It depends on your own tolerance. It definitely makes a distinct higher-pitched motor noise when auto-focusing, so if you need to be able to take photos in extremely quiet settings then it may become an issue.

You can always close the aperture a bit for those group shots. I own this lens (the non-VC version) and love it–it has become my walk-around lens. The option of opening up the aperture to f/2.8 allowed me to take some WONDERFUL low-light, indoor shots on my vacation this summer.

Would this lens be suitable for taking group photos where the subject would be 3 of 4 deep? Or Is the depth of field to narrow

I’ve got this lens, used it once on my old Nikon D80 for a wedding, daytime focusing was great, but night time, indoor (indoor lighting), the focusing was a bit off. Even thought it was focused on the people, some of the photos turned out to be out of focus. weird…
but I do use this photo for the local paper and its great for $350 or so dollars. value for money. But I do admit the Nikon or Canon 17-55mm is much faster in focus and a bit sharper.

Great Review, Considering getting a new lens, either taunt between this lens or a fixed sigma 30mm 1.4, however I’d rather use this one as it has more zooming options, thanks!
