Mr Bean Animation: Cat-Sitting

11 Sep

Written by Stephen Powell

Welcome to the 3rd installment of our Student Showcase Reel to date. We here at Animation Mentor feel so proud of the work that has gone into this reel. 100% student created, 100% solo efforts. Each one of these shots was created by one student alone, though the shots could not have been completed without the support of our incredible student body and the leading industry animators that mentor their work.

Soviet animation: The Tree and the Cat (+ Eng. subtitles)

10 Sep

Made at Kievnauchfilm, 1983. A trully great studio which no longer exists. animator.ru How I miss films like this! I highly recommend buying the DVD shown at the bottom of the above link; it is full of such great films (though without subtitles, unfortunately). The DVD is called “????????? ???????”, though I am not sure if any stores which sell it ship internationally. If anyone needs the subtitles for this one separately, please send me a message.

www.nucleusinc.com Cataract Eye Surgery. This 3D medical animation depicts the phacoemulsification and extracapsular removal of a cataract (cloudy lens), and the placement of an artificial lens. The lens of the eye is responsible for focusing images onto the back of the eye. It is normally transparent. As a normal part of aging, the lens begins to cloud and causes a gradual, painless loss in vision. Cataract removal is most often performed to better examine the back of the eye when monitoring for damage from certain diseases such as diabetes or glaucoma and to improve vision. There are two main types of cataract removal. The large majority of cataract surgeries are performed using the phacoemulsification technique. During the phacoemulsification technique an ultrasound probe breaks the cloudy lens into tiny fragments. The fragments are vacuumed out through a tiny incision. An intraocular lens implant is then inserted to replace the natural lens that was removed. Because the incision is tiny, stitches are often not necessary and visual improvement is usually noted relatively soon after surgery. During the extracapsular technique the cataract is removed as one entire piece. This requires a larger incision and stitches. An intraocular lens implant (artificial lens) is inserted to replace the natural lens that was removed. Recovery is usually slower, due to the larger incision. The stitches sometimes need to be removed, which is usually done in the office. After both

Gallbladder Surgery for Gallstones

08 Sep

www.nucleusinc.com This 3D medical animation shows minimally invasive gallbladder surgery, or cholecystectomy, using a laparoscope to remove gallstones. The animation begins by showing the normal anatomy of the liver and gallbladder. Over time, gallstones form within the gallbladder, blocking the cystic duct, and causing the gallbladder to become enlarged and inflamed. The procedure, sometimes called a “lap-chole”, begins with the insertion of four trocar devices, which allow the physician to see inside the abdomen without making a large incision. Air is added to the abdominal cavity to make it easier to see the gall bladder. Next, we see a view through the laparascope, showing two surgical instruments grasping the gallbladder while a third severs the cystic duct. After the gallbladder is removed, the camera pans around to show that the cystic artery and vein, have already been clipped to prevent bleeding. ANCE00181

Heart Attack

05 Sep

www.nucleusinc.com This 3d medical animation shows a heart attack resulting from atherosclerosis, which is inflammation of an artery. It was designed to be an immersive experience to hold the viewer’s interest in this complex, slow-developing process. Every shot was conceptualized as a visual effect to evoke the sensation of a journey within a dynamic and diverse environment. Beginning with the probable cause, which is damage to the endothelial wall, the story progresses in detail through the stages of atherosclerosis concluding with the resulting damage to the heart.
