GoPro and VSCO lay off employees, change business models over COVID-19 pandemic

Amid ongoing social distancing efforts, both VSCO and GoPro have announced major business changes resulting from the economic downturn. In a post on his LinkedIn account, VSCO CEO Joel Flory revealed that his company had to lay off 45 employees this week. The announcement was followed by a similar message from GoPro, which revealed that it will be reducing its number of employees by 20%.

Many companies are struggling to stay above water as a number of states and countries implement lockdown measures. Many businesses have been forced to temporarily close down, and while others remain in business, a drop in consumer purchasing has left some companies struggling to keep their revenue up.

In a post on his LinkedIn account, Flory said that VSCO had expected 2020 to be ‘a year where we would continue to forward invest into our business.’ However, things didn’t go as planned and Flory said, ‘Overnight our environment changed. We realize that we would need to shift towards running a self-sustaining business.’

The company is giving its laid-off employees a minimum of two months of healthcare coverage and seven weeks of severance pay, according to Flory, who says that the company is also assisting them in other ways. VSCO plans to continue releasing new features this year, though details on what the company has planned weren’t revealed.

GoPro, meanwhile, published its preliminary Q1 financial requests on April 15 and withdrew its 2020 guidance in light of the pandemic. The company said that it is restructuring its business model to focus on direct-to-consumer sales and that as part of its global restructuring, it plans to lay off more than 20% of its workforce.

These layoffs will contribute to a $ 100 million reduction in operating expenses for the year, according to GoPro, which plans to shed another $ 250 million in operating expenses next year.

Company CEO Nicholas Woodman said that GoPro’s distribution network has been hit by the novel coronavirus pandemic and that as a result, the company must expedite its shift to a ‘more efficient and profitable direct-to-consumer-centric business’ model this year, something GoPro had already been pursuing. ‘We are crushed that this forces us to let go of many talented members of our team,’ Woodman said, ‘and we are forever grateful for their contributions.’

Though GoPro will primarily sell directly to consumers, the company says it will continue to make its products available through ‘select leading retailers’ in only ‘key regions’ for consumers who prefer to buy items indirectly and at physical stores. Other planned changes include reducing office space in five different locations, reducing its sales and marketing throughout this year ‘and beyond,’ as well as cutting spending in other unspecified ways.

Despite the changes, GoPro said that it still plans to move ahead with its 2020 product roadmap, which will include releasing new software, subscriptions and hardware targeted at action camera and smartphone owners. Woodman has voluntarily decided to skip the remainder of his 2020 salary, according to the company, which says its Board of Directors has also made the decision to avoid any additional cash compensation throughout the remainder of the year.

VSCO acquires Rylo for its advanced mobile video editing software

VSCO, the company behind the popular photo editing app by the same name, has announced its acquisition of Rylo, a company known for its compact camera and advanced video stabilization technology. VSCO explains that the use of video editing has doubled on its platform over the past year, underscoring the growing demand for video tools. The newly announced acquisition will give the company access to Rylo’s video editing software.

According to Rylo’s founders Chris Cunningham and Alex Karpenko, their company will shift its focus entirely to software, leaving the physical camera aspect behind. The Rylo app will be available to download on mobile and macOS until January 31, 2021, and the Rylo camera will remain available to purchase from Best Buy until the units are sold out. The Rylo camera and app will remain available to use following the acquisition.

‘Building high-end video editing capability on mobile is no small feat and we believe our combined technology and focus on video will help pave new innovation for video editing tools,’ VSCO CEO Joel Flory said as part of the company’s announcement. ‘We can’t wait to make these new tools available to the VSCO community next year.’

VSCO sues PicsArt for allegedly reverse engineering its filters

An exhibit provided in the complaint that shows PicsArt’s Gold subscription platform, which is where VSCO alleges its reverse engineered filters ended up.

Visual Supply Company, more commonly referred to as VSCO, has filed a lawsuit against the creators of PicsArt, a photo editing application, claiming the company reverse engineered a number of its photo filters found in its mobile application.

