This Chrome extension makes Instagram ‘likes’ visible again

Over the past several months, Instagram has steadily removed publicly visible ‘likes’ from content posted on its platform, a decision that has polarized users. As the company explained earlier this year, hiding ‘likes’ removes the competitive feel from the platform, encouraging users to focus on the content, not how many people are engaging with it. A new Web browser extension changes that.

Called ‘The Return of Likes,’ this new Chrome extension enables users to view like and comment counts on images when browsing Instagram using a Web browser. ‘Instagram has stopped displaying the number of likes and comments in some areas,’ developer Socialinsider explains, ‘[and] that makes the life of a Social Media person very complicated so we thought about lending a hand.’

‘The Return of Likes’ extension is available in the Chrome Web Store now; it doesn’t appear to be available for any other Web browsers at this time.

Analog revival rolls on: Rollei Vario Chrome slide film coming soon

Dear film photographers! Rollei Vario Chrome 135-36 is a medium to high-speed color reversal film that is intended for photography under low-level daylight illumination or under other light sources using proper filtration. Rollei Vario Chrome has a medium degree of sharpness, its image results are characterized by a slightly visible grain and a warmish image tone. As the name of the film suggests it has a broad exposure latitude from 200 to 400 ISO (DX coded at 320 ISO). If you intend to project the slides we suggest to shoot the film at 200 ISO whereas 320-400 ISO is preferable for scanning applications. Pre-sale will start next week on Monday July 3rd. We expect the supplies to arrive in week 28 so that we’ll be able to start shipping between July 10th and 14th. We hope you’ll like the film as much as we do and thank you all for the support.

Well this is some unexpected, but exciting news: German photography shop and producer of Rollei-branded film, Maco Direct, has announced Rollei Vario Chrome 135-36. It’s an ISO 320 color reversal film stock with medium sharpness and a warm tone, which sounds perfect for grey Seattle days.

That brings the count to four new, reformulated or resurrected film stocks that will become available this year. The others include: Kodak Ektachrome, Ferrania P30 b/w film, and a reformulation of LomoChrome Purple 400 film. Not to mention Lomography also announced three new single-use cameras and German film maker ADOX announced it will doubled the size of its film plant. All this means more options for analog diehards.

You can pre-order a roll (or more) of Rollei Vario Chrome come July 3rd, and orders will begin shipping as soon as the middle of the month. Of course, it makes some sense to wait and see what images from this new film look like, unless you’re the gambling type. In that case, please share your results as soon as possible.

Fujifilm X-E2 firmware 4.00 brings Classic Chrome and other X-E2S features

It may be over two years old, but that doesn’t mean Fujifilm has given up on the X-E2.

Fujifilm has released its promised firmware update for its X-E2 mid-range mirrorless camera. The firmware update adds a host of feature and operational improvements, including the Classic Chrome film simulation and AF upgrades from the recent X-T models, as well as a revised user interface and multiple Auto ISO settings.

The firmware update for the over two-year-old model continues Fujifilm’s habit of supporting existing users and brings the camera into line with most of the latest X-series models.

The firmware can be downloaded now from the Fujifilm website

The changes are so significant that, rather than publishing an addendum, Fujifilm has released a new version of the camera’s owner’s manual.

Photoshop comes to Chrome OS in limited beta

It appears that Google’s Chromebook laptops are finally getting Photoshop, at least in limited beta at first – starting with US-based Adobe education customers. According to a blogpost on the Google Chrome blog, Adobe Photoshop is now available in a limited beta release for Chromebook. U.S.-based Adobe education customers with a paid Creative Cloud account can apply for access to the program, which provides a streaming version of Photoshop to Chromebook users. Learn more

The “AddThis” extension for Google Chrome lets you easily share content on a variety of services.

[MODIFIED] Google Chrome – View Memory and CPU Usage, Network Activity of Each Tab

Display memory, CPU, network, and other Google Chrome usage details.

For those trying to diagnose computer or networking issues when visiting resource-intensive websites, or just the merely curious, Google Chrome includes a Task Manager. This displays the amount of memory and CPU used by the browser and each tab as well as network activity, process IDs, and for developers the frames per second and ports used to debug native client apps (NaCl debug port). This way, you can determine if a particular webpage is using too many system resources, possibly slowing your computer down.

If you want extra information, a “Stats for nerds” screen shows the memory broken down by private and shared, as well as virtual memory usage. This details screen can even show basic memory usage statistics for other browsers such as Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox….

Access the menu and search boxes at the top of long webpages browsed in Google Chrome with this shortcut button.

When browsing a large web page such as a Wikipedia article or a list of Facebook posts in Google Chrome, if you need to jump back to the top of the page to use the site’s menu, search features, or sign-in boxes, does scrolling take too much time?

While pressing Ctrl + Home immediately jumps to the top of the current web page, not everyone remembers this keyboard shortcut. With the “Scroll to Top” extension, you can add to Google Chrome’s toolbar a red up-arrow that performs this same feat….

For privacy, clear the data Google Chrome stores regarding your browsing history.

Even though Google Chrome supports “Incognito” browsing where history information is not kept and cookies are removed after browsing (press CTRL + SHIFT + N to open an “Incognito” window), you might accidentally forget to use this mode. You might also wish to remember cookies for a few hours while checking e-mail, chatting on social networking, or accessing your bank account online, then later decide to clear your tracks for privacy.
