Aren’t We Nautical: 10 Swell Ship-Shaped Buildings

From the fish out of water department: Landlubbers leery of getting their feet wet can live vicariously by visiting these 10 swell ship-shaped buildings.

If the Wanlihao Ship Building was an attempt to make the Chinese city of Chengdu famous for something other than pandas and spicy food, then a hearty pat on the back goes to its designers. Ditto for Flickr user littledutchboy for capturing and posting the image above.

This rather large waterfront edifice houses a number of businesses and services including several seafood restaurants and the exclusive-sounding Flagship Club… sounds like the kind of place Judge Smails and Thurston Howell III might hang out at. As for being just a tad gaudy and ostentatious, well, you oughta see it at night!

If you were expecting a “poop deck” joke, forget abou… oh. Anyway, this public restroom in the city of Chennai, India doesn’t just look like a brick ship house, it’s built like one too. The top photo from iTravelnet dates from March of 2007 while the lower image from Lydia Depillis taken in the summer of 2012 shows significant deterioration. We’ll leave the state of the interior to your imagination.

Museum of Maritime Science – Tokyo, Japan

The Museum of Maritime Science (Fune-no-Kagakukan in Japanese) in Odaiba dates from 1974 and was one of the first buildings at that location constructed on land reclaimed from Tokyo Bay… perhaps the contractors were hedging their bets a bit. The scale of the building is highlighted by the 83-meter (273ft) long Antarctic icebreaker Soya moored just offshore.

The ship-like styling is purely intentional; inside visitors will find a veritable 3D history book that takes one back to the era of the Shoguns, forward through the destructive Second World War and into the present era. Models of the Yamato – the world’s largest battleship – share space with those of civilian and military ships, submarines and seaplanes.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) is America’s largest shipbuilder and the ONLY one able to design and build the nation’s nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. The company’s headquarters building in Newport News reflects the firm’s long history (it was known until 2008 as Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding) and continuing focus on shipbuilding.

Only in Russia: World’s First Floating Nuclear Power Plant

It sounds at best far-fetched and at worst frightening, at least at first, but this unique water-based energy station is already under construction and is designed to (safely) generate power and fresh water to over 200,000 people.

The Akademik Lomonosov is being built at a submarine construction facility and is set to launch before 2020. While it is set to be stationed offshore, it opens up a new world of possibilities for fueling remote settlements, temporary outposts, research stations or floating cities.

The vessel will produce an impressive 70 megawatts of electricity – more than enough to support a mid-sized city. It will also desalinate ocean water to increase regional freshwater supplies.

With the world wondering about the fate of the Fukushima plant in Japan, following its fateful impact by a tsunami and subsequent fallout, it seems like a strange time to be working on projects where water meats nuclear power. Still, in this case the uranium is far less enriched and of the same type being used in Russian icebreakers already. The power plant is a project of LLC Baltiysky Zavod Shipbuilding, a St. Petersburg division of United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC).

Woodhouses: Photos Envision Tiny Urban Life in the Forest

What tiny universes might exist behind the bark of trees deep within the forest? You’re most likely envisioning the grubs, ants, beetles and other creatures that actually live out their (sometimes fascinating) life cycles there, but artist Daniel Barreto sees something else altogether. His digitally composed ‘woodhouses’ imagine tiny urban worlds that could be visible to the human eye if only we looked a little closer.

Barreto photographed trees in a snowy landscape in New Hampshire, as well as doorways, windows and other urban architectural elements from Boston, combining the different sets for an ethereal result.

Illuminated entrances with intricate ceilings beckon passersby to ascend into the higher branches of a birch tree from within the trunk. Stained glass windows glow, and restaurants offer refuge from the cold.

The flickering lights of gif images from Barreto’s series make the illusion even more convincing, and might just make you want to take a walk around the woods to see what you can spot yourself.

Urban Nest: New Round Amphitheater Section for High Line

New York’s elevated park is expanding in new directions both physically and proverbially, its new addition a stark circular shift from the overall linear nature of the existing spaces.

Situated at the intersection of West 30th Street and 10th Avenue, the lush green Spur is at the heart of the new High Line section, providing a fresh kind of urban gathering, interaction and performance space.

Converting more disused rail tracks into raised green space, the nest-like bowl of seating and vegetation provides both background sound relief from the surrounding city and views back out onto its streets below.

Designed by James Corner Field Operations in collaboration with Diller Scofidio + Renfro, this pivotal turning point (quite literally a bend in the overall plan of the park) features woodland grasses, maples, perennials and ferns. The rest of the park bends up into the rail yards at this key point, wrapping back west across Manhattan toward the Hudson River.

The breadth of possibilities is breath-taking, from graffiti tags to animated rainbows (above), mesmerizing patterns to abstract compositions (below).

The gadget’s creators point out that light painting dates back nearly 125 years yet the tools used to create it have evolved only on the side of cameras and not in terms of the actual methods of illumination.

The founders of Bitbanger Labs saw this market void as a worthy challenge and began experimenting with drafts and prototypes, slowly developing a handheld wonder with powerful features even they did not anticipate at the beginning.

Short Film Explores Intersection of Fashion & Architecture

Fashion and architecture intersect in a short film called Kaplinksi, wherein models wear and then break out of architectural structures made of children’s wooden blocks. The film is a collaborative work between filmmaker Benjamin Seroussi and architect David Tajchman, and features abstract, geometric Constructivist design from the Soviet Union circa 1920.