According to the complaint, filed in the Northern District of California, 17 PicsArt employees created VSCO accounts and used them to reverse engineer at least 19 presets VSCO offers, a violation of the terms of the VSCO app which state users ‘agree not to sell, license, rent, modify, distribute, copy, reproduce, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, publish, adapt, edit or create derivative works from any VSCO Content.’

VSCO says it attempted to remedy the situation out of court with a letter, sent to PicsArt in February 2019, demanding the company remove the reverse engineered presets from its app, provide accounting records for all profits and revenue made from the presets and identify all of the PicsArt employees who had opened an account with VSCO. PicsArt subsequently said it would remove all of the filters by March 22, 2019, but as of the complaint’s filing date, only 17 had been removed and two new filters PicsArt is publicizing appear to be reverse engineered as well.

An exhibit in the complaint that details a social media post that shows a pair of filters that VSCO claims PicsArt reverse engineered to sell as part of its own subscription service.

Now, PicsArt employees creating VSCO accounts alone isn’t too suspicious, but VSCO appears to have more than suspicion alone to back up its claims. According to the lawsuit:

VSCO’s color scientists have determined that at least nineteen presets published by PicsArt are effectively identical to VSCO presets that are only available through a VSCO account. Specifically, VSCO determined that those PicsArt filters have a Mean Color Difference (“MCD”) of less than two CIEDE2000 units (in some cases, far less than two units) compared to their VSCO counterparts. An MCD of less than two CIEDE2000 units between filters is imperceptible to the human eye and cannot have been achieved by coincidence or visual or manual approximation. On information and belief, PicsArt could have only achieved this degree of similarity between its filters and those of VSCO by using its employees’ VSCO user accounts to access the VSCO app and reverse engineer VSCO’s presets.

PicsArt has denied these allegations, with a spokesperson sharing the following statement with TechCrunch:

VSCO is not a direct competitor, but they clearly feel threatened by PicsArt. VSCO’s claims are meritless. It’s disappointing that they have made these false claims against us. PicsArt will vigorously defend itself against these baseless claims and all options are under consideration.

VSCO doesn’t mention a specific dollar value in the complaint, but asks for ‘compensatory damages, disgorgement of profits, corrective advertising, and costs and attorneys’ fees.’

VSCO will retire desktop film emulation presets early next year

Image software company VSCO has announced plans to become a fully mobile company. This process will involve retiring its existing desktop presets on March 1, 2019, VSCO revealed on its website, leaving users with the VSCO mobile app, mobile tools and presets, and the annual $ 19.99 membership.

VSCO first launched in 2012 to offer film emulation presets on desktop. Soon after, the company launched a mobile app offering the film presets, which ultimately proved popular. VSCO has continued to offer both desktop and mobile products since then, but that will change early next year.

‘While we honor our origins at VSCO, we’re also always moving forward,’ the company says on its website. VSCO’s desktop presets remain available for purchase for now. A total of eight film emulation packs are available, including ‘Eclectic Films,’ ‘Instant Films,’ and ‘Modern Films.’ Each preset pack costs $ 59 USD and is available for Adobe Lightroom CC, Classic CC, 6, 5, and 4, as well as ACR for PS CS6 and CC.

VSCO adds new ‘Preset Views’ to its Android and iOS apps

Today, VSCO introduced Preset Views, an interface change within its mobile application that makes it easier to see how presets look on your photos.

The new feature provides three new viewing options when adding presets to your photos. In addition to the standard view, VSCO now lets you see previews of each preset in various sizes, from small thumbnail to full-width photos.

“The feature is designed to help creators continue to evolve their creativity by encouraging them to step outside of their comfort zones and experiment with different presets,” says VSCO.

VSCO also added a new grouping function that makes it easier to see what presets work best with certain types of photo. Until now, presets were only grouped in the various collections VSCO introduced. You could rearrange them as your needs desired, but it’s a time-consuming process. And you still have to know what presets work best for various types of photos.

Now, you can get a better feel for what filters work best for portraits compared to those more suited for landscapes or urban environments. It also includes groupings of filters such as “monochrome” or “vibrant” for images that would look better as black and white or those that could use a little saturation.

