Trick of the Light: 12 Shining Works of Holographic Art

21 Jan

[ By Steph in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

Holography Art Main
Holograms suggest a depth and dimension that isn’t really there, an illusion of matter in space that can range from a low-tech flickering image in a children’s book to ghostly computer-generated projections of people on stage. No matter how simple or complex the techniques used, it’s all a trick of the light, a way of fooling our eyes – whether they’re just images painted onto layers of glass or created with three-dimensional HDTV video.

Dancing Japanese Holograms by Teamlab

Hologram Art Dancing Japanese Teamlab

Visitors to the Singapore Art Museum found themselves surrounded by ghostly dancing figures, some playing instruments, in what seemed like a book of Japanese illustrations come to vivid, kinetic life. The maze of holograms is a digital installation by Teamlab, inviting anyone entering the darkened gallery to move within and even interact with the figures. Each figure senses the presence of the viewer and responds by playing music, creating a ripple effect in other nearby holograms.

Three-Dimensional Mesh Portraits

Hologram Art Mesh Portraits

Depending on where you stand when you view these three-dimensional works by artist Seth Wulsin, you’ll see either a jumble of different facial features or a holographic image that seems to move slightly. The large-scale pieces, entitled Ánimas, consists of portraits painted on suspended mesh screens. When viewed from the front, they come together into a sort of holographic image. Moving closer or further away gives each portrait extra dimension.

Holographic Trees in a Landscape

Hologram Art Trees Landscape

Vivid blue holograms of trees appear in unlikely places, like the desert, in this high-tech installation by Kelly Richardson. The artist uses high definition video and three-channel projection to create the illusion. Says Richardson of the work, “Mining the aesthetics of cinema and science fiction, The Erudition presents a lunar-esque looking landscape with what appears to be an unlikely monument or proposal, consisting of holographic trees blowing in fictional wind. Is this slightly malfunctioning display a forgotten site for proposed colonization? Better yet, is this some kind of alien artwork?”

Ghostly Holographic Art Drawn on Panels of Glass

Hologram Art Panes of Glass

Beijing-ased artist Xia Xiaowan paints imagery onto panes of glass with special colored pencils, and then layers the glass to create a three-dimensional appearance. This sort of ‘painted hologram’ achieves the same effects as high-tech holographic art in an entirely manual, low-tech way. Each image is made up of 14 to 30 panes of glass, seeming to move and shift as you walk around it and view it from different perspectives.

Hourglass Lamp: Grid-Free LED Powered by Falling Sand

20 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

hourglass diy powered lamp

Traditional timepiece meets inventive illumination in this human-powered hourglass lamp that draws its energy elegantly from grains of falling sand.

hourglass light large sized

Designed by Danielle Trofe, each fixture pivots around a central point so users can easily rotate the wood-and-glass core, thus refreshing the timer and turning the light back on each time it runs out.

hourglass table sized light

A larger and longer-lit variant comes in the form of a table, essentially an extension of the same design but in a multi-functional format.

hourglass and mushroom lights

Other works by Trofe include the above mushroom-shaped lamps (Mush-Lume), which is built from agricultural byproducts (including mushrooms) and seems to balance precariously on its base. These are scheduled to launch on Kickstarter next month.

Put To Sleep: 12 Sad Abandoned Pet Shops & Vet Clinics

20 Jan

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned veterinary clinic
Put away the cat-carrier and make your own Cone of Shame; these abandoned veterinary clinics and shuttered pet shops are closed fur good.

Jersey Snore

Ocean County Veterinary Clinic Lakewood NJ abandoned(images via: Lost Destinations)

Ocean County Veterinary Clinic in Lakewood, New Jersey is a pretty grim place, even for New Jersey, though one would have to agree things are looking up now that the pet clinic has closed and the animals have gone. Whispered rumors of poor care by clinic managers and unconfirmed anecdotes of euthanized animal carcasses found in the clinic’s dumpsters dogged (sorry) the facility for years.

Ocean County Veterinary Clinic Lakewood NJ abandoned(images via: Lost Destinations)

The labyrinth of claustrophobic chain link cages in the back supports long-running allegations the clinic had contracted with local animal control departments to “warehouse” stray dogs and cats, most of which never escaped a presumably grim fate. “There is a heavy, doomed feeling within these cages;” reports urban explorer “Shady” from Lost Destinations, “even the very trees seems to forbid entrance as they stretch their thorny limbs across the entry gate.” Scarier than Snooki!