The four-minute black and white film explores both the human body as a framework for architecture, and architecture as a cage. Abstract cities and skyscrapers form around the models, and begin to self-destruct. Constructivism inspired both the photography and the look of the film.

The blocks used in the film are ‘Kapla blocks,’ small pine rectangles of identical size and shape that are stacked rather than interlocking, so any structures made with them are temporary and rather fragile. The name of the film refers both to these bricks and to the Russian influence of the aesthetic.

Turn Back the Dial: 13 Retro Historical TV Set Designs

Early television sets ranged from tiny screens housed in laughably oversized cabinets to stylish midcentury modern designs. Some, like a Russian TV from 1932, don’t even look remotely like the televisions we’re familiar with today. Here are 13 historical TV set designs dating from 1928 through 1991.

How cool is this midcentury modern TV console? Shaped like a sailboat, it features an upper section that rotates like a sail on a mast so you can tilt the 23-inch screen in the desired direction. The lower cabinet holds additional multi-media features with a pull-out, 4-speed phonograph, a TV tuner and a multi-band radio receiver.

The first television set that was available to the public in Russia looks exactly like you would expect – basically, as if it were a piece of military equipment.

Once upon a time, having a gigantic ugly faux-wood-covered box in your living room was considered a sign of prestige. The GE Performance Television is about as ridiculous as it gets, especially since the picture was terrible owing to the fact that it was essentially just a regular TV tube flipped and back-projected onto that giant screen. GE marketed it as “a super-size TV with a picture three times as big as a 25-inch diagonal console and the ‘chairside convenience’ of random access remote control.”

Before ‘real’ color TVs were available, CBS labs came up with this contraption – essentially a black-and-white television equipped with a spinning mechanical wheel of red, blue and green filters that added color to the picture seen on the screen. CBS was all ready to start selling these things when RCA protested that an all-electronic color system (which they were researching, but had not yet developed) would make more sense. Ultimately, the Zenith design was briefly used as a teaching tool for surgery, but never sold to the public.

This novelty television didn’t really do anything special – it just looks cool, modeled after a space helmet with a closing lid. They can still be found on eBay for under $ 100.

Garden Bridge: Lush River-Spanning High Line for London

A unique green retreat and pedestrian pathway is set to rival elevated parks around the world, including New York’s own High Line, right in the heart of London. This project stands out from its lofty peers in many regards, but most boldly: it is set over the River Thames rather than buildings or roads.

Heatherwick Studio, known for work in architecture, urban infrastructure, sculpture and design, is teaming up with landscape designer Dan Pearson and global engineering firm Arup to realize this massive and bold cross-disciplinary endeavor.

Crossing over 1,000 feet of river, the bridge will branch out into smaller spaces and seating areas and be populated with a wide range of regional flora. The complex plan will frame views of the city and provide opportunities for different kinds of performances and interactions.

The bridge is intended to bring a place of peace, quite and greenery back to the heart of the city as well as serving the role of pedestrian route. It will be both an activator of the two newly-joined neighborhoods and a stunning green landmark.

Little People in Paris: 5 Tiny Street Art Scenes by Slinkachu

The tiny figures of Slinkachu play out surreal scenarios ranging from dramatic to comedic, all against the backdrop of life-sized props that seem giant by comparison. His latest set of little plays took place on the streets of Paris.

His Little People works hide in plain sight, almost too small to see unless spotted out of the corner of one’s eye. He was invited to France for “ReAct Paris, a conference organised by the European Parliament to tackle the problems of unemployment in Europe, particularly youth unemployment, which in some parts of Europe stand close to a miserable 30%.”

Fitting the theme, most of his installations this time around featured people hard at work, from miniature electricians to tiny scientists, group meetings around graphs and workers arranged on a horizontal I-beam (reenacting a classic New York City Photograph).

Previous Slinkachu series, like the Little People of London, has also been seen in galleries and on the streets of other major cities from New York to Beijing. His subjects often interact with everyday detritus in curious ways, finding their on way to work with whatever they encounter a local scale.

Secret Cities: Capturing Hidden Abandoned Places on Film

Just beyond all of the noise and activity of daily urban life is a secret world of forgotten spaces which are nearly always dank and dusty, but often surprisingly beautiful. Photographer Andrew Brooks seeks out these spots in Manchester, UK and Sittard-Geleen, The Netherlands, capturing them on film so the less adventurous can experience a small fraction of their crumbling glory.

Brooks gains entry into grand disused buildings that seem frozen in time, like the Hulme Hippodrome and Manchester’s Albert Hall, as well as subterranean tunnels and decommissioned water towers. At his website, the photographer provides detailed information about each location he shoots, describing what it felt like to experience them firsthand, as well as offering his stunning images.

The forgotten spaces just out of view of the average person in virtually any major city around the world start to occupy ‘imaginary spaces,’ says Brooks. It’s easy to envision them as settings for all sorts of fictional intrigue, to let our imaginations run wild with the possibilities of these often complex spaces, yet most of us are too wrapped up in our immediate surroundings to give them much thought.

“The familiar space we occupy gradually take on the character of wallpaper in our lives as we hurry from meeting to meeting, commitment to commitment, never stopping to appreciate the places where we live. In our rush we miss both the fantasy and reality of our pace in the world, habitually ignoring even the points where the opportunities for simple adventure encourage us to indulge.”
