Nikon 14-24mm F2.8 S and 50mm F1.2 S for Z-mount unveiled

16 Sep

Nikon has officially announced two more lenses for its Z-mount, full-frame mirrorless system: the Nikkor Z 14-24mm F2.8 S and 50mm F1.2 S. Both are slated to arrive by the end of 2020.

Nikkor Z 14-24mm F2.8 S

The 14-24mm is almost 35% lighter than its AF-S 14-24mm F2.8 G predecessor for DSLRs, and thanks to a nearly-flat front element it accepts conventional threaded filters (albeit very large 112mm ones) via the included HB-97 lens hood. That’s unusual for a lens of this type, and a rear filter holder also accepts trimmed gel filters.

Overall the lens measures a relatively compact 88.5mm (3.5in) x 124.5mm (5in), and weighs 650g (1.4lb). It includes a nine-blade aperture and features Nano Crystal and ARNEO anti-reflective coatings to control ghosting, flare and coma. Like the recent Z 24-70mm and 70-200mm F2.8 zooms that this lens complements, the 14-24mm offers ‘extensive’ weather sealing and includes a small OLED display panel on the lens barrel itself.

Nikkor Z 50mm F1.2 S

The Z 14-24mm may be relatively compact for its class, but the Z 50mm F1.2 S is decidedly not. With optics one and a half times bigger than those used by the Z 50mm F1.8, it weighs in at 1090g (2.4lb) and measures 89.5mm (3.6in) x 150m (6in).

It features a ‘symmetrical’ optical design, which Nikon says improves its ability to provide edge-to-edge sharpness. The lens features two focusing groups, each with its own STM stepping motor, and its optical formula includes three aspherical elements to boost resolution and reduce distortion. Nano Crystal and ARNEO coatings are also used, and like 50mm F1.2 also includes weather-sealing and lens barrel display.

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm S F2.8 will go on sale in November for $ 2400; the Nikkor Z 50mm F1.2 arrives in December for $ 2100.

MELVILLE, NY (September 16, 2020) – Today, Nikon Inc. unveiled two exciting additions to the rapidly expanding NIKKOR Z lens lineup, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to the evolving Nikon Z series. These new full-frame S-Line1 lenses showcase the superior optical performance and capabilities of the Nikon Z mount for photographers and creators. The ultra-wide angle NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S is the world’s shortest2 and lightest2 full-frame f/2.8 zoom lens with a 14mm field of view, enabling a versatile range to capture expansive views including cityscapes, landscapes, astrophotography and more. Meanwhile, the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S is the paramount fast-aperture prime lens engineered for optical excellence to help Z series users achieve unrivaled power, exceptional sharpness and show-stopping bokeh.

“This is an exciting time for Nikon lens technology as we lead the way in providing the most incredible optics available today,” said Jay Vannatter, Executive Vice President, Nikon Inc. “The highly anticipated NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 and the powerful NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 lenses demonstrate the incredible innovation behind the Z series and the limitless possibilities of what our engineers are capable of achieving.”

NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S: Broaden Your Horizons with the Essential Ultra-Wide Angle Zoom Lens
The much anticipated NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S is the shortest and lightest full-frame zoom lens of its kind, offering unique user benefits and incredible rendering capabilities across the wide zoom range. Joining the previously announced NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S and NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S lenses, this lens completes the trinity of coveted fast aperture Z series zooms. The 14-24mm is a versatile lens that proves the optical superiority of the Nikon Z mount, producing excellent edge-to-edge sharpness, minimal distortion and exceptional photo and video capabilities for creators. The new optical design allows for a significantly shorter lens that is nearly 35 percent lighter than its predecessor, the popular AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8, making this lightweight lens ideal for a trek into the field. Meanwhile, its wide-angle zoom range offers video content creators a new option for capturing tack-sharp establishing shots, interiors or POV angles.

The NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S lens is engineered to deliver unrivaled optical excellence and maximum usability. This thoroughly modernized lens design features a nearly flat front lens element, which allows the attachment of a threaded filter to the included additional lens hood (HB-97). This design provides users the ability to attach a Neutral density (ND) filter, as well as the new Neutral Color NC Filter 112mm or Circular Polarizing Filter II 112mm3, while a rear filter holder also accepts a trimmable filter gel. With the option to easily use multiple filter types, users can capture epic landscapes with greater versatility and flexibility in more lighting conditions than ever before. An excellent choice for photographing stunning night-time views, the 14-24mm lens delivers amazing low-light performance with a constant f/2.8 aperture and stellar point light reproduction capabilities that suppress sagittal coma and flare for tack-sharp stars and city lights.

The NIKKOR Z 14-24mm combines a robust design and reliable performance with custom controls, including a customizable one-touch shortcut button, EL Display panel and custom control ring, making controls and settings convenient and accessible. The optical formula includes four ED lens elements, helping to control chromatic aberrations, and capture fine details, including colors and lines, with consistent accuracy – a true benefit to those shooting interiors and architecture. Additionally, flare, ghosting and coma are suppressed, even with harsh backlight, thanks to the lens’ Nano Crystal Coat (N) and anti-reflective ARNEO Coat, while its robust fluorine coating and extensive weather sealing allow Nikon Z series users to shoot confidently in rugged and unpredictable environments. As an added benefit to videographers, the lens also features an electro-magnetic diaphragm, to help maintain smooth exposures as light changes.

NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S: Immense Details. Exceptional Sharpness.
The new NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S is Nikon’s fastest and most optically impressive AF prime lens yet, effortlessly balancing the combination of intense sharpness and dreamy bokeh. For pro-level creators that need powerful performance and versatility, the 50mm f/1.2 delivers a standard focal length with unrivaled sharpness, speed, and life-like clarity. With a bright f/1.2 aperture and premium S-Line engineering, the NIKKOR Z 50mm lens is the definitive and versatile prime for a range of photography styles including portraiture, street photography, landscapes, nightscapes and more.

The NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S lens effortlessly achieves a soft and enchanting bokeh, with a circular background blur that is smooth and gradual when focusing for a natural “fall-off”. The bright f/1.2 aperture affords a dramatically shallow depth of field with beautiful subject isolation for stunning portraiture, while it also offers exceptional low-light performance. Maximizing the capabilities of Z series’ technology, the 50mm f/1.2 lens adopts stepping motors (STM) as well as a multi-focusing system4, enabling multiple lens elements to focus simultaneously for fast and precise autofocusing, even when shooting close-up or wide open. Furthermore, the lens’ ability to maintain stable exposure in changing lighting conditions, combined with its quiet operation and minimal focus breathing, establishes the lens as an appealing tool for video creators.

The NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S lens tells a story of balance in design and functionality, seamlessly harmonizing intense resolution and velvety bokeh. The symmetrical optical design prevents light from being bent or distorted as it passes through the lens, meaning the purest, sharpest image reaches the camera sensor without any added distortion or aberration for true edge-to-edge sharpness. This innovative lens design also includes three aspherical elements to help virtually eliminate distortion, for superior resolution, point light reproduction and superb three-dimensional clarity. Designed for pro-level reliability, the NIKKOR Z 50mm is a superbly balanced lens constructed with robust weather sealing, a customizable control ring and shortcut button, as well as an EL Display panel to enhance workflow. Meanwhile, the lens is engineered with Nikon’s Nano Crystal and ARNEO Coating to minimize flare, ghosting and coma, allowing Z series users to confidently shoot in a variety of lighting scenarios, including harsh backlighting, to capture any scene with incredible sharpness and clarity.

The Canon 90D Unveiled Through Leaked Promo Video

24 Aug

The post The Canon 90D Unveiled Through Leaked Promo Video appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Jaymes Dempsey.

