Google – Look Inside Google’s Data Centers

17 Oct

Get an inside peek at Google’s data centers and the people who keep them operational.

Though many large enterprises may choose to keep information about their data centers private for security and competitive advantage reasons, Google has opened their doors at the site “Where the Internet Lives”.

For those interested in Google’s inner workings, this website offers a gallery of images focusing on technology (routers, water cooling pipes, cables), the people behind the data centers (fixing cooling systems, diagnosing computer issues, maintaining power generators), and the locations (including Ohio, Oregon, and Finland)….

Windows 7 – Find Recently Created or Modified Files

16 Oct

Don’t remember what you named a recent file or what folder / location you placed it in? Use a date modified search.

It has happened to all of us. You recently created or modified a file in some application in Windows 7, but don’t remember its name or what folder in which you placed it. You can try going back to the original application and hope the filename is in the recently used file list by selecting the “File” menu, but what if the file is not there? All hope is not lost!

1. Click the Folder button in the taskbar….

Windows 7 – The Explorer is Everywhere; Open a File While Saving Another One

16 Oct

When saving or opening a file in most every Windows 7 application, Explorer features can be used – sometimes with interesting effects.

Here’s a tips many new Windows 7 users don’t know about, and I’ve even shown this to a few experienced users. When opening or saving files in most applications, you are actually opening mini Explorer windows.

What does this mean? Right-click inside a blank area of the file area of the dialog box and you can choose how you want files in the current folder to be viewed, sorted, grouped, etc. You can even select “New” in the dialog box to create new files while supposedly inside an “Open” dialog box!…

Windows 7 – Force Notepad or Other Applications to Always Run Full Screen

16 Oct

Tired of your Windows 7 applications not taking up the whole screen?

Applications in Windows 7 run as … well .. windows. They don’t have to take up the full screen, allowing you to view the contents of multiple folders or applications simultaneously. You can move windows around, resize them, minimize them, etc.

However, there may be some applications that you would rather have take up the whole display whenever you start them. For example, if you open Notepad you would rather have the whole screen available for you to edit data – the same with Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word. Or, perhaps you have a smaller monitor and need the full display every time you open up a web browser. Here’s a tip that works with most applications….

Windows 7 – Send Files To Any Application via Right Click Menu

16 Oct

Modify Windows 7’s “Send To” menu to send files to other applications including Notepad.

Since many file types do not have associated programs and you may not want to set up associations for all of them, it may prove useful to try determining the contents by viewing or editing such files in Notepad or another text editor.

To aid with this, right-click on a file in Windows 7 and a “Send To” menu appears. Select this option and you can copy the file to the Desktop as a shortcut, compress the file, send it to an attached CD/DVD drive (if applicable), and other options may be present. Why not add Notepad or your desired text editor to this list for easy access?…

Windows 8 – View File Extensions for Security

16 Oct

Configure Windows 8 Explorer to show file extensions when browsing through files on the Desktop.

For security, it is important to be able to view file extensions when browsing through folders in Windows 8. For example, a miscreant may send you a file named fireworks.jpg that you think is a harmless .JPG photo, yet actually is fully named fireworks.jpg.exe, containing a virulent payload that could harm your machine, data, and/or privacy.

Unlike earlier versions of Windows, Windows 8 does not make you go through so many hoops to enable extension viewing – once you get to the standard Desktop interface, of course….

Windows 8 – View Sports Draft News, Memorabilia News, Podcasts, Buy Tickets, More

16 Oct

Access a variety of sports-oriented websites from the Windows 8 Sports Application.

While the Windows 8 sports application provides access to sports news related to a variety of national and international leagues, the application also has links to other sports-related websites and information, including where to buy tickets, draft news, sports business news, sports memorabilia blogs, and selected podcasts.

1. Click the “Start” button (or press the Windows key on the keyboard) and click the Sports tile from the Start Menu. If you cannot find it, just start typing sports and click “Sports” underneath “Apps” when it displays….

Windows 8 – Toggle Hiding / Minimizing the Ribbon in Explorer

16 Oct

Prevent the ribbon in Windows 8’s Explorer from automatically disappearing after you select an option.

In Windows 8, when you select a menu item from the Ribbon in Explorer, by default the ribbon hides itself. This way you can keep more screen real-estate for actually looking through your files and folders.

However, if you are configuring which files to view, altering how you want icons displayed, or rotating images, you may find it irritating that the ribbon disappears each time you select an option, check a box, etc. While you can select the menu bar again to access the option, why should you have to do this each time?…

Windows 8 – Toggle Computer, Control Panel, Files, Network, Recycle Bin on Desktop

16 Oct

Show or hide a variety of icons on the Windows 8 Desktop: Computer, Control Panel, Files, Network, and/or the Recycle Bin.

By default, the Windows 8 Desktop is fairly sparse, only showing an icon for the Recycle Bin so you can quickly view deleted files that have not been completely removed from the system.

While you can access your Computer, Control Panel, the network, and your user files via the Explorer icon in the Taskbar, you might find it more useful to have Desktop icons that you can double-click for instant access to these locations. …
