  • Tour Tiny Worlds: 6-Camera Cube Creates 360-Degree Video

    The ultimate at-home hacker project, this strange small-world effect was created using a half-dozen GoPro cameras, a 3D printer and a technique that turns ordinary panoramic shots into a surreal world-warping wraparound experience.

    German photographer, journalist and inventor Jonas Ginter cobbled together his cubic ball of cameras then mounted this oddball creation above his bike, all to generate the effect you see in the video above. Given the accessibility of the constituent technologies (and his helpful instructions), suddenly the idea of 3D video capture is within reach of any enthusiastic hobbyist.

    The stereographic distortion, while a neat effect, is also helpful in rendering a three-dimensional view into a two-dimensional frame. As for the idea, here is a bit more from the creator (summary translation to follow): “Ich habe mir seltsame Konstruktionen mit Spiegeln angeguckt und frustriert festgestellt, dass das absoluter Quatsch ist. Stück für Stück kam die Erkenntnis, dass ich 360-Grad-Videos nur realisieren kann, wenn ich das Bild in einem Take aufnehme. Die logische Konsequenz hieß also: Viele Kameras.”

    Above, Ginter explains his slow realization that to realize a 360-degree video he would have to do everything in a single take, which in turn means having multiple cameras.  While his takes so far are interesting in themselves, the possibilities are amazing – but consider just the fun consumer applications, like capturing a three-hundred-and-sixty-degree skydive or mounting this on the car roof for a road trip.   • Ricoh unveils 360-degree, smartphone-controlled Theta camera

    Ricoh has unveiled their new Theta digital camera, which can take 360-degree panoramas with its two ultra-wide-angle lenses. The stylish and thin Theta can be controlled via your iOS device after you’ve downloaded the appropriate app. There’s no live preview of the photo you’re about to take, so you have to cross your fingers and hope for the best.   • Full 360-degree camera rig takes your 3D portrait with 60 DSLRs

    Printing in 3D is in the news a lot lately, but applications are usually limited to industrial prototypes. A company called Captured Dimensions has a different use for this technology. They’ve rigged 60 DSLRs in a 360-degree array to capture 3D portraits. The likeness is then printed using a substance containing gypsum powder, resulting in a 3D sculpture of 1/12 to 1/5 scale.     The instant replay isn’t new. In fact, it can be argued that it’s the very reason why watching Football is America’s favorite Sunday night living room pastime. The implementation of 12 cameras in each end zone brings something new to your big screen TV this NFL season – a 360-degree instant replay. Starting with the September 8th Dallas Cowboys home game, fans watching the action on NBC’s Sunday Night Football will see an all-around view of controversial plays in each end zone.

  • Photographer reveals massive 360-degree Tokyo panorama

    If you haven’t seen the 600,000 pixel, 360 degree Tokyo panorama that’s flying around the internet, clear your schedule for the next hour and take a look. It’s a work from photographer Jeffrey Martin, who previously documented London in a similar fashion. With a lot of storage and processing power, Martin captured the photo with a Canon 7D, 400mm F5.6L lens and a robotic assistant. Click through and check it out.

    Forget floors, get over familiar geometries and start really thinking in three dimensions if you want to understand this futuristic and multifaceted home concept. Levels are secondary – the focus is movement, interior experience and exterior interaction.

    Didier Faustino (images via By Encore) took to the Solo Houses challenge with an outside-in approach, but avoided the typical mistakes of many Postmodern shape-oriented architects who aim for appearance over function.

    Dubbed In the Center of the Infinite, the jagged form frames a residential experience of open space, light and views, with occupiable levels filling in around human needs.

    Outside, the object spikes out in all directions, clad in rusted steel and perforated by huge windows. Inside, the plan is wide open and floors bleed into walls, which in turn blend into ceilings. This effect is reinforced by a uniform use of plywood and similarly-colored materials throughout.

    About the Portugese designer: “Didier Fiuza Faustino works reciprocally summons up art from architecture and architecture from art. Spaces, buildings and objects show themselves to be platforms for the intersection of the individual body and the collective body in their use. Each project represents a concept that subverts the social context, in which seeing is experimenting beyond submission to the dichotomy of the rules that normally mark out public space and private space.”

  • Static Flip Books: 360-Degree Scenes in Panoramic Pages

    Like a flip book, there is no text, and each page of these volumes contains a slightly different scene. Except instead of paging through them rapidly to reveal the story, the ‘reader’ unfolds the entire book at once into a dynamic panorama.

    Artist Yusuke Oono has a whole series of these 360-degree books telling stories of daily home life, remote jungle adventures, and everything in between.

    Each one unfolds into a three-dimensional scene, created using CAD-derived designs and laser-cutting programs, completed with a splash of color.

    The resulting negative space allows viewers to see through pages and visualize scenes, assembling them from the two-dimensional information on each layer – like rotational cut-outs of some miniature reality (or slices of life, if you like).

    Ground, trees, walls and roofs provide the context – small figures of women, men and children tell silent stories that change with perspective and light. Each page is both a moment in space and in time. Brilliant, beautiful, simple.