Roo The Day

Small Animal Clinic UQ Brisbane closed(image via: ABC News)

Time’s up for the Small Animal Clinic at the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus, which has closed after serving area pet-owners for over half a century. While the decision to shut down the St Lucia clinic and transfer its staff and functions to the newer, larger Gratton clinic may be sound financially, Brisbane residents who brought roughly 9,000 small pets to the red brick building annually are, er, hopping mad.

The Doctor Is OUT

Lake Veterinary Hospital Oakland sign(images via: Beth Budwig and KGO-TV)

The Lake Veterinary Hospital in Oakland had been patching up pets for the better part of 40 years when suddenly, without any warning, it shut its doors. The owner was nowhere to be found, leaving pet-owners not only at a loss but facing the prospect of their pets’ medical records being lost as well. Thanks to Michael Finney of KGO-TV’s “7 On Your Side”, however, the story has a happy ending: the vet was located and clients were assured their pets’ records are safe and will be sent to them. No telling what lies in store for the clinic and its awesome retro sign, though.

Denver Broken

closed Capitol Hill Animal Care Center Denver(images via: 1031 Net Lease and JustDial)

The former Capitol Hill Animal Care Center only closed recently but it still exudes an ominous “Frankenstein’s Castle” vibe all too commonly found with abandoned, closed and disused businesses. Located in Denver, Colorado, the clinic evidently wasn’t a hit with owners of dogs, cats, birds and (wait for it)… broncos.

LEGO Architecture Studio: Boldly Monochromatic Block Set

19 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Gaming & Computing & Technology. ]

lego architectural white sketch

A colorless LEGO kit may sound boring at first blush, but consider the spatial advantages of letting form, line and shadow stand apart from the profusion of colors normally associated with their iconic blocks.

lego architecture studio box

LEGO Architecture Studio‘s pigment-free approach is unusual for the company and intentionally so: it is made to create an experience that is more like pencil or pen sketching in three dimensions, a thinking-through-building process without the complications of shades and hues.

lego monochromatic block set

lego architecture studio booklet

Though the all-white block series contains over 1,200 pieces uniformly absent of color, it also comes with a colorful 268-page book that shows aspiring architects (or simply interested kids) what is possible in the world of built environments.

lego color companion book

This companion volume features the work of famous designers and firms including REX Architecture, Sou Fujimoto, SOM, MAD Architects, Tham & Videgård, and Safdie Architects, covering a range of theory and practice, concepts and reality, all from a diverse group of professionals.

lego all white blocks

From FastCo: “At the end of each chapter, the lead architects will all sit around a table with Lego and play with the pieces! Only then is the reader invited to take part in a hands-on Lego workshop exploring some of the theories and concepts explored in the chapter, which can range from exercises exploring symmetry, mass, density, the use of negative space, modules, repetition, and more.”

lego no color kit

The target audience is also ambiguous – the set could be fun for kids, or ideal for teenagers who want to try their hand at architectural concepts and design before deciding on a college major or career path. In the end, perhaps adults will appreciate it the most, or at least best understand and appreciate the aesthetic understatement … then again, children often understand best that a limited palette of props leaves more to the imagination.

Darkened Cities: Urban Skylines Minus Light Pollution

18 Jan

[ By Steph in Art & Photography & Video. ]

Darkened Cities 1

What would your city look like if it went completely dark? Words like majestic, awe-inspiring and magical come to mind – not as descriptions for the cities themselves, but how some of their most iconic architecture would look as black silhouettes against the bright starry skies of remote places. Artist Thierry Cohen gives us an idea of just who amazing these visuals would be in his series, ‘Darkened Cities.’

Darkened Cities 2

Cohen doesn’t just superimpose random images of the night sky behind each skyline – the imagery is actually what the sky would look like in each of those precise locations. Using methods pioneered by early 19th century photographers, Cohen first takes photos of each location, isolating and darkening the cities themselves, before adding in the sky.

Darkened Cities 3

Taking note of the exact latitude, longitude and angle of each city, the artist tracks the earth’s rotation to capture the sky in a place where light pollution doesn’t affect the clarity of the stars, like the Mohave desert.

Darkened Cities 4

Pictured here, in order of appearance, are Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, San Francisco, Paris, Tokyo, Sao Paulo and New York. See more at Thierry Cohen’s website.

