Architect Overboard: Rusted Ship Hull Flipped into Arts Pavilion

Cut from a massive decaying sea vessel, this hollowed-out section of hull has been transformed into a seating and performance space outside of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in South Korea.

Located in Seoul, the Temp’L features an original corroding exterior that contrasts with its freshly-painted white interior and an array of greenery adorning it inside and out.

A balcony and spiral staircase let visitors wind their way up inside this partial shell of the old ship, making their way to a semi-enclosed alcove shrouded by trees.

The red-and-white theme plays off of concrete and brick on the adjacent museum building while the shape and texture set it starkly apart.

“Any great cultural vestiges can lose their function,” says Shinslab Architecture. “In the same way, a material can also lose its original value over time.”

Poppin, a New York-based shop for modern office products, teamed up with students from the Rochester Institute of Technology for this edition of ‘Metaproject’ to deliver a series of economical, reproducible yet aesthetically pleasing and highly functional accessories. The results solve a lot of storage problems commonly seen in workspaces, especially those that have switched to a minimalist open-plan design scheme that leaves no room for drawers, hooks and cabinets. The creations include the High-Rise Hanging Family, modular organizers that fit over a felt divider; Branch Holder for your keys, bags and headphones; The Booster Desk so you can stand up when you feel like it; the Munch Mat Takeout Bag so you don’t make a mess with your lunch, and the Task Chair Overhanger for purses, scarves and jackets.

World’s First Art Exhibition for Dogs Features Fountains, Fans & Cars

British inventor, artist and satirist Dominic Wilcox is at it again, this time with a contemporary art exhibition aimed at canine attendees with a range of interactive installations purpose-built for pups.

Play More in London has an array of dog-oriented artworks set low on the gallery walls as well as other more directly experiential displays.

Cruising Canines, for instance, includes a cardboard car with cut-out windows and a fan to simulate a brisk drive through the English countryside.

Dinnertime Dream consists of a giant dog bowl that serves as a ball pit, the balls looking like extra-large pieces of dried dog food.

A series of normal-sized doggy bowls operate as fountains, shooting water between them that can be used for bathing or drinking by so-inclined canines.

“Contemporary art has long been an important source of inspiration and fascination for humans,” says Wilcox, “but never before has it been created with a view to drawing the same kind of emotions out of animals instead.”

Complimenting the interactive elements are a series of original paintings and multimedia displays by artists Nick White, Clare Mallison, Joanne Hummel-Newell, Robert Nicol and Michelle Thompson. While amusing for human companions as well, these works were tailored to be visible to dogs in terms of their colors and shades. The exhibition and its contents were all crafted in consultation with dog experts and veterinarians. It really is, as they say, for the dogs.

Toasteroid: Print Your Own Custom Toast Design With This App

You don’t necessarily need skills to be a food artist these days, now that smartphone apps make it possible to do things like print custom designs on your breakfast. A gadget called the Toasteroid (a toaster on steroids?) caters to those who demand more than just the browning of bread from the typically simple kitchen appliance, boasting that it also functions as a personal weather forecaster, private messenger and doodle pad. If Kickstarter is any gauge, there’s been a long-simmering demand for just such a device.

The Toasteroid comes with a companion mobile app, and you connect your smart phone to the toaster via Bluetooth. Choose from a collection of templates available within the app or draw your own design, which will have to be fairly simple and pixelated by virtue of the way the toaster works. You can also request that the toaster prints today’s weather right onto your breakfast. There’s a fairly sensitive brownness control, and if you don’t feel like fussing with it, an ordinary lever on the side lets you use it like a normal toaster.

If you know somebody else who has a Toasteroid, you can send them a private message via toast. Presumably, the app will prompt them to stick a piece of bread into their own toaster so they can receive it. The makers also note that you can leave yourself or a loved one a reminder that’s hard to ignore – at least, until you stuff it into your mouth. Probably the most useful function is pleasing picky kids who demand that their favorite cartoon characters be visible on every conceivable surface.

If you’re still asking why, Toasteroid is ready with an answer: “Because why not.” Sure, not everything in our homes should be a needlessly complicated smart gadget, but the Toasteroid does have all the same functions as any high-end toaster and costs less than a lot of them if you get in on the pre-sale.

A number of opulent luxury automobile creations debuted this August at car shows around the world, including limited editions, custom-painted showcases and other elite motor vehicles accessible only to the rich and famous.

