Magic Carpets: Kaleidoscopic Medieval Castle Transformation

Step through the door of an ancient castle in Southern Italy and find yourself transported to an otherworldly, psychedelic scene as the floor flutters and shifts in mesmerizing patterns of color and light. Artist Miguel Chevalier transformed Castel Del Monte, an Italian castle built in 1240, for an interactive digital installation of altered medieval tapestries for a project called ‘Magic Carpets.’

Not only does the light projected onto the floor of the church move with the music in biomorphically-inspired patterns, it reacts to the movements of the visitors as they pass through the space. “This world of colors and shapes in movement takes us, as in a giant kaleidoscope, on an imaginary, poetic voyage,” says Chevalier.

The shapes shift from geometric pixelated patterns taken from traditional Italian mosaic work to lava-like swirls as unsettling music plays in the otherwise darkened space. Seen from the windows in the upper floors of the church, the display is even more dramatic, but the best way to experience the installation is without a doubt to immerse yourself at ground level, enjoying the feeling of the floor seeming to move underneath you.

Most Massive Murals: 14 Large-Scale Works of Urban Art

Human faces loom over the city on the sides of skyscrapers, colorful characters cover industrial silos and Boeing airplanes and entire neighborhoods serve as canvases for optical illusions in some of the world’s largest-scale murals. Taking up hundreds of thousands of square feet in some instances, these massive works of urban art required an astonishing amount of paint to produce.

Believed to be the world’s largest mural, this project in Berlin measures as astonishing 236,800 square feet and consists of imagery inspired by the nature in a nearby zoo. Completed by the French mural company CiteCreation, the work spans three buildings of an apartment complex and appears to significantly best the current Guinness World Record holder, the 178,200-square-foot Pueblo Levee Mural Project in Colorado.

Tribute to Architect Oscar Niemeyer by Eduardo Kobra

Nearly the entire height of a skyscraper in Sao Paulo, Brazil pays colorful tribute to architect Oscar Niemeyer in honor of what would have been his 105th birthday. Muralist Eduardo Kobra completed the 170-foot-tall work of art in early 2014 with the help of four other artists.

It took 1,200 cans of spray paint to complete this incredible mural on the outside of an entire Boeing 737. Brothers Otavio and Gustavo Pandalfo, known as Os Gemeos, painted their signature yellow characters on the plane that carried the Brazilian national football team during the World Cup, completing the project in just a week.

Shepard Fairey’s 14-Story Paris Mural

Known best for his iconic political portraits, artist Shepard Fairey also works in larger scales, with this 14-story mural in Paris being a notable example. Working in conjunction with Mairie du 13e, Butterfly and Mehdi from Galerie Itinerrance, Fairey completed the mural for a community art project called Street Art 13.

Asia’s Tallest Mural by Hendrik Beikirch

A 230-foot-high building standing in the foreground of Daniel Libeskind’s glimmering Hauendaue i’Park building in Busan, South Korea, this mural by German artist Hendrik Beikirch depicting a fisherman stands as a reminder of the nation’s working class.

Mobile 3D Clay Printer: Whole Houses from Local Mud & Fiber

Easy to disassemble and transport on demand, this 3D-printing solution uses natural materials to build completely stable homes from readily available resources.

Designed by WASP (World’s Advanced Saving Project) and deployed recently at a maker fair in Rome, the Delta device itself is lightweight and can be loaded onto a truck, moved then rebuilt in a matter of hours.

Structurally, the system employs curved walls, arches and domes to create solid buildings that can withstand the test of time. For its source material: dirt, clay and water are fed into the machine, leaving the results to dry naturally in the sun. Other substances like wool can be added to help bind the solution. Architecturally, the designs draw on regional vernaculars.

Part of WASP’s larger goal here is to raise awareness of non-plastic building materials that can be used in 3D printers, all with the same degree of precision found when using plastics. This process has started with demo models and is leveling up to full-scale structures.

As for future endeavors: “the company is in the process of exploring 3D printing implantable ceramics, such as hydroxylapatite, bioglass and aluminium oxide, to create bone implants with the same porous structure as natural bone.”

Yellow Brick Ode: The Mainly Abandoned Land Of Oz Theme Park

Closed since 1980, the Land of Oz theme park only opens for one October weekend annually. The rest of the time it looks like it’s been abandoned 35 years.

