it doesnt have 4k output. dynamic range is about 11-12 stops max i read somewhere. it records 4:2:0 mpeg2, not so interesting, im afraid, at 50mbps.

I’m sure the 1080p is fantastic, it’s 2×2 binned and can be recorded as something like RAW video (am I right on that?), but how is the 4k? I think it’s recorded as M-JPEG, what sort of dynamic range does it have, can it be graded, does it have artefacts?

Wow wow calm down man. There is a difference, you just have to know them to understand them. And yes 20k is a lot, but still, it is better than the 5D in many ways. And digital revolution isn’t just about affordability. Of course there’s that, but it is also about efficiency. Look the Epic is digital but isn’t cheap at all. It’s been great success because it is easier to play around with and edit, etc. than film camera. And still cheaper.

@viniciusb lastly, not trying to be an ass..just stating some facts with my experience with the D5 and people on here asking why bother spending over $2500. D5 has it’s limitation. I own both the first and second generation model myself and use it for nature photography stills and fits those needs. As for pay rate, hell if I can find a DP that owns an epic, alexa or F35 and willing to work for $1500 a day, that’s more money going into my own pocket…..=)

you’re right about the finding a “good” dp/director. don’t matter what they’re using when they’ve built themselves an impressive resume. But..case in point, we just wrapped up shooting a national pizza chain commercial. Hired 2 owner operators. One was a D5 and the other an epic. 2 days of shooting, D5 operator god paid $3500 and Epic got paid $18,000. If you come across a dp owner of an epic, alexa or F35 willing to work for $1500 a day, by all means send them my way

5D can only record 12 minutes of video at a time before you have to let the sensors cool down..it is first a digital photo camera…recording video was just an added feature…5D has no sdi or hdmi out except for monitoring to record to external recorders…go bid into a studio project with a 5D as a main camera and you’ll be looking at $500 to $1500 per day..walk in with a $50,000 cinema camera…your salary starts at least $100,000 and up depending on complexity of project…

’cause people know what is the difference between a 5D and this, but you don’t?

It is $9.750 by the way. And it will not work because you have no Redmag (SSD drive, 1.800$), no viewfinder (3.200$) or monitor (1.600$), no station to put the recording on your computer (250$), no battery and charger (320$).
So lets ad the prices and it comes to … 16.920$.
I’d still get the Red though, but don’t compare the uncomparable.

When it comes down to it the 5d is still a static image tool and this is a digital cinema tool. One of the biggest advantages it that the PL version will accept cinema lenses without a mod so pulling focus is much more natural to a seasoned puller and the series of complementary cinema lenses comes geared for standard follow focus, and proper T-Stops and Distance Marks so you can calculate exact pulls. I hate setting my F-stop in the camera. But with the RED coming in at 9K I’ll stay RED.

@BL4NDY
Thank you for contacting the E-Mail Sales Department at B&H Photo Video and Pro Audio.
With the Nikon D5100 you can set the lens to manual mode and shoot video. That is not an issue at all.
Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.
Thank you, we appreciate your business.

Great Camera for sure. Only drawback, as I later discovered, poor audio recording in loud environments…further there’s no Audio input. Does anyone know a way to record and synch better audio with the D5000?

I bought one about 6 months ago and I love it. I like to experiment with timelapse and HD video so this camera satisfies all my creative needs. I didn’t like the kit lens though. It’s not that great so I replaced it with the 16-85mm VR-II which costs about as much as the camera itself but it’s wel worth it.
Checkout some of my work with the D5000 on my channel.

Just to correct the guy. It’s not the first DSLR to have a vari-angle screen, Olympus made the first one. Nonetheless, this camera is still way better then that Olympus haha.
