Went for a quick stroll in the neighbourhood to test out the night time / low light performance. One thing i noticed is that the LCD is much more grainy than the actual video, which is incredibly clean at iso1600 and even 3200. I didnt have to go to iso3200, but with a slower lens, it would have been no problem to do so. I also have a BW circ. polariser on front, which takes back about 1.5 stops. Settings: – 1080p30, 24mbps – 1/60, iso800-1600, 24mm, f1.4, 0ev, BW Circ. Polarizer (-1.5 stop) – Sony NEX-5N, ECM-SST1, Nikkor 24/1.4G, cheapo tripod

What mic?
Easy fix for the overheating issue is to remove the sticker under the screen and keep the screen out when recording video. Behind the sticker is airvents blocked by it so it can’t dissipate heat

yea, the 24/1.8 was designed for NEX bodies, it wil definitely AF (although, i never use AF for video).
the polarizer isnt necessary. with the f1.4 aperture and wideangle, my shutter speeds would exceed 1/8000 on my d700 in normal daylight.. i use the polarizer to bring that down to a reasonable shutter speed. it also helps with reflections and colour saturation. when i use it on my 5n, im just too lasy to take it off.

1/ does ” native e-mount” guarantee that a lens is fully compatible with the 5N’s Autofocus functionality ?
2/ About the Polarizer filter used when capturing your footage. What was it’s purpose ? I noticed that when shooting into light sources such as car headlight beams; the picture didn’t go all contrasty. was it the polarizer that kept those shots evenly lit ?
i shoot with an FF nikon kit, so, thats the only reason i use the 24/1.4.. i would never buy it just for the NEX. for alternatives, there is the native e-mount Zeiss 24/1.8 or 16/2.8. there are more options if you go third party, like the Tokina 11-16/2.8, Nikon 28/1.8, etc. you dont need a huge aperture because your shutter speeds are generally lower for video, i was around iso1600 and actually had a polariser.. so i could have easily shot at iso800.
I searched “Nikkor 24/1.4G”. the price was around $2000. Is there a cheaper wide angle lens that mounts on this camera, and still performs well in low light ?
Its when filming long shots, like 15 minutes in a row, 20 minutes in a row etc that the camera dares to shut down

I Myself bought the nex-5 for my holiday to the west-coast.
I bought 3 battery’s and it kept on working, yes it became warm but never overheated, even in Vegas after filming and taking pictures a whole day.
So I guess it’s not the entire product line that suffers from this fault.
agreed but for a snatch and grab this video even on youtube kicks the crap out of Nikon and Canons offers. Now if they had XLR inputs for sound it would kill the market but you could always mount a beachtek for sound.
Just wanted to add that the NEX-5N overheats easily regardless of ambient temperature. I was shooting all day long at -10 degrees Celsius outside this winter and I couldn’t get more than 10min of footage without getting the temperature warning on the camera. My hands were frozen stiff, so my question is what the *&^% is wrong with this camera – how can it overheat in -10 degrees ( temperature which is lower than its minimum operational spec) ?
if i were doing professional video, i would be looking at the FS100 at minimum.. the 5n is fine for messing around and home videos, but, its not meant to be a pro video camera.
Thanks alot. I was planning on using this to shoot a low budget feature movie. The overheating during video dosent sound good, even though the image is the best Ive seen on a dslr.
for video, the camera does overheat and will shut down during video. but, it depends on the ambient temp and it will save your video, so you wont lose it entirely. before taking it home, take the 5n out of the box and make sure it doesnt click.

ive played it as a 24mbps file on my hdtv, its pretty good… but, im not examining it for grain. maybe the fs100 is a better option? its base iso is 800!
Have you watched this on your tv and not computer monitor? How is the grain level?
its an AFS lens, so no aperture ring. the adapter has a crude, manual ring that controls the aperture tab on AFS lenses.. you can stop it down, but, its not very precise.
Looks great, does the nikkor have an aperture ring so you can stop it down or do you just have to shoot wide open??
im using Sony Vegas 10 Pro. the nex records 16:9 natively.. so, theres no resizing necessary (although, you could if you wanted to). its a great camera for video, except it overheats in room temperature (which isnt too big a deal for me).
not sure what you mean by feedback from the mic… i just put the mic on set the 90/120 switch, and record.. not doing anything else.
hi thanks for posting, i was wondering which pogram you use to compact or resize your video so it still has the awesome hd look and quality…to put it on youtube. like, how do you keeo the quality crystal clear when you are transfering it to youtube. i am thinking about buying this, camera, are you well pleased with your decision