Joel Handwerk of Lithium Photo visited the “Creepy Land of Oz” and if anything, he’s understating the oppressive atmosphere of doom and decay that permeates the former theme park. One wonders how the park’s skeleton staff manages to freshen up the place so visitors arriving on the first weekend of October each year don’t immediately turn their cars around and burn rubber in a frenzied effort to escape!

While Handwerk may be better known for his infrared images – what his friends refer to as “those nuclear winter photos” – this choice selection of shots definitely casts the mainly abandoned Land of Oz theme park in a stark and uncritical light.

You read that right: “mainly abandoned”… time for some backstory goodness. The Land of Oz theme park was planned, built and opened in 1970 by Grover Robbins and was situated in the North Carolina ski resort town of Beech Mountain. In related news, North Carolina has (or had) a ski resort. Who knew?

Modular Minimalism: 5-Part Kit to Create Infinite Furniture

Beds, tables, shelves, chairs, couches and loveseats can be created in effectively any configuration using this series of essential elements in all sorts of stacks and arrays.

Created by Austrian designer Matthias Dornhofer, the FREI_RAUM (or: free room/space) system is primarily composed of cushions, wooden legs and plywood platforms as well as a single mobile light.

Aligned in a row, cushioned platforms can create various seating arrangements or even a single-person bed with headboard and footboard. Placed vertically, the same platform elements become a shelving system.

Given the ease of transforming the system, part of the fun is presumably being able to change a room on a whim without much thought, experimenting with various layouts or shifting things around for guests.

The pass-through pegs are set halfway into surfaces above (and/or below) provide additional stability and to obviate the need for connectors, at least in theory – in practice one has to wonder if there is some structural risk in the horizontal direction at these points of connection.

Forgotten Gardens: Crumbling Complex Has a Sinister History

Police reports detail disturbing incidents that have occurred just beyond the stone walls of one of America’s most dramatic forgotten gardens, a mysterious complex full of imported ancient Roman columns in the unlikely location of suburban Yonkers, New York. How much of the sinister history of this place, which has become the stuff of legend over the years, really happened? Was it a hotbed of bizarre occult activity as the locals claim, or is this just a case of Satanic panic?

Perched on a hillside overlooking the Hudson River and sprawling across 43 acres, Untermyer Park (also known as Untermyer Gardens) was first developed between 1899 and 1940 as part of a large private estate. A Grecian-style amphitheater, classical pavilion, Persian Paradise garden and a number of statues were erected by the time owner Samuel Untermyer died, and the gardens passed to the City of Yonkers in 1946.

Decades later, the complex has begun to crumble, with graffiti covering many of the deteriorating stone structures. But it’s more than neglect that gives this place a sense of foreboding: it’s the connection to one of New York’s most brutal serial killers. As the murderer known as Son of Sam taunted police with Satanism-tinged letters during a killing spree targeting young couples, police found the corpses of ritualistically mutilated German Shepherds in the aqueduct south of Untermyer Park.

Years after he was captured in 1977, David Berkowitz claimed that he hadn’t acted alone, pinpointing Untermyer Park as the site of frequent gatherings of the Satanic cult of which he was a member. This claim alone has led to all manner of legends springing up about the park, with locals claiming to hear strange chanting or glimpse the glow of torches in the woods at night.

Is it the truth, or just defensive ramblings from the mind of a killer? It’s hard to say, but Berkowitz’ claims fall into line with the Satanic panic that sprung up in the ’70s and ’80s, blaming supposed secret cults for everything from child molestation to murder. It’s impossible to say exactly what has transpired at Untermyer Park, especially given the gruesome discovery in 1976, but the place definitely still carries a feeling of mystery, especially as its once-grand features continue to decay.

Zombie-Powered Vertical Farm: Post-Apocalyptic Safe House

Strangely sustainable, this towering haven is designed to turn the energy of the undead toward a positive purpose, using zombies to turn a turbine in order to provide both power and water pressure in case of a viral apocalypse.

As part of the Zombie Safe House competition, this Zombie Ranch entry goes above and beyond simply protecting people from risen corpses, turning their lust for blood and brains into a baited trap to keep life going above the ground.

The slow-moving zombies push a twisting turbine that sends water up for drinking and farming on a second story – residents occupy the top level, presumably for an extra layer of safety and to get some distance from the groaning hordes.

