john singer sargent: a dinner table at night
visual art
Sargent. Oil painting. 1884. 20×26 inches.

A good example of how from a distance things look really good and in order, but up close you can clearly see very broad and simplistic brushstrokes. I encourage you to view original size, you won’t be disappointed…especially if you’re a painter wishing to learn an artist’s methods and style. Sargent was a master of getting across his visual method with graceful simplicity. Very large resolution.

Sargent lived from 1856 to 1925.

Hi-Res PDF (new! second edition! 24/09!)

This issue plays around the conceptual universe of Marcel Duchamp. Not his life, nor his works, just some of his concepts.

– the medium, as an intellectual tool which goes beyond its specificity mocking it.
– the work, regardless of its representative and interpretative character.
– “art”, in terms of conventions, as “amorphous” as possible.
– “construction”, in which the work is not it’s purpose, but an excuse.
– interpretations, or rather readings which can coexist despite being seemingly exclusive.
– objects “aesthetically anesthetized,” lapsed in their likely sight complacency; “rectified”, “assisted”, to give them a new –often unusual- significance. As with the choice of “ready-mades”: “based on visual indifference and a total absence of good or bad taste”
– works “definitively unfinished”.
– rrose sélavy, his alter (-) ego.
– chess, optic machines, mathematics, geometry, “artifacts”.
– “mental painting,” “precision painting”, the rejection of any element in which sight can be delighted.

– aesthetics: – text, – blocks, – photographs, + mixed-media, + painting, + illustration.
– the whole magazine, in spanish and english.

Crowd from Sound Booth

light metres, front
visual art
front jacket, tattered, of the 1982 collaboration between felicia lamport (verse) and edward gorey (illustrations).

one item of note that is less apparent when viewing over the internet, but obvious and appreciated when holding the book in one’s hands: the publisher (everest house and beaverbooks) has no logo, insignia or name stamped or printed on the jacket, and the artwork and names of the author and illustrator, along with the title, are the only visual elements. no price is apparent, and only until the reader opens the book are there any pernicious details on which modern business insists (and even these are reserved and unobtrusive). publishing houses, this is how sensible people like their books presented.

America Needs McGovern: He Can Put It Together
visual art
"America Needs McGovern: He Can Put It Together" George McGovern. By Larry Rivers, after Malcolm Varon, 1972. Color photolithographic halftone poster. 75.6 x 58.4 cm (529 3/4 x 23 in.): Cycling the viewer’s eyes away from a crossed-out sketch of President Nixon to a smiling photograph of George McGovern, this poster by renowned artist Larry Rivers argued that America needed the 1972 Democratic presidential nominee to put the country’s scattered pieces back together. Using a wide range of visual techniques, including pencil sketches, stencil, photography, collage, varied lettering, and puzzle pieces, the artist gave the poster the informal, youthful, and almost rebellious tone that characterized aspects of McGovern’s presidential bid and famous campaign against the Vietnam War.

Terror
visual art
I was assigned to revisit the subject of terror again (the first time I had to re-title them Fear and Hope).

I have mixed feelings about the work, less about the final result (though granted it has many flaws) but by the process it to get to this final image. It ended up being a last minuet endeavor. To keep a long story short I let myself, as I keep doing, get dragged down by trying to prefect a concept for the image rather than the image itself. I drew blanks as to how to visualize the things that terrify me and those that I did come up with were vague. Its something I keep doing to myself. In the end I through out the concept all together, kept some visual ideas that had been floating around and set my self the task of making an image that expressed "terror" only from what I could scan or recycle from past projects.

This is what came out. Its always isolation, lack of definition and thus control or sense of self.

Comments and critiques are always appreciated

Made in Photoshop CS,
Brown paper, inject prints, charcoal, acrylic, clay, string, nails, wood, digital photographs.

Output: 11”x14” (300dpi)

No stock is used. All photos, scans and textures were made by me.

Check out these visual art images:

MAZE »The Path to Typographic Excellence« (for widescreen displays)
visual art
Wallpaper 1920×1200 designed with the typefaces listed here below:

Typefaces in use:

Ricardo Marcins and Erica Jungs (PintassilgoPrints) decorative display face »Changing«
Changing is a lively font, loaded with many automatic interlock pairs that do their magic in OpenType aware applications. Its peculiar design and such choices for letter combinations make this a very dynamic, spirited and useful typeface.

Nick Curtis’ (Nick’s Fonts) retro script face »Fuller Brush NF«

Fuller Brush NF is a snappy single-stroke alphabet from The New Lone Pine ABC of Showcard and Ticketwriting, which Aussie author C. Milnes suggested should be executed with a well-loaded brush, provided the inspiration for this loose, lilting retro script. Its condensed letterforms and tight spacing allow for larger headlines than most brush scripts, and its bouncing baseline adds an extra dollop of visual fun. The PC Postscript, Truetype and Opentype versions contain the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.

Maze: Matevz Medjas (Gigofonts) decorative headline type family »Gf Selfcensor«

Gf Selfcensor Gf Selfcensor is a compressed unicase typeface best suited for use at display sizes. It works well in magazines/newspapers, posters, flyers, and book covers. When printed in black or red it has the character and seriousness of classic newspaper headline fonts, and when brightly colored it becomes live and playful. Negative leading is not a problem with it, it’s a must!

Harajuku (?? "meadow lodging") is the common name for the area around Harajuku Station on the Yamanote Line in the Shibuya ward of Tokyo, Japan.

Every Sunday, young people dressed in a variety of styles including gothic lolita, visual kei, and decora, as well as cosplayers spend the day in Harajuku socializing. The fashion styles of these youths rarely conform to one particular style and are usually a mesh of many. Most young people gather on Jingu Bridge, which is a pedestrian bridge that connects Harajuku to the neighboring Meiji Shrine area.

Harajuku is also a fashion capital of the world, renowned for its unique street fashion. Harajuku street style is promoted in Japanese and international publications such as Kera, Tune, Gothic & Lolita Bible and Fruits. Many prominent designers and fashion ideas have sprung from Harajuku and incorporated themselves into other fashions throughout the world.

Harajuku is also a large shopping district that includes international brands, its own brands, and shops selling clothes young people can afford.

Description: Theresa Bernstein lived to be approximately 111 years old. During her long life, she gained recognition as one of the first women to paint in the Realist style. While she tried to veil her gender by signing her paintings ‘T. Bernstein’, she was both hailed and flailed for "painting like a man" in the 1910s. Her determination was legendary, when she broke her right hand, she painted with her left. When she could no longer hold a brush, she painted by squirting paint from tubes.
