Video: This DIY ‘$10,000 selfie stick’ holds a cinema camera and boom mic

04 May

Filmmaker, photographer, and self-professed coffee addict Peter McKinnon has created his own rendition of the infamous selfie stick… on steroids. Meet the $ 10,000 Selfie Stick. This fun, gimmicky DIY creation is McKinnon’s upgrade from the much-maligned (and for a time ubiquitous) pole used to hold a smartphone for self-portrait purposes.

In his video of the project, McKinnon heads to the local hardware store where he purchases bolts and other hardware, as well as a pair of goalie sticks for hockey. The sticks are combined together using tape, and the bolts are used to mount a $ 6,000 cinema camera and $ 400 boom mic (and three Canadian flags) onto the sticks.

The end result? A massive, heavy “selfie stick” that outshines anything you can get off the shelf, but has absolutely no practical use.

The RedRock DigiBoom is a gimbal-stabilized camera boom

13 Apr

Cinema and video accessory makers Redrock Micro have teamed up with Disney/ABC Television Group and Disney Research to design and develop the DigiBoom, a handheld gimbal-stabilized camera boom.

The DigiBoom is targeted at solo operators and small production teams who want to add unusual angles and smoothly stabilized footage to news, sports, and event video productions. The DigiBoom lets you place the camera anywhere from ground level to more than 8 feet (243 cm) up; 12 feet (365 cm) with the optional extension.

Redrock Micro says the DigiBoom is ideal for creating sweeping camera moves or unusual points of view. Key Features include complete control of operation and settings for both camera and gimbal from the grip, automated, manual, or hybrid control of camera aim and angle, and professional audio-connections and functions.

Additionally, the device comes with a single power source for camera, DigiBoom, and accessories, and the option to use an external power input. A high-resolution display allows for full-time monitoring. DigiBoom can be used with a wide range of cameras and displays but Redrock Micro recommends the Blackmagic Video Assist and Micro Studio Camera 4K recorder and camera for best performance.

The DigiBoom can be preordered for $ 500 on the Redrock Micro website, where you’ll also find additional product information. Target availability is Summer 2018.

Redrock’s Cinema and Video Product Expertise Brings DigiBoom to Life

Redrock Micro has long been recognized as the premiere innovator for independent production equipment. Over the past decade, Redrock’s original designs and products have made high production value affordable and accessible for any budget level. DigiBoom joins Redrock’s existing family of over 400 rigs, automation, and camera accessories including the Eclipse™ the latest generation of networked camera-top accessories.

“Redrock has empowered small crews and solo operators to punch above their weight class for over a decade,” said James Hurd, President of Redrock Microsystems. “DigiBoom represents this kind of leap forward for location news, sports, and events. When we first saw DigiBoom we recognized this spark of an idea. With Redrock’s product expertise and injection of Eclipse™ technology, we are now delivering a finished product that is ready for the demands of full-time professional production.”

Powered by Technology from Disney

Core DigiBoom technology and associated patents were developed by Disney/ABC Television Group and Disney Research, and licensed to Redrock Micro to bring DigiBoom to market. DigiBoom has been field tested and refined over the past two years in organizations including Disney/ABC, ABC News, Marvel, and continues to be widely used at ESPN for live and recorded sports coverage.

“Over the past two years we have seen DigiBoom deliver tremendous value to Disney/ABC, ESPN and other subsidiaries within the Disney family,” said Anthony Accardo, Director, Research & Development, Disney/ABC Television Group. “Through our collaboration with Redrock, we are really pleased to see DigiBoom come to market and help elevate the state of the art for the industry.”

“DigiBoom gives us a distinctive look – delivering high-quality, cinematic images in a portable and versatile package,” said Brian Kennedy, vice president, Global News Gathering Operations & Planning. “At the 2017 Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C., DigiBoom provided incredible images and was the perfect tool allowing us to be live inside the story. No other tool could have delivered this type of coverage.”

“The Rose Bowl is one of the most beloved and most watched football contests in the US today,” said Lorenzo Lamadrid, ESPN Supervising Director, Rose Bowl. “Our use of DigiBoom for the 2018 Rose Bowl really enhanced the quality of the footage and sharpened the sense of ‘being right there in the action’ for our viewers. DigiBoom worked beautifully to create shots we couldn’t otherwise achieve.”

“DigiBoom allowed our camera operator to access high traffic spaces and deliver angles that wouldn’t have been possible with a traditional camera,” said John Vasallo, Sr. Coordinating Producer for ESPN.

Blackmagic Design Cameras Unlock DigiBoom’s Potential

DigiBoom can be used with any appropriate camera and display. To get the most from DigiBoom, the preferred recorder and camera are the Blackmagic Video Assist and Micro Studio Camera 4K, the world’s smallest broadcast quality live production camera.

The unique connectivity of the Micro Studio 4k Camera’s expansion port gives operators fingertip control over all camera functions directly from the DigiBoom handgrips. The Video Assist offers full-time operator monitoring, recording to internal SD cards and offering SDI pass-through for live broadcast.

“Blackmagic Design’s mission is to empower creative people. When we saw what Redrock and Disney were creating with DigiBoom, we wanted to make sure they could get the most from Blackmagic cameras,” said Grant Petty, CEO and Founder of Blackmagic Design. “We worked together to expand the Micro Studio Camera 4K and designed it to be versatile. It is incredibly exciting to think about how much more creative camera operators will be with DigiBoom, and with the combined solution DigiBoom essentially becomes a single integrated experience for the operator.”

Pricing and Availability

DigiBoom target availability is Summer 2018 and pricing has not yet been announced. In addition to the standalone product, DigiBoom will also be available as a Deluxe Field Broadcast kit and includes the most popular DigiBoom accessories. DigiBoom will be available from Redrock direct and Redrock’s Worldwide Authorized Resellers.

