    • Modify the display to fit your working style, with just the elements you need showing
    • Includes Spry framework, Subversion integration, and even support to build Adobe AIR files
    • Live view lets you check your dynamic and data driven elements right inside Dreamweaver
    Cons
    • Still only checks links on the same site – doesn’t validate external links
    • Very complicated, can be intimidating to novices

    Guide Review – Adobe Dreamweaver CS4

    Dreamweaver CS4 is still the editor of choice for freelancers and corporate Web designers alike, and this release just makes it more useful. As with CS3, Dreamweaver CS4 has strong integration with Flash, Photoshop, and Fireworks. But now there are some new elements as well:

    • Photoshop smart objects
      These act just like images inside of Dreamweaver, but they are generated from the Photoshop original PSD. So any time you edit it in Photoshop, you can get it updated in Dreamweaver. And if you resize the image in Dreamweaver, you can get an optimized version for that size from the original.
    • Subversion integration
      If you work on a team, you will want the ability to check-in and check-out files and have the strong version control that Subversion offers. And Dreamweaver CS4 integrates directly with Subversion.
    • Extended Spry framework support
      If you weren’t sure how to use the Spry framework in CS3, now you’ll really like it in CS4. Now you can use existing HTML pages as your data sets and the framework even comes with some of the more popular uses pre-built for you.
    • Author Adobe AIR applications
      Dreamweaver CS4 now supports writing Adobe AIR stand-alone applications that run on the desktop.

  • hand coloring in lightroom

    I’ve always loved hand-colored photos.   They have such a great look, very unique, very interesting.  For those who don’t know, “hand coloring” refers to any process where a photographer uses pigment, dye or paint of some sort to manually add color to a black and white photo.   Historically this was done in the 1800s by photographers using pigment and gum arabic on daguerreotypes!  The technique persisted in one  form or another throughout the years until it was supplanted by actual color photography.  Of course, just because it is no longer necessary to get color in such a way doesn’t mean it can’t be used for asthetic effect.

    I shoot a lot of black and white film, which I generally scan and process in lightroom rather than wet printing.  Now if you’ve used lightroom, you are probably familiar with the brush tools for things like exposure, clarity or even skin smoothing.  However, the oft overlooked “tint” option can be used to easily paint in color to a black and white image for a “hand colored” effect.

    This was shot on film (with a holga!) during a vintage pin-up shoot.  In other words, there is no actual color information in the file etc…

    Now I’m going to hand color it to approximate the actual colors of the scene.  First we start by going into the lightroom brush tools.  Make sure all the adjustment sliders are set to zero (we are just painting on color here, not adjusting the photo itself)   Click on the tint box at the bottom right to bring up the color picker.

    A little trick with the color picker is that if you hold the mouse button down you can drag the eyedropper out of the little selection window and  sample color from *anything* on screen.  One useful trick with this is to have a “reference photo” open separately and sample your colors for hand coloring from that.

    Since the couch in this shot was a green color, I grab a nice rich green and begin painting my mask.  I find it more accurate to paint with the red overlay on (click “O” to toggle the overlay on or off).  You’ll want to use a separate mask for each area of color.  Here’s the green mask for the couch all done.

    yeah, it’s not perfect, but close enough :-)

    I then do separate masks for her shirt (pink) and her skin.   With hand coloring, I like to leave a portion of the image uncolored which gives it it’s signature b/w+color look, different from “selective coloring”

    Now this may be kind of a “niche” technique, and certainly not suited for all photos but it’s quick and easy and yields a very unique effect.  Overall it’s a nice trick to have in one’s toolbox.

    Wie ihr ja bereits wisst, versuchen wir (Hannes, Holger und Steffen) zusammen mit euch allen den Blogbetrieb auf kwerfeldein.de während Martins Abwesenheit aufrecht zu erhalten, was keine leichte Aufgabe für uns ist.

    Umso mehr freuen wir uns über die zahlreichen Angebote für Gastartikel und möchten uns für die tolle Unterstützung bei allen Autoren bedanken! Um mit Martins Worten zu reden: “Ihr rockt!” 😉

    Heute ist Sonntag, und Sonntags sind die browserfruits auf kwerfeldein.de inzwischen schon zur Institution geworden. Natürlich können wir jetzt keine so beeindruckende Linksammlung aus dem Ärmel schütteln, wie Martin sie sonst jede Woche liebevoll sammelt und recherchiert.

    Da wir die browserfruits aber diese Woche nicht ausfallen lassen wollen und von der großen Unterstützung von Eurer Seite so begeistert sind, haben wir uns überlegt, heute gemeinsam die besten Fotografie-Links der vergangenen Woche zu sammeln. Martin hat das ganze in den vergangenen Monaten bereits zwei mal getestet, und es waren immer wieder großartige Links dabei.

    Also: Zeigt allen eure neusten Entdeckungen, die ihr bei den Streifzügen durch Netz gemacht habt. Das können Fotos, Blogartikel, Podcastfolgen, Videos, Nachrichten oder was auch immer sein – Hauptsache, es hat etwas mit Fotografie zu tun. Aber ihr kennt das ja schon. Falls nicht:

    Wie geht das?

    Hinterlasst einfach einen Kommentar mit maximal drei Links zu interessanten Seiten mit Bezug zur Fotografie und erklärt kurz, um was es sich auf den Seiten handelt. HTML ist dabei erlaubt, ihr könnt das Ganze also schön verpacken, wenn ihr wollt. Wer keine Lust auf HTML hat, kann (um Platz zu sparen) lange URLs über Shortener wie is.gd verkürzen.

    Wichtig dabei ist aber, dass niemand selbstreferenziell Links auf seine eigenen Blogs, Flickrstreams oder sonstige Sachen postet. Aber das versteht sich ja eigentlich von selbst, oder?
