urban Quilombo abandoned chocolate factory Brazil

In 2009 photographer Sebastian Liste embarked upon Urban Quilombo, a photo-documentary odyssey that opened a window into the lives of dozens of families who occupied Galpao da Araujo Barreto, an abandoned chocolate factory in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. Creating a community to shield themselves from the violent crime surrounding them, residents of the old chocolate factory managed to scratch out an existence suffused by sorrow shot through with flashes of joy.

In March of 2011, Brazilian government authorities evicted the families from the factory as part of their effort to “cleanse” cities scheduled to host events of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The families who formerly occupied the abandoned chocolate factory were resettled in a new neighborhood, “Jardim das Margaridas”, where Liste continue to document their lives.

Elizabeth Shaw has really let herself go. The Elizabeth Shaw chocolate factory in Bristol, UK, opened in 1881 and closed in late 2006 ostensibly due to its machinery needing a massive updating the company simply could not afford. It would seem the entire complex – both manufacturing and administrative – was abandoned with very little salvaging of anything valuable. Kudos to urban explorer Nero21 for risking life and limb to snap a few photos of the factory interior, where trays of moldy chocolate fill the stagnant air with a pungent aroma of sadness and decay.

Cadburied

This former Cadbury chocolate factory in Adelaide, Australia seems to have been abandoned for quite some time. How can you tell? Well, signage faded by the fierce and unrelenting Outback sun offers one clue while the stowed 1959 Ford delivery (or “despatch”) wagon parked inside offers another. Full props to Weekend Notes for the evocative images above.

No Sweat: 10 Abandoned Gyms & Deserted Fitness Centers

abandoned gyms & fitness centers

Gotta be at the gym in 26 minutes? Don’t get bent outta shape but no amount of blood, sweat or tears can rejuvenate these abandoned gyms & fitness centers.

abandoned European Health Spa Westchester New York

The long-abandoned European Health Spa in Westchester, New York has seen better days but on the bright side, the statuesque Atlas out front must enjoy having the weight of the world lifted off his shoulders. One wonders, though, who would – or COULD – make off with a massive metal globe? Obviously the gym worked miracles for someone before it shut its doors for good. A tip of the hat to Urban Landscaped for capturing the images above on a crisp, frosty day in December of 2010.

Aww, Phuket

abandoned Chalong Gym Phuket Thailand

When its American owner abandoned the Chalong Gym on Chao Fa East Road in Phuket, Thailand, members with pre-paid memberships likely cursed up a storm. Luckily for those eager to keep their bronzed bods buff for the beach, the gym re-opened under new management in July of 2009. All of this isn’t especially noteworthy but hey… check out the ridiculous amount of overhead wiring in the image above!

Ultimate FAIL

Ultimate Fitness, formerly located at 1603 Broad River Road in Columbia, SC, advertised “24 HOUR ACCESS TO OUR FACILITY”. Sounds legit. According to Columbia Closings, “This 24 hour gym was in Boozer Shopping Center on the Bush River Road side just a few slots down from Dunkin’ Robbins.” Yeah, they never stood a chance.

Florian from Abandoned Kansai must have worked up one heck of a sweat exploring the abandoned Asahi Sports Center in the depths of an oppressively humid (aka typical) Japanese summer. No doubt the complex’s putrid green outdoor pool provided billions of mosquitoes – not to mention the odd, possibly rabid bat – that made his task that much more miserable. The things urban (and rural, in this case) explorers go through to make your net browsing experience so enjoyable!

Abandoned Alien Homestead: Forsaken UFO House in Florida

14 Jul

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

UFOhouse_mainx

Painted pink and encrusted with graffiti, the abandoned UFO house in Homestead, Florida, has a backstory as mysterious as its otherworldly architecture.

Lions & Tigers & Bears, Oh My!

abandoned Florida UFO house

abandoned Florida UFO house

Located in Homestead, Florida, the so-called “UFO House” (or “Alien House”) was built around 1974 when the town’s population was roughly 15,000. Forty years later, Homestead is home to just over 60,000 yet the UFO House, situated at 37350 Southwest 214th Avenue, is still remarkably isolated… as if the original owner wasn’t interested in having neighbors, EVAR. Credit Abandoned Florida for many of these crisp, clear & creepy images.