After months of rumors and speculation surrounding Canon’s new DSLR offerings, we finally have something certain to report:

The specs of the Canon 90D, as indicated by a promotional video leaked from Canon.

The Canon 90D Unveiled Through Leaked Promo Video

If you’re a Canon user, you’re going to want to pay attention. Because the Canon 90D is a seriously impressive piece of kit, one that seems to be a combination of the Canon 80D line and the Canon 7D line, and one that will carry on many of the best features from both camera lineups.

Here’s the promotional video in full:

?

Now, what’s so special about the Canon 90D?

First, the resolution is bound to impress: The 90D is slated to have a 32.5-megapixel sensor, which is a huge step up from both the Canon 80D (at 24.2 MP) and the Canon 7D Mark II (at 20.2 MP). The increased megapixel count means increased crop capabilities and an increased potential for large prints.

High megapixel counts usually result in slower continuous shooting. But not for the 90D, which fires off 10 frames per second. This is enough for any type of action photography: sports, wildlife, bird, and more. Plus, the Canon 90D features 45 autofocus points, all of which are cross-type. Together, these features should be a potent combination in the hands of a dedicated photographer.

Add to this 100% viewfinder coverage, impressive battery life of 1300 photos, and an articulating screen, and you’ve got yourself a winner. You should also remember that the Canon 90D will offer dual pixel autofocus, which practically guarantees fast and efficient focus while using Live View.

Who should get the Canon 90D?

I’d recommend grabbing the Canon 90D if you’re a hobbyist or semi-professional photographer. Better yet, you should be interested in action photography of any kind. The strong autofocus and 10-fps continuous shooting is too impressive not to pass up.

Plus, if you’re looking for a bit of a megapixel boost compared to an older Canon, the 90D is the way to go.

Now I’d like to ask you:

What do you think of the Canon 90D? Will you be looking to purchase it? And what are your favorite Canon 90D features?

Let me know in the comments!

Samsung Galaxy A80 phone unveiled with sliding, rotating triple-camera array

12 Apr

Samsung has unveiled one of its most unique smartphones to date: the Galaxy A80. This model features a sliding pop-up camera array that contains a 48MP F2.0 main camera, an 8MP F2.2 ultrawide camera and a time-of-flight sensor. A rotation mechanism enables the cameras to flip from facing the rear to the front of the phone when appropriate, eliminating the need for a ‘notch’ or ‘hole punch’ in the display.

The camera mechanism is the Galaxy A80’s most notable feature, making the higher-quality rear cameras available for activities that would ordinarily involve a lower-quality front-facing camera, such as snapping selfies and livestreaming. According to Samsung, the sliding mechanism is activated and the cameras are rotated when the user selects the A80’s ‘selfie mode.’

The main 48MP camera is able to capture ‘vivid images’ at night, Samsung claims, and the technology enables Live Focus videos by gathering depth and measurement data on objects visible in the scene. Other camera features include Super Steady video for ‘pro-level action’ shots, a Scene Optimizer feature that can recognize up to 30 scenes, and Flaw Detection for automatically identifying ‘glitches’ before the image is taken.

Cameras aside, the Galaxy A80 features a 6.7″ Full HD+ 1080 x 2400 Super AMOLED display alongside 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 3700mAh battery. The model supports fast charging and has a fingerprint sensor embedded in the display.

According to The Verge, the Galaxy A80 will be available in Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, China and Hong Kong starting on May 29 in gold, white, and black color options. Samsung hasn’t revealed the price at this time.

Canon Zoemini C and S instant cameras unveiled with built-in Zink printers

28 Mar

Canon Europe has unveiled its new Zoemini S and Zoemini C, follow-up products to the original Zoemini portable printer launched last year.