Billed as the world’s first ‘megacar,’ the Koenigsegg Agera RS (with a single, one-of-a-kind ‘XS’ version located in the United States) is set to become one of the most powerful street-legal production cars on American roads and features a lightweight removable hardtop that stows away under the front hood. It features a 5-liter twin turbocharged V8 engine and a CIMA 7-speed paddle-shift transmission and weighs just 3075 pounds.

The 570GT MSO concept by McLaren aims to be the “ultimate sports car experience that’s perfect for daily use, longer journeys and weekends away,” with a rear-opening glass hatch, panoramic roof and leather-trimmed touring deck. Its exhaust system is made from titanium to be 30% lighter than a standard stainless steel system and for a richer tone, with visible heat shields that change color as the system heats and cools. An integrated 12-speaker surround-sound system provides a top-of-the-line aural experience while driving.

A convertible version of the luxury automaker’s 650s is an open-top super car that reaches 62mph in 3 seconds and a top speed of 204 miles per gallon, all while getting 24.2 miles to the gallon. Door blades direct air to the front splitter to enhance cornering grip and balance. The convertible handles and rides just like the coupe version of the 650s, and its retractible hard top and roof mechanism can automatically raise or lower in less than 17 seconds.

The lightest supercar yet to be built weighs in at 2,685 pounds ( a full thousand pounds lighter than the Porsche 918) thanks to its carbon fiber and titanium construction. The $ 2.6 million dollar Pagani Huayra features 789 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque with 75 millisecond shifts. A large back wing, front splitter and new body panels update the latest Huayra from previous versions; only 20 will ever be produced.

Street Eats: Free Urban Refrigerators for Sharing Spare Food

A few years back, one man in Saudi Arabia was hailed as a hero for putting leftover food from his restaurant in a refrigerator along the street for anyone to take; since then, an ongoing effort in Europe has been scaling up the same approach to serve whole communities of people in need.

In Germany, urban refrigerators have spread thanks to help from online food-sharing apps and thousands of volunteers. A digital platform that connects those in need with stores and restaurants that have excess food boasts 10,000,000 pounds of shared edibles to date. Still, they have a long way to go: the European Commission estimates that over 100,000,000 tons of usable food is discarded annually across the EU. Globally, a whopping 40% of edible leftovers are thrown away.

Currently, over 100 shared food spots have been developed across Germany, 20 of which are located in Berlin. Large chain supermarkets are playing a significant part, making a coordinated effort to donate food they cannot sell but that is still safe and edible. Passers by also fuel the efforts, however, depositing whatever they can spare at these sites.

Germany is leading the charge on multiple food-related fronts these days, home to the world’s first packaging-free grocery store and first in-store vertical micro-farms. As a landlocked country without much space to grow (in terms of population or produce), Germany is bent on innovation and looks likely to remain a leader in this department for years to come.

Unfree Wheeling: Amusingly Surreal Vintage Soviet Auto Ads

The Soviet Union not only manufactured cars, they exported them to buyers charmed (or duped) by some amusingly and bemusingly photographed advertisements.

Putin the pedal to the metal lately? Don’t let the jet-fighter-like rear fender air intakes fool you, the ZAZ-968 “Zaporozhets” wasn’t exactly a muscle car even by Soviet standards. Built at the Zaporizhian Automobile Factory in Melitopol, Ukrainian SSR from 1971 through 1980, the ZAZ-968 was propelled by a 40hp air-cooled V4 engine mounted in the rear. Export versions were upgraded with international-spec headlights, a safety glass windscreen and an anti-theft steering lock which was rarely, if ever, tested.

Wonder if that guitar-playing model knows “Back In The USSR”. Designed to be a “people’s car” that was sturdy yet affordable, the Zaporozhets is fondly recalled by Russians of a certain age… including some guy named Vladimir Putin. According to the Russian President’s official website, Putin’s mother won a ZAZ-968 in a lottery when young Vlad was a third year university student. His parents then gave the car to Putin – no word if he frequently drove it shirtless.

Russian car manufacturer AvtoVAZ, based in Tolyatti, Samara Oblast based their boxy Lada Classic on the mid-sixties Fiat 124 sedan. Between 1966 and 2012, over 20 million Classic sedans and station wagons had been sold without the vehicle undergoing a major design change. Dig that groovy vinyl roof on the last ad above; it kinda breaks up the Red Square look.