The new features should be live across VSCO for both Android and iOS smartphones. If you don’t have VSCO, you can download it for free for both Android and iOS.

VSCO reveals ‘Messages’ feature, takes on Instagram’s DMs

VSCO X subscribers and free users alike will soon have access to a new direct messaging feature simply called Messages.

VSCO announced the feature earlier this week, bringing its app up to speed with Instagram, which has allowed direct messaging for ages. Using VSCO Messages, users can share text, images, DSCOs, profiles, and journal entries directly with other users who follow them. Direct messages can only be sent between followers, and they’re joined by the ability to leave a conversation, block the user, and/or report them if necessary.

VSCO X subscribers are getting access to the feature first, but free users will get Messages in the near future.

VSCO adds ‘Recipes’ feature that lets you create 10 custom presets

VSCO has launched a new feature for VSCO X subscribers called Recipes. With Recipes, subscribers are able to save their favorite edits, making it possible to apply them as a batch to future images. Up to 10 Recipes can be saved at a time via a new menu item that you tap after the image edits are chosen for the first time.

Non VSCO X subscribers will be able to save only one recipe, so if you want to get into the preset making game, you’ll need to pony up for the VSCO X membership ($ 20/year).

VSCO releases Mobile Presets 02 pack for desktop users

VSCO, the art and technology company behind the mobile app of the same name, has launched Mobile Presets 02 (MP2) for its desktop users. This bundle is designed for photographers who’d rather edit their photos on desktop than mobile, offering a total of 55 presets for Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom.

The company describes the MP2 bundle as ‘mobile emulation presets,’ enabling users to get the same looks on desktop that can be achieved using the company’s popular mobile app.

The MP2 bundle contains both original presets, such as the Low Contrast Series V1 through V8 packs, plus branded presets that were launched as limited-time downloads within the app. The branded presets include NikeLab ACG, Krochet Kids KK1 and KK2, Levi’s LV1 – LV3, TA-KU TK, and Neocha NC.

The presets can be used with Adobe Camera Raw for Photoshop CC and CS6, as well as Lightroom 4, 5, 6, and CC. VSCO is offering a $ 10 discount until September 10th via the coupon ‘VSAG17.’ The Mobile Presets 02 bundle costs $ 60 USD and is available through VSCO’s online store.

VSCO releases its first video editing tool to VSCO X subscribers on iOS

VSCO has launched a video editing tool for its VSCO X subscribers who use the iOS app, enabling them to directly edit videos and utilize presets on footage up to 4K/60fps resolution. The video tool is compatible with all video lengths and any video format supported by iOS, according to TechCrunch, and it utilizes the company’s own SENS technology.

Though the feature is arriving first for VSCO X on iOS, the company also plans to release the video editing tool for Android in the future. An in-app banner that takes users to the new feature can be found within the ‘Studio’ section of the app. Once opened, users will see videos from their device’s Camera Roll populated into the Studio. VSCO X presets can be applied to these images, and manual adjustments can be made for things like saturation and contrast.

“VSCO’s mission is to help people become better creators, and video is a creative frontier we’re increasingly passionate about and focused on,” VSCO co-founder and CEO Joel Flory told TechCrunch. “Video editing for VSCO X members is a first step into what we see as limitless possibilities for video editing tools on VSCO.”

VSCO for iOS is available now on iTunes. A VSCO X membership costs $ 20/year.

VSCO adds free ‘Oakley’ photo filters to iOS and Android apps

VSCO has teamed up with eyewear brand Oakley to launch new photo presets that replicate the company’s lens technology. These presets are free and available for both the Android and iOS versions of the VSCO app, enabling anyone to alter their photos to create scenes seemingly viewed through a pair of Oakley glasses.

The new photo presets are collected under the ‘Oakley PRIZM Series,’ and they can be found by opening the app and navigating to its store.

The free pack contains a total of three image filters called ‘Oak1,’ ‘Oak2,’ and ‘Oak3.’ VSCO says these presets are best used with landscape and outdoor adventure photography; however, they’re only available for a limited, unspecified duration so jump on it if you want to add that… sunglass touch to your photos.