Lessee now, why would someone of obvious financial means in ’70s south Florida take steps to ensure exclusivity above and beyond the call? One doesn’t have to consult Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs to arrive at a plausible explanation and a decades-long rumor mill has helped fill in the gaps. The prevailing theory goes something like this: the original builder-owner was allegedly involved in drug trafficking using the front of being an exotic animal importer. The contraband was supposedly hidden in compartments built into the floors of the animal cages. Say hello to my leetle friend, Tony Montana the Tiger!

“My friend lived down a dirt road from this place,” relates someone who visited the UFO House around 1979. “It was out in the middle of agriculture fields off of Palm Drive as I remember. We used to ride her dirt bike down there to look at these exotic animals that were caged in back of the house, mostly big cats like tigers and jaguars. We had heard the rumors about it being a drug smuggler using the animals as a cover and one day when we went around the outside of the property a man came out of the house, jumped into a car (old Monte Carlo?) and chased us through the fields. We were terrified and he wouldn’t let up until he caught up with us (we were just 2 twelve year old girls tearing along these dirt roads on a tiny dirt bike). He finally caught us and told us not to ever go back there.” Thanks to Flickr user KACP (Kris Alan Carter Photography) for the above images.

Metro Koi: Thousands of Fish Occupy Abandoned Bangkok Mall

02 Jul

[ By WebUrbanist in Travel & Urban Exploration. ]

fish mall floor views

Built, closed, partially demolished, boarded up and ultimately deserted, the New World Mall in the capital city of Thailand has become home a strange and unexpected attraction.

fish mall vertical shot

Abandoned nearly two decades ago after violating building codes, the roof of the structure collapsed in a subsequent fire, leading the building to be partially filled with rainwater.

metro colorful wild fish

metro koi closeup picture

Standing pools throughout the place gave rise to a serious mosquito infestation, which the locals sought to combat by introducing fish that, in turn, bred, spread and inhabited the ruins.

fish mall front facade

fish mall outside vendors entrance

Since then, the mall has turned into a kind of alternative tourist destination where visitors flock to feed the fish, now occupying over 5,000 square feet of space originally intended for retail. Vendors have even sprung up in the area to sell scraps of food – throwing anything else into the standing water is strictly forbidden. More images of the building and its context can be found here.

RenegadeTravels explains how to get to this centrally-located abandonment: “The mall is only around 5 minutes’ walk from Khao San Road. Walk to the end of Khao San Road where the small glass police station is and turn right onto Chakrabongse Road. Then walk straight ahead until you come to the junction with Phra Sumen Road. This intersection is known as Bang Lam Pu Junction. You will see the main entrance to New World Mall here, but you can’t get in from the front.”

No Clowning Around: 11 Sad Abandoned Circuses & Carnivals

The crowds have dispersed, the animal cages are empty and the striped Big Top is eerily silent… there’s no clowning around when the circus leaves town.

Moldering Away In Moldova

abandoned circus Chisenau Moldova

Say what you want about Soviet-era architecture but it wasn’t ALL atrocious, and this deserted circus arena in Chisinau, Moldova, still exudes a certain appeal a full ten years after it was abandoned. Constructed in 1981 and captured in its current state by Abandoned Journeys, the grandiose edifice straddles the last years of the USSR and the first years of Moldova, which gained its independence in 1991.

abandoned circus Chisenau Moldova

abandoned circus Chisenau Moldova

Freedom isn’t always free, however, and tough economic times in Moldova saw the circus shuttered in 2004. Nowadays it could pass for the decrepit, monumental, stair-terraced building that sheltered the childlike Eloi in the 1960 film The Time Machine.

Circus Minimus

abandoned circus La Linea Spain Gibraltar

Is it a circus, a cinema, a car park or a staging area for Gypsy caravans? Well, the owners are absent and the Gypsies aren’t talking so your guess is as good as ours. One thing we DO know is the location: La Linea, just across the border from Gibraltar in southern Spain, thanks to An Overland Adventure.

Worst Korea

abandoned circus Jeju Korea

abandoned circus Jeju Korea

Jeju, South Korea’s southernmost island province, recently made the news as the destination of the ill-fated MV Sewol ferry that sank with the tragic loss of hundreds of students in April of 2014. Jeju is less known as the site of an immense abandoned circus. Obviously deserted for more than a few years yet easily accessible to urban explorers including Great Big Scary World, the source of the above images and more, the circus must have been a popular tourist attraction in its heyday.

