  • Panasonic firmware debugs GH4, improves stabilization on 42.5mm and 30mm lenses

    Panasonic has released new firmware for the Lumix DMC-GH4 camera, its 42.5mm f/1.2 portrait lens and the 30mm f/2.8 macro. The firmware was introduced the same day as the V2.0 for the Lumix DC-GH5, but was rather over-shadowed by the bigger news (for obvious reasons). That doesn’t mean it’s not worth mentioning though.

    On the camera side, the update for the GH4 fixes an issue that prevented image stabilization from functioning with some third party lenses when working in the variable frame rate video mode.

    For the lenses, the update brings Dual IS 2 to both the (H-HS030) Lumix G Macro 30mm f/2.8 ASPH Mega OIS and (H-NS043) Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 ASPH Power IOS lenses, with individual updates for each of the models.

    The version 2 of the stabilization system that combines in-camera sensor movement with in-lens anti-shake units is said to provide better performance for stills shooters as well as stabilization in movie mode and 4K/6K Photo modes via a new gyro system in Dual IS 2 compatible bodies. At the moment only the DC-GH5 and G80/G85 support the system, which differs from the Dual IS modes used in the GX8 and GX80/85.

  • Panasonic introduces Lumix G 30mm macro and new 42.5mm portrait prime

    Panasonic has announced two new additions to its Micro Four Thirds lens lineup, a 30mm F2.8 macro and 42.5mm F1.7 portrait lens. The company had previously hinted that the 30mm was in the works, and as promised it offers Mega O.I.S stabilization along with 240 fps drive AF. The 42.5mm F1.7 isn’t quite as fast (or presumably as expensive) as the existing Leica Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2. Both lenses will be available in May. Read more

  • Budget Mitakon 42.5mm f/1.2 offered by ZY optics for M43, Sony E and Fuji X systems

    Chinese lens designer and manufacturer Shenyang ZhongYi Optical and Electrical Company has launched a new 42.5mm f/1.2 lens that is capable of covering an APS-C imaging sensor. Priced $ 359, and available initially in the Micro Four Thirds mount, the Mitakon 42.5mm f/1.2 appears to be aimed squarely at competing with Panasonic’s Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 for its Lumix G bodies. Read more

    CES 2014: We got our hands on the recently announced Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2 ASPH OIS at the CES trade show in Las Vegas. It’s an ultra-fast portrait prime for Micro Four Thirds that offers an 85mm equivalent field of view. We shot some quick samples mounted on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3, including an aperture progression series. We’ve just added 16 more images to our previously-published gallery, taken with the new lens attached to an Olympus OM-D E-M5. See gallery

  • Panasonic formally launches Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2 ASPH

    CES 2014: Panasonic has formally announced the Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2 ASPH fast portrait prime for Micro Four Thirds. The lens, first revealed in prototype form back at the Photokina trade show in September 2012, offers an 85mm equivalent field of view and the brightest aperture of any autofocus lens on the system. As with the announcement in August 2013, no details of price or availability have been given.

  • Panasonic announces Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2 (again)

    Alongside the enthusiast-oriented DMC-GX7, Panasonic has announced the Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2 – the fastest autofocus lens ever created for the Micro Four Thirds system. If you’re getting a sense of deja vu that’s because Panasonic actually announced this lens already (sort of) at last year’s Photokina tradeshow in Cologne, Germany. But what was then a dummy lens behind glass now appears to be a real product, albeit one without any firm availability date or pricing information.

  • Cosina says Voigtländer Nokton 42.5mm F0.95 will be available in August

    Cosina has announced that its Voigtländer Nokton 42.5mm F0.95 will be available in August, and will be priced at ¥123,900 in Japan. This ultra-fast short telephoto ‘portrait’ lens is for Micro Four Thirds cameras only, and will offer similar photographic characteristics to an 85mm F1.9 lens on full frame in terms of angle of view, depth of field control, and background blur. It has a 10-bladed diaphragm, and features manual focus and aperture operation – the latter can be made clickless for movie recording.
