Sky Slide: L.A. Tower Adds Exterior Glass Chute 1,000 Feet Up

07 Mar

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Cities & Urbanism. ]

This undated artist's rendering provided by Overseas Union Enterprise Limited shows a glass slide 1,000 feet above the ground off the side of the U.S. Bank Tower in downtown Los Angeles. The 45-foot-long attraction is part of a $ 50 million renovation that will also put a bar and open-air observation deck on the top floors of the 72-story building. (Michael Ludvik/OUE Ltd. via AP)

A new amusement offering on the 70th floor of the highest skyscraper on the West Coast is stepping up the game, going beyond glass viewing platforms, swimming pools and bridges to boast a fully-transparent outdoor slide for bold adventurers, all at a lofty 1,000-foot elevation.

Owners of the U.S Bank Tower are adding this extreme sightseeing measure to thrill (or terrify) visitors who wish to simulate the experience of jumping out of a skyscraper. The 36-foot Skyslide will take guests from the 70th down to the 69th floor.

The so-called Skyslide is part of a new observation deck expansion that will charge $ 25 per ticket, or another $ 8 to ride the side of the scraper via a trap door.

Attached by minimal metal supports, the clear glass will give stunning views of the surrounding city, at least for those brave enough to keep their eyes open on the way down. Meanwhile, on the East Coast, visitors can experience a similar thrill in slightly less overtly-dangerous environs, touring 50 years of history in 1 WTC elevator ride.

Upgrading? Here are Some Good Cameras Under $1000

21 Nov

Thinking of upgrading to a newer camera but don’t want to spend a fortune?  Here are two videos that will give you some options for both DSLR and Mirrorless in the under $ 1000 USD price range.

Best Mirrorless Camera Under $ 1000

The one they recommend in the video about is the Fuji X-T10 which comes in at $ 999 with the 18-55mm kit lens.

Other Cameras Under $ 1000

The guys at Digital Rev TV do a humorous comparison between the Canon 700D (T5i) at $ 649 with the 18-55mm lens, and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM5 at $ 669 USD with the 12-32mm kit lens.

An alternative choice

Or you could take the approach in the video below (he’s talking about doing video but the same applies to sill photography). You could save your money, and work on your photography education instead. This is a great place to start right here on dPS – do a search for topics you’re interested in, invest in some ebooks or a video course.

1000 Fremde

12 Jun

What The Duck #1000

03 May

wtdlogo_big.jpg

We’ve come to the end of another week here at dpreview, and as our thoughts drift to weekend shooting opportunities, it’s time to take things a little less seriously. Aaron Johnson’s comic strip ‘What the Duck’ is just the thing, taking a gently satirical look through the lens of a photographically inclined waterfowl. You can find it published here (and in our newsletter) every week; we hope you enjoy it, and your weekend.

Filming fire has come a long way since the 1991 movie Backdraft. Emerging Director Brendan Bellomo and DP Greg Wilson shot a slow motion short using the Phantom Flex4K camera, which shoots 1,000 FPS at full 4K resolution. The results are riveting. See video

DPReview Recommends: Interchangeable Lens Cameras for Under $1000

05 Dec

under1000.jpg

A few years ago, the idea of a DSLR under $ 1000 was just a distant dream, but these days the financial bar to entry is much lower than it was in the past. And DSLRs aren’t the only game in town anymore either – mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras are maturing quickly, and there are plenty of affordable options on the market. Here’s our list of the top five interchangeable lens cameras that we’d currently recommend for under $ 1000 – including a kit zoom lens.

Details & Diagrams: $1,000 IKEA Flat-Pack Refugee Shelter

28 Oct

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

ikea shelter diagrams

Emergency shelters are designed to be short-term solutions, and many cannot withstand rain, wind and sun for more than six months. Yet the average stay in refugee camp is over twenty times that duration.

The IKEA Foundation, in cooperation with the  United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, has developed a longer-term solution to this problem, turning their experience with flat-pack furniture and language-free instruction manuals toward disaster relief efforts in and around war-torn places like Syria (they are already testing in Lebanon and Iraq). Sticklers for detail should scroll carefully below for a step-by-step deconstruction of what goes into this remarkable dwelling.

The problem, in part, is building the most universal unit possible in a world where emergencies happen globally, spanning regions both hot and cold and with vastly different cultural norms. Their solution is much like an ordinary IKEA product: flexible, adaptable, modular and packed into cardboard boxes of components. Naturally, they require no tools that are not included.

While the structures themselves are still only expected to last a few years, they are made to be modified, enhanced and expanded in various ways. For instance, earthen walls and corrugated metal roofs can be pushed up against, fastened to and ultimately help reinforce the core buildings, or even eventually replace the need for underlying framework entirely, rendering it redundant.

ikea shelter finished

The shelters are constructed primarily from polymer panels that clip into a wire frame. On top sits an aluminum-mesh roofing sheet that is designed to reflect sunlight by day and retain heat by night. Solar energy charges a USB outlet for electrical needs. The target price range for mass production is under $ 1000, making it affordable in bulk to international organizations.
