Fast and steady: Tamron 85mm F1.8 Di VC USD real-world samples

19 May

The Tamron 85mm F1.8 claims the title of the world’s first fast-aperture 85mm lens with stabilization. The focal length will certainly appeal to portrait photographers, and the combination of Tamron’s vibration compensation with an F1.8 aperture might just give it an edge in low light situations. We’ve been shooting with it over the past couple of weeks, both on full-frame and crop sensor bodies, to get an idea of its performance.

New arrival: Tamron SP 85mm F1.8 launches later this week

23 Mar

Tamron has announced pricing and availability for its recently released SP 85mm F1.8 Di VC USD. According to the company, the lens will launch this Thursday, March 24 in Canon and Nikon mounts for $ 749. Tamron also plans to launch a Sony mount lens later this year, but has not provided a launch date at this time.

The 85mm F1.8 lens features an Ultrasonic Silent Drive and full-time manual focus override, and produces, among other things, a ‘balanced bokeh’ for emphasizing a photo’s foreground subject. The SP 85mm model uses both low dispersion and ultra low dispersion glass elements to produce sharp and clear high-fidelity color photos with minimal color fringing, while eBAND and BBAR lens coating technologies reduce ghosting and lens flares to what Tamron says is ‘imperceptible levels.’

Other features include a moisture-resistant body, a water and oil-repellant fluorine coating on the front element and support for the Tamron TAP-in Console. Notably, the Nikon mount version features the electromagnetic diaphragm system that has been a Canon mount standard feature.

Seriously sharp: Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM samples

11 Mar

We knew Sony’s FE 85mm F1.4 G Master lens was sharp. After all, we had the chance to shoot with it briefly back in February at the Sony a6300 launch event in New York City. But last week we got better acquainted with the lens, putting it through its paces in different shooting scenarios throughout Miami. And simply put, this lens is seriously sharp. All of the samples in the gallery were shot using the Sony a7R II. Please note, we’ve included Raw files for download for a selection of the images.

Note: This sample gallery was shot while on a Sony-sponsored shooting event in Miami. Part of the excursion included photographing models in scenes that call back to famous Miami-based TV shows and movies including Scarface, Miami Vice and CSI Miami. No actual gangsters or cops were photographed during the making of this gallery.

Alexander May10

A look at the Lomography Petzval 85mm F2.2 lens

02 Jul

Lomography isn’t a company we’ve historically talked about much on DPReview; with its emphasis on low-fi, ‘shoot from the hip’ photography using plastic film cameras, it’s a long way from the typical interests of our readers. But last year the company came up with an interesting idea: to recreate a classic 19th century portrait lens for modern SLRs. The result is the Petzval 85mm F2.2, which is available now to fit Canon or Nikon SLRs. So what’s it like?

Lomography has announced that its Kickstarter-funded Petzval portrait lens is now available for pre-order in Canon and Nikon mounts. Based on a 19th century optical design, the 85mm F2.2 lens has a brass lens barrel, a ‘gear rack’ manual focusing mechanism using a knob on the side of the barrel, and a set of drop-in ‘Waterhouse stops’ to change the aperture. The pre-order package costs $ 599 from Lomography’s website, with a current delivery estimate of May 2014.