A series of spiral staircases and drawbridges provide ways to cut off attacks on each floor as well as a means of lifting the entire structure further skyward to make it less accessible when a swarm wanders through.

Each zombie-resistant tower is designed to be fully self-sufficient so survivors can remain aloft indefinitely, leaving them free to enjoy the end of the world in relative luxury.

Ghosts of the Berlin Wall: 8,000 Glowing Orbs Span 10 Miles

For the 25th anniversary of its fall, this Berlin Wall installation project will illuminate the historical divide between East and West, temporarily recreating the infamous border with balloons on tethers in place of concrete with barbed wire.

The work, titled Lichtgrenze by creators Christopher and Marc Bauder, will go live over the weekend of November 9th for just three days, inviting residents and visitors alike to retrace a path that in many places has been obfuscated by time and intentional attempts to bury the past.

The biodegradable light-filled balloons will then be released in unison at the end of the weekend, floating away with messages attached by those who choose to contribute.

Every 500 feet along the path of the lights there will be historical footage and imagery of what each area was like when the wall was still intact, leading up to its world-watched destruction in 1989.

While there were walls, mines and no-mans-land zones outside of Berlin as well, there is something particularly powerful about the way the boundary impacted Germany’s capital, slicing it brutally through its center, often cutting streets and even buildings in half.

Not Photoshopped: Distorted Images are Actually 3D Objects

This skull is a three-dimensional object that you can hold in your hand, not an image that has been stretched and distorted in Photoshop. It’s one of many visually confusing sculptures by Robert Lazzarini, created in his Brooklyn studio after hours upon hours of research. Lazzarini often smashes objects to see how they change and fall apart before he goes about the process of distorting them with computer modeling and fabricating them anew.

Using bone dust to create his skulls, wood and steel to produce hammers and other materials that are appropriate for recreating the originals, Lazzarini painstakingly crafts each item in an altered form. Previously working with more free-form alterations manually, he now sticks to math for the most accurate results possible, with every detail in scale.

“In terms of subject matter, it’s representational, so people think it’s a type of Pop art,” Lazzarini told Blouin Art Info. “In some ways it is, but I think it really hinges more profoundly on the aftermath of Minimalism… One of the main problems of sculpture for me is its static nature. This kind of animation” [when the object changes as you walk around it] “for lack of a better word, gives the sensation that there’s activity where there really isn’t. It relates back to corporeally navigating something to understand it.”

Touchable Memories: 12 3D-Printed Aids for the Disabled

Increasingly affordable and accessible, 3D printing is enabling the creation of everything from simple straw holders to prosthetic hands for people with disabilities, whose quality of life can be greatly enhanced with a little technology. These 12 creations help the blind visualize memories, allow kids with muscular dystrophy to play video games, and even restore brain function after devastating accidents.

An affordable home printer called the Buccaneer can be used in conjunction with ‘Touchable Memories,’ a software by Pirate3D, to turn photographs into tactile 3D-printed objects. The project allows people who have lost their eyesight or been blind from birth to visualize the memories that were photographed, whether in relief form or as freestanding sculptures.

A little girl suffering from a rare congenital disorder that limits her ability to use her arms now has a ‘magic’ exoskeleton that aids her movement and enables her to lift objects. A team at the duPont Hospital for Children created a wearable 3D-printed plastic jacket that’s lightweight enough to be used by small children. Heavier, larger versions of the robotic exoskeleton are hard to use and expensive to replace as the children grow, but using 3D printing means it’s as simple as adjusting the dimensions on the 3D model and printing a new one.

Most cities aren’t exactly built with wheelchairs in mind, but for a few ramps here and there. Raul Krauthausen of Berlin, who uses a wheelchair full-time due to a genetic bone disorder, had trouble getting around Berlin on his own. Having purchased a 3D printer just for fun, he started envisioning how he could use it to improve his quality of life. The result is a portable, printable wheelchair ramp that’s easy to carry on the back of his chair. Krauthausen put the design up on Thingiverse so others can print their own.

Conditions like muscular dystrophy can weaken the muscles to the point that even using a game controller is too tiring. Tinkerer Caleb Kraft noted that the special controllers marketed to the disabled were grossly overpriced, and decided to come up with his own solution. His 3D-printed creation is not exactly robust enough for most of today’s more complex games, but it allows a child to play Minecraft.