Boom To Busted: Abandoned British Bomb Storage Depots

13 Mar

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

bomb-store-1a

War is over so can we give peace a chance? These abandoned British bomb stores and ammo bunkers are looking peaceful indeed now that the explosives are gone.

bomb-store-1b

bomb-store-1f

The Brits built up their military infrastructure explosively, pardon the pun, before and during the World Wars. Peacetime saw a corresponding deflation with hardened assets such as bomb stores typically abandoned instead of being dismantled.

bomb-store-1c

bomb-store-1d

One such quieted bomb store can be found at RAF Wittering near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, England. Established in 1916 as an base for zeppelin-fighting BE2C and BE12 aircraft, the base was used by the USAAF in World War II and became the “Home of the Harrier” in the 1970s.

bomb-store-1e

After the war, the base’s bomb stores were expanded and toughened to accommodate nuclear weapons. Flickr user Graeme Hutton (graemehutton) visited the disused and derelict bomb stores at the Wittering Ammo Dump in late July of 2014 and snapped dozens of evocative photos.

RAF Chilmark

RAF Chilmark in Wiltshire was built in 1936 and by 1965 it was the RAF’s only remaining ammunition supply depot. The base was shut down entirely in 1995 but it took the better part of two years to clear live ammunition from the site. Flickr user Newage2 visited the base’s bomb store in early February of 2016.

RAF Chilmark also houses a civil defense bunker built in 1985 and sold to private interests in 1997. In February of 2017, a police raid revealed the bunker had been converted to a large-scale marijuana grow-op. “There are approximately 20 rooms in the building, split over two floors, each 200 feet long and 70 feet wide,” stated Detective Inspector Paul Franklin of the Wiltshire Police Dedicated Crime Team. “Almost every single room had been converted for the wholesale production of cannabis plants, and there was a large amount of evidence of previous crops. This was an enormous set up.” Up in smoke, as they say.

RAF Newton

RAF Newton in Nottinghamshire was built in 1939 and closed in the year 2000. The site is gradually being converted into an industrial estate but not without controversy: radioactive contamination from Radium used to paint luminescent dials in the 1940’s has been detected. Flickr user Goldie87 visited disused parts of RAF Newton in late February of 2008.

Infographics 101: Selfie Boom – The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

06 Sep

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock (or just never check social media), you’ve likely heard of, or even participated in, the selfie trend. Although the trend first started back in the MySpace days, things really took off when Apple released the front-facing camera on the iPhone 4 in 2010. Since then, elementary schoolers, teenagers, and young adults alike have Continue Reading

Boom To Bust: 10 Abandoned Fireworks Stores & Stands

01 Sep

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned fireworks store Savannah Georgia
Fireworks sales are “fly by night” on several levels, and when boom turns to bust the colors fade faster than the aftermath of a bombshell in a moon-washed sky.

Take the outstanding image above of an abandoned fireworks stand outside Savannah, Georgia. Flickr user Mike Garde employs HDR to tease every last photon out of the corrugated sheet metal shack helpfully painted in explosive yellow and red by its builders. By the way, is “Cheap Fireworks” really the way to go when purchasing explosive materials intended to entertain one’s loved ones up close & personal? Just wonderin’.

Faded Glory

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Fireworks were invented by the ancient Chinese and Americans have used them to celebrate momentous occasions since, well, since before there even WAS an America. By the looks of it, this long-abandoned wholesale/retail fireworks emporium near, um, Emporia, VA opened its doors not long after John Hancock signed his, er, John Hancock. Kudos to long-time Flickr user Lawrence Beals for capturing the ramshackle edifice in 2006 in all its gritty glory about three years before it was torn down.

Red, White & Blew

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ever since the first shell slammed into Fort Sumter, America’s proud southerners have loved the sight, sound and smell of explosions. The length and breadth of the former Confederacy is crammed with shotgun shacks selling all manner of fireworks – some open, others not. The 5,000-odd residents of Piedmont, Alabama alone have at least a couple of fireworks stands and credit Second Period Industries with capturing a couple of the more patriotically decorated ones for posterity.

Abandoned Fireworks Warehouse Is Where?

abandoned fireworks warehouse

We won’t tell you where this beautifully desolate abandoned fireworks warehouse is because, well, if we (or BrightBird, where its image can be found) did, it likely wouldn’t look as striking as it does thanks to squatters, vandals and taggers. For this moment captured in time, at least, we all can enjoy the sight of Mother Nature’s own fireworks taking back what’s rightfully Hers.

Using a super clamp to mount your Zoom H4n on your boom pole – DSLR FILM NOOB

18 Nov

www.dslrfilmnoob.com Super Clamps are handy little devices. You don’t have to use them with a manfrotto magic arm for them to come in handy. One Great use for them is mounting your zoom h4n. Using the stud that comes with your super clamp you can mount a threaded cold show adapter rcm.amazon.com or threading it into the super clamp stud: rcm.amazon.com Either way provide you with a great way to mount your zoom h4n to your boom pole. The zoom h4n is light enough that you wont be over taxed by the extra weight, and with the multiple mounting options on a super clamp you could always mount a wireless transmitter/receiver to send audio out or bring it in from other sources. When i have to operate the boom mic from long distances I often attach a wireless transmitter to send my audio back to the camera. That way my 7d has a good solid sync track for dualeyes to work with. Equipment used in this video: Canon t2i canon 35mm f1.4 Zoom h4n Cowboy super clamp and manfrotto super clamp Sennheiser g2 wireless transmitter
