Sony Alpha a57 Review

I take a look at Sony’s replacement for the a55, the a57 which upgrades the cameras features and useability to satisfy mid level enthusiasts. The new auto portrait framing mode and clear image zoom borrowed from the Sony cyber-shot cameras make its debut on the a57 also making it a more fun featured camera for many photographers. The Sony a57 would be the best option for sports as it can continuously autofocus and do it effectively whereas the Canon 650D whilst good, won’t be able to do as good a job as the a57.

Which is best for video (mainly sports), Sony a57 or Canon Eos 650D/T4i with SSM lens ?

Cool video, is the video save as what file extension .avi? .mov? .mpg? what software do you use to convert the extension video to be viewable to youtube?

Not a problem, I understood =.) Yes it is possible. You have the option to choose from 10, 8 and 3 frames per second and you will also be able to use the live view during burst capture.

I’ve got two questions… can you lower the “burst capturing” to less than 12 fps and be able to take more pics for more seconds? And is it possible to have live view while “burst capturing”?
sorry for bad english. Im from Sweden.

Good review mate ! I’ve been subscribing to this channel for a while, I only just realized though that you only review Sony cameras ! Not complaining, it is just funny that I only just noticed. By the way does Sony loan you the cameras to review? Thanks.

I would recommend the a65. To me the higher resolution viewfinder is worth the jump.

sony SLRs suck, although i got one anyway lol mainly because I wanted to use it with the 500mm f8 mirror lens since the opteka ones aren’t so good and don’t have autofocus.

To turn it off you have to switch the lens to manual focus but if you want to have autofocus still you may have to get a lens that has a super sonic motor (SSM) like the 16-50mm f2.8.

John, is there a way to turn off the Autofocus sound, or just the Autofocus, when shooting movies?

  19. John Sison Avatar
    John Sison

It really depends on what you intend to photograph but many people usually get the 50mm f1.8 because its a cheap and sharp lens.

Thank you very much for the advice John! I decided not to go with any of these lenses. I am going to save up for the 18-270, but a friend who already bought that lens, lets me borrow her 55-200 sony lens in case I’d need a bit of zoom. It’s a good temporary solution. Thanks for the great reviews, please keep them coming!

With the a57 you are getting manual controls for video mode, a more flexible and higher resolution LCD screen and a bigger body. It really depends what you want in the camera but for me that would be enough reason to get the a57. If you’re on a budget, the a37 is still more than capable of capturing great footage.

i liked your video a lot, and i found it really usefull!!!! thanks a lot, im thinking of buying the alpha 37 or 57!! do you think is worth paying more for the a57???? i use video a lot, and the 60fps of a37 and continuous auto focus would be perfect!!! thanks and please answer

The a57 is a good camera to go get unless you want a higher resolution electronic viewfinder or a 24 megapixel sensor. This actually has slightly better low light performance than the a65. Its a good all round camera and I would highly recommend it!

Great tutorial! The other tilt shift tutorials I’ve watched have just a straight area across the middle that is in focus, which I wasn’t quite happy with the outcome. I much prefer yours, where you have more control over what is in focus. Thanks so much for explaining this so simply too! xx
