3 Minutes with Portrait Photographer Alex Huff

02 Feb

The beauty of portrait photography is that it is as diverse as its subjects and often takes its cues from traditional paintings. One photographer who has found such inspiration is Alex Huff who is today’s guest on “3 Minutes with…” .

Butterfly Tattoo

Describe your photography in 100 words or less

My photography style strives to depict simple beauty with some influence from Dutch Golden Age paintings. The purpose of this particular collection is to showcase individual tattoos in the same frame as the objects and subjects they are designed after. This has allowed my models to revisit symbols that influenced them to get their ink in the first place. My goal is to photograph tattoos in a way that is true to their natural colors and gives them the same life and depth as the items they represent. I describe this process as my “tattoography”.

What gear/software do you use?

I use the Nikon D800 DSLR, 24-70mm f/2.8 & 85mm f/1.4 lenses, Elinchrom D-Lite monoheads, and SB-910 flashguns. My favorite modifiers are the Elinchrom 39″ Deep OctaBox, the Photoflex Extra Small OctoDome with eggcrate, and the Westcott 7′ parabolic umbrella. I edit almost entirely in Adobe Lightroom.

What’s one quick tip that you’d give people interested portraiture photography?

My quick tip to portrait photographers would be to constantly reassure your model, especially while “chimping” or checking your monitor. As an occasional model myself, I understand how discouraging it is to witness a quiet, grimacing photographer behind the lens. Keep it lively, even if you are panicking inside. I also highly recommend letting models see their images halfway through a shoot and don’t be afraid to take their suggestions.

What three photography sites or photo blogs do you recommend?

Strobist – this blog always reminds me that lighting is creative and doesn’t have to be complicated.
Juxtapoz – they tend to feature a lot of tattoo photography which helps me keep up with how other people approach that subject.
The Unprofessional Photographer – This is my unconventional go-to. Sometimes you just gotta laugh. (Editor’s note: warning may contain crude or x-rated content, visit at your own risk!)

Meet The Photographers Who Write For Digital Photography School ~ Alex Smith

10 Mar

You’ve been reading their articles for months or years, have you ever wondered “Who are the photographers who write for dPS”? Today we meet Alex Smith, another of the newer writers brought on to dPS last year.

Boston Trip_043010_0352(sRGB-websize)

1.) How long have you been shooting?

I have been shooting for the past 7 years in some way, shape or form.

Self Portrait-17(sRGB-websize)2.) Do you have a full time job or are you a full time photographer?

Photography for me is a hobby that has gotten out of control. I am not a full time photographer and spend my days as a member of one of the scariest, most fear-inducing professions in the world. I work as a dentist.

3.) If you had to limit yourself to one genre of photography, what would it be and why?

This is a tough one. I really enjoy all aspects of photography and love to push myself into the different genres as I find I always learn something new. If I had to limit myself though, it would be to conceptual portrait/fashion photography. I love pushing my own creativity and it is a blast to come up with an idea and see it through to the final image. Not to mention you get to meet a lot of great people with which to collaborate and create.

4.) When did you start writing for dPS and why?

I am new to dPS as of Oct/Nov 2012. I applied to write for dPS because I feel that I have learned a great deal from the site. I wanted to be able to give back to the site by contributing and communicating what I have learned to others. Also, I hoped to be a good motivational factor and example for all the other self taught hobbyists out there that are working hard to learn photography.

5.) What do you shoot with and what’s your favorite lens?

I started with a Nikon D80 and moved to a Nikon D3s a few years ago. Really, my favorite lens is whatever is on my camera, but if forced to choose it is likely the Nikon 24-70 mm f/2.8. It is extremely versatile and I find that it is on my camera most of the time.

6.) What would be your number one tip to any new photographer?

My number one tip to anyone starting out in photography is not to let fear rule you. This is a craft and skill that takes time to learn and you should approach it as something that you will be continuously learning more about. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, try new things and get out of your comfort zone. You have to practice and make errors to get better and you can’t let all your blunders stand in the way of your progress. Just remember that all photographers start at the same point…the beginning. Don’t be ashamed of your skill or progress and just continue to work at areas you feel you need to improve.

7.) What’s your next big project?

Currently, I am working on a series of themed or conceptualized portraits in collaboration with a local make-up artist. I have been getting into more styling and planning with each shoot and am excited to see where these shoots are heading.

8.) Where can people go to find out more about you and your work?

You can find out plenty about me here on dPS and also at www.shutterhogs.com which is an ongoing project that I am trying to develop with a colleague. Also, I am on Twitter as @shutterhogs and my portfolio can be seen at 500px.com/alexsmith88.

Chai Lifeline’s Camp Simcha Special: (Alex) Avi’s Wish Fulfilled

10 Jan

campsimcha.org | http After a fantastic Camp Simcha Special summer experience, Alexander (aka Avi) was about to board a plane back to Tampa, FL when Chai Lifeline made his dream come true. Sam Zaks showed up with a brand new Nikon D90, a gift from Chai Lifeline and an anonymous donor who met him last week during a visit to camp. Alexander had been a budding photographer until his accident two years ago, and the camera will allow him get back in the game on a new level. He was clearly moved when presented with the gift outside the Continental Airlines terminal at Newark Airport, and was ecstatic to be sharing the moment with his counselor and friends. As the video shows, he could not stop smiling as the group crowded around him, singing and cheering in true Camp Simcha Special EPIC ’11 fashion. Many thanks to Avi’s counselors, Yoni Burstyn & Yaakov Avigdor, for initiating this wonderful surprise. Each summer, 400 seriously ill children are treated to unforgettable, medically supervised overnight camp experiences at Camp Simcha, for children battling cancer and other hematological illnesses, and Camp Simcha Special, for children with debilitating chronic conditions. At Camp Simcha and Camp Simcha Special, children and teens trade hospital rooms and doctors’ offices for fun, friendship, and hope for the future. 365 Days of Alex Stoddart

16 Nov

Most of Alex’s works are self-portraits, but one can’t notice a shade of narcissism or self-admiration. Here Alex-model and Alex-photographer are joined in an ideal creative tandem, where participants literally can understand each other without words. Daily I’m watching Flickr of Alex, to see what will take my breath away today. In every photo you can find things that are Continue Reading

Excellent short! Kinda reminds me the SAMURAI JACK style (especially the episodes with mercenaries/pirates/thugs), if you know what I mean… So, tonight we’ll rock with the rocking vikings on their boat. Feel free to sing along, even thought there are no lyrics: you can always improvise something. Jason Forrest is an electronic music producer known for noisy experimental electronica and breakcore. Until 2004 he recorded under the name Donna Summer. He created the record label Cock Rock Disco to release his own recordings. (Source: Wikipedia) War Photographer is featured on his album Shamelessly Exciting, released in October 2005. As I said, the author of the video is Joel Trussell. He’s currently represented by Abacus and One Small Step.