Lucky Rainbow: Time Lapse Pics of Traffic Light Piercing Fog

17 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

time lapse light

The right place, proper timing and a keen eye conspired to help a photographer capture this eerie nighttime phenomena at a crossroads outside of Weimar, Germany.

rainbow night light green

rainbow night light yellow

rainbow night light red

German photographer Lucas Zimmermann found and shot this intersection at each stage of the its cyclical change, capturing green, yellow and red.

He also went a step beyond the sequential with one particularly impressive shot spanning the entire cycle, creating a rainbow in the mist.

rainbow light black white

His other work spans from the rural United States to the streets of Beijing, but usually focuses on people over places – this set, however, proved a worthy exception.

3D Cat Furniture Set: Modular Hangouts for Walls & Ceilings

17 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

cat interior room design

Furnishings for felines are nothing new, but this one-stop shop provides modular bridges, beds, posts and platforms designed as a kit-of-parts solution to turn any room into a cat’s personalized paradise.

cat lounge furniture system

cat ceiling hung bed

Goldtatze boasts ground-up scratching posts but also wall-hanging walkways and ceiling-mounted spaces to allow cats full access both horizontally and vertically, while conveniently leaving room below and between for human companions (especially useful in small-space urban dwellings).

Designer and craftsman Stefan Hofmann set about to solve a problem for his own domestic best friend (an indoor-only cat) and went on to create solutions that could be deployed beyond his own home.

By breaking the system down into a series of individual pieces, the effect is much like that of visiting an IKEA store – the parts are made to be structurally and functionally autonomous, but also to mix and match in custom configurations.

cat wall mounted platforms

From scratching posts to snuggle bowls, the resulting furnishings and fixtures play on feline favorites like boxes and baskets, providing all kinds of places to explore or simply curl up and observe surroundings (from a safe, secure and self-selected distance, of course).

World’s Coolest Dorms: 7-Story Circular Student Housing

16 Jan

[ By Steph in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ]

World's Coolest Dorms 1

Many college dorms – especially at public schools – are little more than prison-like rows of cheap, boring housing with no architectural interest to speak of. That’s definitely not the case at Tietgen Student Hall in the Ørestad district of Copenhagen, a circular seven-story building measuring 288,000 square feet with 360 rooms.

World's Coolest Dorms 2

The circular shape enables all rooms to face outwards with a view of the courtyard, emphasizing equality and community. It also lets in lots of natural light. Each of the rooms has either a French window or a balcony.

World's Coolest Dorms 3

Communal facilities on the ground floor include 30 kitchens, each with four fridges and two stoves, as well as music rooms, a bike storage room, a gym, a computer room, a study hall, an assembly hall, and outdoor sports areas. There are also sewing, bike and wood workshops.

World's Coolest Dorms 4

Completed in 2006 and designed by Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitekter, the building looks more like a luxury apartment complex than college housing. “The house itself says what the idea behind it is: community,” say the architects. “You can walk all the way round on all floors. No hallways are a dead end; no doors are locked. The house does not turn its back on anyone.”

Failed Jungle Utopia: 7 Abandoned Wonders of Brazil

16 Jan

[ By Steph in 7 Wonders Series & Global. ]

Aandoned Brazil Main
The remains of Henry Ford’s failed rubber-producing city, two rusting theme parks, intricate colonial facades and a railroad that set the scene for 7,000 deaths are among Brazil’s fascinating abandonments. Whether set deep within the Amazon or in the thick of some of the world’s busiest and most metropolitan cities, these 7 abandoned wonders amaze and intrigue.

Abandoned Christmas Theme Park: Albanoel

Abandoned Brazil Park Albanoel 1

Abandoned Brazil park Albanoel 2

Cidade Albanoel is a Santa Claus-centric park dreamed up by local politician Antonio Albano Reis, who was known as the ‘Santa Claus of Quintino.’ Meant to be the largest themed attraction in Brazil, the park would have also had a bunch of other teemed areas, like a replica of an Old West town. A plot of land the equivalent of 460 football fields was purchased and work began. Water slides were constructed, foundations were laid for the Western town, and Santa Land was completed.  But Reis, the money, brains and motivation behind the project, perished in a tragic car accident just outside the gates in 2000, and everything came to a screeching halt. Since Santa Land was already done, it opened to the public, but closed after just a few short years.