Wintercircus Of Our Discontent

abandoned Wintercircus belgium

The Wintercircus, located in Ghent, Belgium, was originally built in 1894. Devastated by fire in 1920, it was rebuilt and expanded three years later – the now Nouveau Cirque could hold up to 3,400 people! After the final circus performance in 1944, the building was used as a garage for the Mahy family’s extensive collection of classic automobiles until it once again closed – this time for good – in the late 1990s. Kudos to Archikey and photographer David for the exquisite image above.

Handmade Car Explores the Abandoned Railroads of Mexico

24 Jun

[ By Steph in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

Custom Railroad Exploration Car 1

Over 5500 miles of abandoned railways stretching from one end of Mexico to the other enticed two brothers to build an incredible retro-futuristic exploratory car. The SEFT-1 is modeled after a midcentury vision of a spaceship with an all-metal exterior and faceted windshield, and it’s equipped with modern sensors and navigation tools as well as wheels that can ride on rails.

Custom Railroad Exploration Car 2

The railroads of Mexico were abandoned in 1995 due to flagging profits, and have been left to decay ever since. Ivan Puig and Andrés Padilla Domene, both artists, wanted a novel way to experience these nearly-forgotten transportation corridors.

Custom Railroad Exploration Car 3

Custom Railroad Exploration Car 4

The SEFT-1 can drive on roads like an ordinary car, or use its extra set of front wheels to guide it along the rails. SEFT-1 stands for Sonda de Exploracion Ferroviaria Tripulada, which translates as Manned Railway Exploration Probe.

Custom Railroad Exploration Car 5

From 2010 to 2012, the brothers took the SEFT-1 on a journey that took them all the way to Ecuador, gathering data, videos, photos, objects and stories that tell the tale of what has happened to all those miles of tracks after their official use came to an end. Those findings are currently on display at London’s Furtherfield Gallery.

Zero Mileage: 12 Abandoned Automobile Dealerships

23 Jun

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned Le Baron convertible Chicago car dealership

The showroom floors are bare and the alluring aroma of new car smell has long since dissipated from these dozen down-in-the-dumps abandoned auto dealerships.

Aloha & Mahalo

abandoned car dealer Hawaii

“I say hello you say goodbye,” to quote The Beatles, also suits this lonely and abandoned car dealership somewhere in Hawaii. That’s because “aloha” means both hello or goodbye in Hawaiian, depending on the context in which it’s used. In the context of the image above, we’re guessing it means goodbye.

Signs Of The Times

abandoned Valley Dodge dealership 2012

abandoned Valley Dodge dealership

The former Valley Dodge on Route 202 in Wellsville, Connecticut, was one of many automobile dealerships victimized by the Great Financial Crisis of 2008. The telling pair of images above succinctly document the decay of the abandoned dealership in just two frames. Kudos to Flickr users Greg (63vwdriver) and MJBarnes for posting the images taken on December 11th of 2012 and March 9th of 2013, respectively.

Not Your Father’s Olds Dealership

abandoned Oldsmobile dealership Beulah North Dakota

Beulah, North Dakota’s motto is “Small Town Appeal… Big City Looks” and the tiny (pop. 3,304 in 2013) town’s former Oldsmobile dealership certainly looks like a big-city operation. Unfortunately for Beulah, neither its appeal nor its looks were enough to keep the local Olds store afloat when GM pulled the plug on the brand back in 2004. These days, the dealership quietly deteriorates through bone-chilling prairie winters and pleasant, Simpsons-sky days like the one above, perfectly captured by The Daily Rant.

Le Barren

abandoned LeBaron convertible Chicago car dealership

abandoned Le Baron convertible Chicago car dealership

Call it a modern mystery: a mid-eighties Chrysler LeBaron convertible sits in solitary splendor (not counting the flat tires) amidst the gathering dust and empty soda cans inside an abandoned suburban Chicago auto dealership. That was in 2010… two years later, the author of the above photos returned to the row of deserted dealerships to find the lonely LeBaron still in place, tires slightly flatter, unmolested by all but the inexorable passage of time. We have to assume K-cars are even more unpopular now than they were then.

Bucket List: 12 Battered & Abandoned KFC Stores

16 Jun

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned KFC
There are nearly 20,000 KFCs worldwide but success isn’t guaranteed. Here are 12 that kicked the bucket when the financial chickens came home to roost.

