FashionPhotographyBlog.com caught up with Photo of The Week winner, Kikomo.p who won her week with the theme “Allure”. Not only is Kikomo.p a published and exhibited photographer, she is also a music video director. Located in Chicago, Illinois, she was classically trained in film making though her photography has been mainly self-taught. Her distinct, creative style makes her visual works striking, emotive and thought provoking, and emotive. Passionate about her craft, the photographer is dedicated to her projects from their conception to their completion.
The photographer founded her business, Kikomo.p Imagery in 2010. It has served markets in Orlando, New York and Chicago, as a visual media service that generates captivating and iconic visual images for brands and artists, with a focus around portrait and fashion photography. However, how did it all began? According to Kikomo.p it all started back in her days of school, as she explained “got involved in photography while in film school. Photography was an affordable way to practice everything I learned in school on a still medium and it also had a faster turn-around time.
Fashion photography specifically was something I had always admired. The images on the magazine covers on newsstands always would stop me in my tracks and make me pay attention so I wanted to create something that would inspire other people as well.”
I asked the photographer, what makes the Kikomo.p touch? How does she define her style? She broke it down for me and detailed that “What is unique about my photographic style is that I seek inspiration from art, history, pop culture and my own imagination. The world gives me a lot to draw from. I have an excellent understanding of style and detail ranging from hair, to nails, to make-up, to clothing, to location. I give great direction to my models to get an amazing performance out of them. My technical knowledge of lenses and lighting help a great deal too.”
Speaking of inspiration, I had to ask Kikomo how she came up with the imagery for her winner’s photo in her round of the Photo of the Week competition. She revealed that “The inspiration of my winning photograph came from 90s European era of high fashion. The style of the hair, the mood of the lighting, even the attitude all reminded me very much of that era when Tyra Banks first came on the fashion scene.” Kikomo said that she shot this picture using her Nikon D90, 50mm f/1.8 lens, 2 soft boxes and a reflector.