About 60% of all Lada Classics were exported to both East Bloc and West Bloc nations – the USA being a notable exception; Americans had to wait for the Yugo to “enjoy” owning a workers-paradise-made copy of a Fiat. Note what appears to be (at first glance) a Soviet laptop computer in the faux photoshoot ad above.

AvtoVAZ introduced the VAZ-2108 in 1984 with export versions named Samara and domestic market cars labeled Sputnik – hey, Plymouth had a Satellite so why not? The French copy on the ad above translates to “More stylish and less expensive. Hold on! Yeah, hold on to your wallet.

Prismatic Graffiti: Bending Light into a Spectrum of Wall Murals

These intricately choreographed dances of light and color are at once static but ephemeral, lasting longer than conventional light graffiti but nonetheless made of impermanent light.

Stephen Knapp is a sculptor and muralist who has worked in metal and glass, but his latest array of light paintings turn the latter toward a new and more indirect purpose.

His pieces are not sketched, programmed or otherwise visualized in advanced, but emerge as he begins cutting, polishing, shaping and places pieces of glass on the wall. Unlike many light graffiti artists, the work does not rely on a photographer capturing a fleeting moment, but can be put up on museum walls indefinitely.

“The fun of what I do with light, is that there is nothing in our visual memory that prepares us for what I’m doing,” says Knapp. “The fact that what I create can just be done with light, that there is no paint on these panels, is absolutely astounding to people. What I am trying to do most of all here is challenge any traditional notion of perception. What is it? Is it real? Is it not real? Does it matter?”

His work has been featured in galleries around the world from Boise to Naples and a solo exhibition is currently on display at the Pensacola Museum of Art.

Light Art Comes to Life: Dancing Animated Gifs by Lucea Spinelli

Beams of light dance, jump, squiggle, scatter and interact with each other as if they’ve taken on a life of their own in a series of animated light art gifs by New York City-based photographer Lucea Spinelli. Abandoned school buses, public park benches, playgrounds, glass jars and human bodies become the settings for surreal, almost ghostly scenes calling to mind the common superstition of supernatural beings affecting electricity.

In fact, all that seems to be missing from some of these animations is a proton pack from Ghostbusters, as the clusters of light created by Spinelli take on the movements of autonomous beings. Spinelli takes still shots of moving light using long exposure methods and then strings them together to create these animated sequences.

“In her project phötosgraphé, Lucea Spinelli creates long exposure photographs that afford us a view into the unknown,” reads the statement on the artist’s website. “For the duration of the open shutter the lens becomes a canvas upon which Lucea paints with light. The illuminated forms she creates interact with spaces and objects in a wa that evoke the unseen – such as spirit, dreams and metaphor – within the everyday.”

“Often staying in the dark for long hours and relying on muscle memory alone, the process reflects ritual as a necessary part of interacting and evoking the unseen aspects of our reality. Thus by using a medium is commonly used to mimic reality, to suspend it, Lucea invites us to push beyond the bounds of visual perception to explore other ways of knowing. Finally, by stringing sequences of these long exposure photographs together into an animated gif, the light forms are literally brought to life as they dance across the forever looping frame.”

LEGO-Like Architecture: $5,000 Homes from Recycled Plastic Blocks

A Columbian company is tackling plastic waste issues and affordable housing with a single ingenious solution: interlocking LEGO-like bricks that can be used to build houses for a few thousand dollars per structure. Walls are formed using a slim slotted brick then framed using a thicker module used for beams and columns, locking the smaller units into place and providing rigid vertical and lateral support.

Conceptos Plásticos is addressing their technology to rising populations of urban poor, families with the time but not financial means or materials to construct their own dwellings. The company works with locals to source plastic and create all kinds of spaces, including emergency shelters, community and educational buildings.

The upcycled plastic blocks are easy to use and require no construction experience. They are durable, fire- and earthquake-resistant and much cheaper than other available materials. The company estimates the lifespan of the blocks at 500 years.

“We hope to create a movement where more and more people get involved,” say the company founders. “We want to develop new products that make better use of the thousands and thousands of tons of plastic that is discarded.”

“There will soon be more plastic in the sea than fish, so we really need to do something big.” Recent projects using this novel material include a hostel for displaced victims of violence in the Columbian countryside.
