    Green Day traveling art show
    visual art
I organized an art show for Green Day and their recently released 21st century breakdown album. Below is the official press release for it.

GREEN DAY’S UPCOMING U.S. TOUR TO FEATURE A ROVING GALLERY SHOW OF INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS AT EACH VENUE

ARTISTS SUCH AS RON ENGLISH, THE LONDON POLICE, AND C215 CREATED WORK INSPIRED BY EACH TRACK ON BAND’S LATEST ALBUM 21ST CENTURY BREAKDOWN

DATELINE – Burbank, CA – Green Day have a special treat in store for fans attending their U.S. tour this summer. A roving art gallery will be set up at each venue to display work by a collection of eclectic artists from around the world, each of whom has been asked to create an original piece inspired by a track on Green Day’s new album 21st Century Breakdown.

The show is curated by New York-based stencil artist and die-hard punk-rock fan Logan Hicks, whose portraits of band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool, and Mike Dirnt will also be on display. A passionate art and music lover, Hicks has assembled an impressive group of noted artists – including world-renowned New York-based painter Ron English, Amsterdam-based street artists The London Police, French stencil artist C215, and British illustrator Will Barras – to show the connection between music and art.

"I chose artists whom I felt had a similar visual approach to art as Green Day does to its music," Hicks says. "Although most of the artists represented are well-established in their careers, they embrace the same emotional rawness with their art, which speaks from the heart and swings with the fist. Their subject matter is struggle and injustice-they shoot from the hip and their art is their weapon."

"We are really excited to be touring with this incredible show," says Armstrong. "Seeing the pieces that our new album has inspired is very exciting. Many of the artists Logan has chosen show their work on the street, and we feel a strong connection to that type of creative expression. We think the fans coming out to see us on the road will love it."

Green Day’s 2009 trek is the band’s first proper tour of the United States and Canada in more than three years. The tour begins July 3rd at Seattle’s Key Arena and will cross North America through the summer, including a July 27th stop at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, before finishing up with a show at the Forum in Los Angeles on August 25th. Please visit www.greenday.com for all cities, venues, and ticket on-sale dates.

Opening Reception: Transformation Through Transportation by Cathedral Arts Project at JAXPORT Gallery
    visual art
    6.28.12
"When our class visited JAXPORT, we were able to see and learn about many new and unfamiliar things. For each student different things sparked interest or inspiration. Some were inspired by the rail cars and train tracks, some the marsh land while others were inspired by the ships and cranes. Students sketched that which inspired them and discussed the subject of this inspiration with each other.

We brought each of our individual experiences and inspirations into the classroom and what emerged was an overarching idea of textures, shapes and patterns that were a part of the many sights. In order to highlight these textures and patterns, the students created printmaking blocks by carving their designs into foam sheets. They then used a traditional printing process to print these blocks into the pieces you see on display. With this process, the image can be printed multiple times.

Earlier in the year, our class studied Origami, the Japanese traditional art of paper folding. During this study we created paper cranes (birds). With the upcoming JAXPORT show, we wanted to honor the birds and wildlife of JAXPORT and the marsh lands that surround it while also highlighting their environmentally conscious practices by creating paper cranes using old annual reports given to us by JAXPORT. We created some on unpainted paper and some paper we painted with watercolor paints, then created the cranes. We wanted these to seem like they were a flock of birds flying through the gallery.

As a final art piece of our class and a culmination of our JAXPORT experience, the students were able to create an art piece about JAXPORT using acrylic paint and a "reverse color" painting technique in order to create more depth and interest in the art piece."

    Arts Umbrella Story

"It was a dream to instil in all children the love of the arts, inspiring them to become healthy, confident, productive, creative citizens. A dream to build a centre that would awaken the artistic potential of young people in a way that hadn’t been done before. It was a dream to make a difference."
    — Carol Henriquez, O.C.,

honorary chair of the Arts Umbrella board of directors, co-founder of Arts Umbrella

In 1979, United Nations’ International Year of the Child, Arts Umbrella opened its doors to 45 children. It was an endeavour buoyed by the dream of five enthusiastic artists concerned about the lack of arts education available to children. The founders served as instructors, the organization’s first board of directors and did everything it took to get their idea off the ground.

The need in the community for children’s arts education was evident, and Arts Umbrella took off instantly. Soon a new building, an increasing group of volunteers and donors, and a high-level Board of Directors were in place.

Arts Umbrella has flourished with a strong vision and an unwavering focus on inspiring kids for life through the arts by providing the highest quality visual and performing arts education to children regardless of their financial circumstances.

At Arts Umbrella, children learn to dance, to paint, to sculpt, to create computer games and cartoons, and to perform. They experience the joy of creation and discover their own creative potential. They learn to appreciate the arts. Through arts education, children gain self confidence, independent thinking, technical skills, discipline, and even improved academic results and specific career direction.

Arts Umbrella’s strong legacy and culture are the result of the vision and "magic" established by the founders, and continued through the work of the community that supports and upholds the organization. Everyone that has been touched by Arts Umbrella — from students past and present, to parents, staff, instructors, volunteers, donors and the board of directors — thrives and is fed by the energy of the thousands of young people who engage in the magic of the Arts Umbrella experience, year after year.

This magic — charismatic, knowledgeable instructors fostering creativity and inspiring passion in children — is a key attribute of Arts Umbrella, and something the organization continues to take very seriously.

By fostering and nurturing the magic, Arts Umbrella has become a truly world-class children’s arts centre serving the community around it, and a model for children’s arts institutions around the world.

A display during the 2009 Arts Crawl, presented by Students Organizing the Multiple Arts and the Visual Arts Student Association, is seen here. This presentation, by the ceramics and sculpture studio in the Visual Arts Building, was just one of many available in the open-house style event on Friday, April 3.

Unfinished col visual, but enough to give you a good idea what the final would look like. It’s actually just a pencil sketch scanned in and coloured – I got carried away! The idea was re-do the line drawing in photoshop or Illustrator to possible use as a website cover page – image mapping each instrument/tool to link to the appropriate page – but I haven’t got around to it yet.