The Bucket Stops Here

abandoned KFC bucket sign(images via: OldOhioSchools and The Morning News/Brian Ulrich)

No one symbol captures the essence of KFC like the spinning bucket sign, and likewise a discarded and decrepit bucket sign perfectly illustrates the downfall of a fast food fried chicken icon. The bucket above, which looks supernaturally spooky by night, merely appears sad when spied by day in a line of other such signs. You’ll find it outside the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Slippery Slope

abandoned KFC Park Slope Brooklyn NYC(image via: Here’s Park Slope)

According to its Wikipedia entry, “Park Slope is an affluent neighborhood in northwest Brooklyn, New York City.” Looks like this affluent area just caught a case of affluenza, however, with graffiti taggers moving quickly to blight the abandoned KFC outlet at the corner of 4th Avenue and Warren. Conveniently, the closed store posts an official sign directing curious (and hungry) taggers to their next nearest location.

Double-Down For The Count

abandoned KFC Hayes VA(images via: RetailByRyan95)

Is Flickr user RetailByRyan95 psychic or something? The intrepid photojournalist must have had a premonition when he visited a now-abandoned KFC restaurant in Hayes, VA in April of 2009. Just over three years later, Ryan was back to record the forlorn state of the abandoned outlet at 2413 George Washington Memorial Highway in the York River Crossing shopping center. Hope he packed a lunch on his return visit. According to Ryan, this KFC closed on October 21st of 2011 and the entire building was demolished in early November of 2013.

Chicken Rundown

abandoned KFC bucket Youngwood PA(image via: paper or plastic)

Somehow this old-style KFC big bucket escaped the fate of its store on Route 30 by the Westmoreland Mall and ended up outside the Antique Co-op store over on Rt. 119, according to Flickr user paper or plastic. KFC chicken buckets can run but they can’t hide, however, and after spending some time in this incongruous location it was hit by a car and completely destroyed. Police are seeking an elderly man dressed in a white suit and black string-tie, last seen licking his fingers and cackling gleefully.

Agony & Ivory: 12 Not So Grand Abandoned Pianos

08 Jun

[ By Steve in Art & Street Art & Graffiti. ]

abandoned pianos
88 keys and nothin’ on… except dust, dirt & decay. These 12 abandoned pianos may irk music lovers but cheer those who live life slightly out of tune.

New York Minuet

abandoned piano East River(image via: James and Karla Murray Photography)

OK, so abandoning pianos is a thing now. Take the East River Piano, a now-silent Mason & Hamlin found wallowing (when the tide’s in) and waterlogged on the Manhattan side of the river, under the Brooklyn Bridge. It couldn’t have been easy to lug the 300-lb behemoth down to the riverside but someone (probably with a little help) did just that sometime towards the end of May, 2014.

abandoned piano East River NYC(images via: Canoe.ca/REUTERS/Carlo Allegri)

Photographer Carlos Chiossone told NBC 4 New York he was out for a walk and noticed a photo shoot taking place on and around the piano. “But then they left,” said Chiossone, “and the piano is still there.” Who will remove the #EastRiverPiano and when? The City Parks Department issued a short statement saying the beach is not under their jurisdiction, or in the words of the late Freddy Prinze, “It’s not my job, man.”

Piano Tree Oh

abandoned piano tree Mifflin(image via: WeirdWood)

Artist Jeff Mifflin’s Piano Tree was a so-called “living installation” set in a forested area just off the Disc Golf Course at California State University in Monterey Bay. Mifflin took an old stage piano and after some judicious sawing, made it appear an ancient tree was growing out of the old upright’s heart. The tree continued to grow even after it was unnaturally mated, however, and would be evolving today if a drunken music-hater had not taken his frustrations out on the artwork.

Leaves Behind

abandoned piano leaves(images via: Zariat)

“I encountered an abandoned piano yesterday,” states blogger and photographer Zariat, and “I was charmed by the elegance it maintained while slowly decaying beneath the fallen leaves.” That’s the thing about abandoned pianos: while definitely fish out of water, they seem to maintain a certain degree of dignity regardless of how pitiable and perilous their situation.

Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player

Russian soldier abandoned piano Chechnya(image via: Reddit/red321red321/Imgur)

Why was this Russian soldier playing an abandoned piano? Because it was there! And by “there” we mean Chechnya, sometime in 1994 shortly after the advent of the First Chechen War. It’s not known if the piano was ticking when the soldier began tickling the ivories, nor if the instrument was rigged to explode should the player hit a bum note.
