  • Blog Project: Your Best Photos From 2014

    Our planet has nearly completed its orbit around the Sun once again and if you’re a regular JMG-Galleries reader that means one thing…  it is time to kick off the 8th annual best photos of the year blog project. This is by far my most popular blog project. Year over year this project has continued to increase in participation with last years participation hitting 328 participants (see Best Photos of 2013,  2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007). Around this time of year people start to ask if I’d be running this project again. The answer clearly is always YES! 1. I love this project and I love that so many people get excited about it. 2. It’s a great way exercise to improve your photography (10 Ways to Top Your Best 20xx Photographs). So with out any further delay here is how you take part to submit your best photos of 2014.

    How to Participate (Read Carefully)

    1. Review & select your best photos from 2014.

      Note: Photo edit carefully narrowing down your results to your best 10 or 5 photos. Reference Pro Tips: Photo Editing with Gary Crabbe for pointers.
    2. Create a blog post on your web site or a Flickr/500px set containing your best photos from 2014.
    3. Complete the form below by Saturday JANUARY 3th at 11:59PM PST to take part. The following Tuesday I’ll post a link to all submitted sites and photos on my blog. Through out the week I’ll also share the results across all my social media accounts.

    Feel free to spread the word of this project on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, photo forums you frequent and/or your blogs. All who are interested in taking part are invited.

    1. 29 mal Zeitgeschehen

    Meist werden Best-Of-Listen ja nach formalen Kategorien editiert, beispielsweise „die besten Sportfotos des Jahres“ oder die Auswahl bezieht sich nur auf Seiten-interne Publikationen. Das TIME-Magazin hat dieses ungeschriebene Gesetz durchbrochen, eine zeitgemäße Fotocommunity herausgesucht und dort nach den bedeutendsten Fotos 2014 geforscht: Instagram. Herausgekommen ist eine großartige Strecke von 29 Aufnahmen, die das Weltgeschehen dokumentierten und somit ganz ohne Nachrichten-Magazin wichtige Ereignisse bekundeten. Vom Euromaidan über eine eritreische Hochzeit in Haifa bis hin zur Dokumentation einer Mutter, die mit ihrem Sohn am Grab ihres erstgeborenen Kindes sitzt, zeigt diese Serie auf, dass Berichterstattung über wichtiges Zeitgeschehen nicht zwingend an eine DSLR gebunden ist. → ansehen

    2. Drohnen-Fotografie teuer bestraft

    „Warum nicht mal mit einer Drohne fotografieren?“ Diesen Gedanken tragen sicherlich viele Fotobegeisterte mit sich herum und überlegen sich, das doch einfach mal auszuprobieren. Doch hierbei ist Vorsicht geboten, denn so ein Abenteuer kann flugs teuer werden, wie es einem Luftbildfotografen am Dienstag ergangen ist. Besucher eines Festes hatten sich beschwert, da die Drohne recht tief über sie hinweg flog. 1.500 € Strafe musste der Fotograf entlohnen, eine Aufstiegsgenehmigung ist hingegen für 150 € zu haben. Und die Moral von der Geschicht’? Mit Drohnen spaßen lohnt sich nicht. → ansehen

    3. Von der Liebe einer Mutter

    Der in Norddeutschland geborene Fred Hüning war bisher einer der unbekannteren Namen im Fotografie-Internet, doch nun hat seine Serie „Drei“ auf Huffington-Post für Furore gesorgt. Nein, es handelt sich mitnichten um super dramatische Fotos von explodierenden Autos, sondern um tief gehende und hochemotionale Dokumente aus dem innersten des Familienlebens: Der Mutter-Liebe zu ihrem Kind. Weit entfernt von beschönigendem Kitsch greift Hüning ebenfalls die Ambivalenz eines Vaters auf, der sich manchmal aus dem innersten Kreis von Mutter und Kind ausgeschlossen fühlt und drückt dieses Gefühl in diesen einzigartigen Portraits aus. → ansehen

    1. Vom Zaun um Europa

    Der Zaun beschäftigt sich mit der Situation von Tausenden Flüchtlingen an den Grenzen Europas. Die Seite bedient sich zahlreicher (auch: fotografischer) Elemente, um visuell und auditiv zu veranschaulichen, wie es denen geht, die versuchen, aus ihrem Land zu flüchten und sich dort eine bessere Zukunft erhoffen. Unter anderem wird auch Tunesien und die Stadt Sfax vorgestellt, von der aus viele Mütter Ihre Söhne zum letzten Mal sehen – und im Extremfall auch nie wieder von ihnen hören. Der Zaun entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit der Süddeutschen Zeitung und fordert Besucher heraus, sich tatsächlich in der Tiefe mit der Sache zu beschäftigen, da es sich inhaltlich nicht um reine Klickstrecken handelt. Drüberscrollen ist nicht, und das ist auch gut so. → ansehen

    2. UNICEF-Fotos des Jahres

    UNICEF prämiert jedes Jahr Fotos und Fotoreportagen, die die Persönlichkeit und Lebensumstände von Kindern weltweit auf herausragende Weise dokumentieren. Dieses Jahr gewannen die beiden deutschen Fotografen Insa Hagemann und Stefan Finger mit ihren Bildern, die von den Folgen des Sextourismus in den Philippinen und der Situation von Kindern ausländischer Väter erzählen. Ein Interview mit den beiden Fotografen hat Spiegel Online. Auch der zweite Platz geht an einen deutschen Fotografen. Christian Werner zeigt das Schicksal der Jesiden im Irak, die von der Islamistengruppe „Islamischer Staat“ verfolgt werden. Der südafrikanische Fotograf Brent Stirton gewinnt den dritten Platz mit seiner Reportage über die blinden Geschwister Anita und Sonia, die dank einer Operation wieder sehen können. → ansehen

    3. Analysiert: Fotobücher-Listen

    Das wird den Mathematikern Spaß machen: Jörg Colberg hat sich die im Netz sehr beliebte Foto-Buch-Linkliste von Photo-Eye vorgenommen (welche 177 verschiedene Bücher enthält), und anlässlich ihres Umfangs auf Ello ein paar Statistiken herausgearbeitet. Unter anderem konnte er feststellen, welcher Verlag die meisten Bücher in allen Listen hatte, wie viel Prozent ihr Buch im Eigenverlag publizierten und warum es äußerst schwer sein wird, mit einer Publikation überhaupt in eine dieser breitgefächerten Listen zu kommen. Also auch ein Tipp für Nicht-Mathematiker. → ansehen

    For the last 15 years, I have been purchasing and using the Photograph America Newsletter published by Robert Hitchman.  I got turned onto this publication when I visited Big Bend National Park with some fellow photographers.  His guide was a tremendous help getting us to the best spots.  Every time I took a trip to a National Park or other popular photographic location I would check the big binder of newsletters from Robert.     2014 was a good year for enthusiast photographers, and saw a range of extremely high-quality DSLRs and mirrorless cameras released from all of the major manufacturers. As well as iterative upgrades to existing cameras, we also saw brand new products from Fujifilm and Samsung, and 4K video made its first appearance in this product class.