Drowned Church of Old Petrolândia

Abandoned Brazil Petrolandia Church 1

Abandoned Brazil Petrolandia Church 2

Here’s a nice example of an abandonment that’s actually way more interesting and beautiful after its loss to the forces of nature than it was to start. The church of old Petrolândia currently resembles some sort of ancient ruin, a series of brick-accented arches rising from blue-green waters. Most of the town was relocated due to the construction of a dam for a new hydroelectric plant. The remains of the rest were flooded, now lost beneath the surface, with the exception of this one tall structure.

Fordlândia: Henry Ford’s Failed Jungle Fantasy

Abandoned Brazil Fordlandia 2

Abandoned Brazil Fordlandia 1

In 1928, Henry Ford trumpeted an idealized American city, in the middle of the Amazon: come live at Fordlândia, he told potential employees, and enjoy steady, profitable work in tropical paradise. The prefabricated industrial town was established near the city of Santarém, Brazil as a rubber factory to make tires for his booming car company, so Ford could avoid reliance on British rubber (sourced in Malaysia.) But there were problems right from the start. The land was rocky and infertile, and Ford failed to hire managers that knew how to work it or had any idea how to avoid problems like blight and pests in a rubber tree plantation.

Few Americans were actually convinced to go, especially since Ford forbade women, alcohol and tobacco within the town limits. Indigenous workers weren’t thrilled about being given hamburgers to eat and American-style accommodations, and they weren’t exactly treated well. On top of all that, Ford never even stepped foot on the plantation.

Then, in 1945, synthetic rubber became available. The whole Fordlâlndia project was nixed without ever producing an ounce of rubber for the company, the structures left behind in the jungle. The decaying town included a hospital, power plant, library, hotel, golf course and dozens of employee houses, some of which are still standing. Ford lost over $ 200 million in today’s money on the enterprise.

Skyscraper Slum: Edificio Sao Vito

Abandoned Brazil Edificio Sao Vito 1

Abandoned Brazil Edificio Sao Vito 2

From the time it was built in 1959 until it finally came down in 2011, Edificio São Vito was the city of São Paulo’s largest vertical slum. Referred to by locals as Treme-Treme (shiver-shiver), the 27-story structure was initially meant to provide cheap and efficient accommodations for students, professionals, immigrants and travelers, with 624 apartments measuring about 300 square feet each. But by the 1980s, those apartments were split into multiple units to accommodate thousands upon thousands of low-income inhabitants. There was no trash or sewer service, so waste was simply dumped out the windows. The building turned into one big death trap once one of the three elevators stopped working, and as crime rose, residents began to  leave in droves. It stood virtually abandoned for years until officials finally demolished it.

Deserted Elevator Shaft Hides Single-Room Street Museum

15 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ]

pop up micro museum

Like so many secret spaces of New York City, this one-room exhibit space (hidden inside an abandoned elevator) is not exactly on the beaten path.

nyc museum peep holes

This pop-up project is naturally camouflaged, set behind a pair of rusted metal doors along an inconspicuous alley between a pair of dull gray block walls. Only a few small rectangular punched openings suggest that something might lurk beyond the black steel.

nyc one room exhibit

Behind its unmarked entry lies a surprisingly pristine white room lined with red-padded shelves. These in turn support an array of contents, many of which city dwellers may find strangely familiar.

nyc everyday object museum

The Elevator Museum‘s collection sports a sampling of everyday urban objects, from discarded coffee cups and potato chip bags to tip jars, found dollar bills and losing lottery tickets.

nyc worlds smallest museum

The exhibits rotate, however, between temporary pieces and a permanent collection featuring some seriously unique and one-off objects. The latter includes the shoe infamously thrown at President George W. Bush during a televised 2008 press conference.

nyc elevator shaft museum

The museum founders Alex Kalman, and brothers Benny and Josh Safdie “want [the] museum to relay the intimate stories behind strange, colloquial items, finding beauty in absurdity.” To construct their secret museum, ”the team gutted the shaftway [at the ground floor] and renovated it to include lighting and shelving.”

nyc elevator museum gift shop

It has operating hours, but like most things in NYC, it is worth dropping by any time of the day or night: “Glass peepholes at the door allow passersby to marvel at the collectibles 24/7, and for those visitors who miss the museum’s opening hours, a toll free hotline has been developed that relays information about each exhibited artifact via phone. The 60 square-foot, free museum also accommodates a cafe and shop. It is a fitting microcosm of the essence of New York City, an unusual myriad of characters, quirks, and curiosities congregating in extremely small spaces.”