The two new camera models feature an integrated printer that supports Zink adhesive-backed photo paper, enabling users to directly capture and print their images as small stickers. The Zoemini S is the flagship model, offering mobile app support and select other features the Zoemini C lacks. Although it’s Canon Europe that made the announcement it was Canon Deutschland that uploaded an introduction video to YouTube. There’s no audio, but the overlaid text is in German.

The Canon Zoemini S features an 8MP camera and a microSD card slot for directly capturing and storing images. The camera itself is quite basic, featuring a front-facing mirror, ring light, Bluetooth connectivity, and an integrated Zink printer.

The Zoemini S model supports Canon’s Mini Print App for Android and iOS, which receives images from the camera over Bluetooth. Device owners can use the app to apply image filters, create collages, and print 2 x 3in / 5 x 7.6cm photos, as well as remotely triggering the camera’s shutter and setting a timer.

The Zoemini S will be offered in Pearl White, Matte Black, and Rose Gold color options starting on April 25.

Joining the Zoemini S is the Zoemini C, which features a 5MP instead of 8MP sensor alongside a microSD card slot and integrated Zink printer. The Zoemini C model likewise features a front-facing selfie mirror, but does not feature a ring light or support the Canon Mini Print App.

The Zoemini C will be offered in Bumblebee Yellow, Bubble Gum Pink, Mint Green, and Seaside Blue colors starting April 25.

Both camera models will be shipped with 10 sheets of Zink adhesive-backed photo paper and as of publishing there is no pricing information available.

Kamlan 28mm F1.4 APS-C lens unveiled with upcoming Kickstarter campaign

01 Jun

Chinese company Machang Optics is preparing to launch its new Kamlan 28mm F1.4 MFT lens on Kickstarter, where the company currently has its project listed in draft. The latest Kamlan lens is billed as an inexpensive alternative to pricier lenses while offering the same “premium optical quality” paired with a versatile focal length, super-low chromatic aberration, and a full metallic body.

The Kamlan 28mm F1.4 APS-C lens features 7 groups in 8 elements, 11 circular blades, 0.25m minimum focusing distance, 0.15x max magnification, manual focus, 52mm filter thread, and a 348g / 12oz weight. Machang Optics says the manual aperture ring is de-clicked for smooth changes during video recording.

Despite its budget-tier cost, Machang claims its new Kamlan lens provides a “neutral, accurate color rendition” and excellent center sharpness. The company plans to offer its latest model in Canon EOS M, Micro Four Thirds, Sony E, and Fuji XF mounts.

Once live, Kickstarter backers will able to pledge $ 149 USD to the campaign for a single Kamlan 28mm F1.4 lens. Shipping to backers is expected to start in August, and the lens has an anticipated $ 199 USD retail price.

In addition to its new 28mm offering, Machang has revealed a product timeline for future lenses it plans to launch: 21mm F1.8 APS-C, 50mm F1.1 Mark2, 32mm F1.3 APS-C, and 15mm F1.8 APS-C. The company indicates it will launch these new lenses later this year.

Kodak unveiled its own bitcoin miner at CES, will let you rent it for $3,400 for two years

12 Jan

If you thought Kodak news couldn’t get any stranger following the company’s debut of a “photo-centric cryptocurrency” called KODAKCoin earlier this week… you were wrong. In a further attempt to cash in on the cryptocurrency mania currently spreading across the world, Kodak has debuted its own bitcoin mining machine at CES.

The bitcoin miner is called the Kodak KashMiner, and you can rent it for just $ 3,400 and keep a share of the profits you make mining bitcoin for the next 2 years.

We’ll give you a moment to let the absurdity of those last few sentences soak in before we attempt to put this madness in context.

Ready to move on? Okay.

First of all, here is the Kodak KashMiner in the flesh at CES 2018:

The deal, according to the pictures of Kodak’s pamphlet about the KashMiner, is that you can rent the machine on a 2-year contract for $ 3,400. From there, contends Kodak—who clearly know their stuff, having been publically interested in cryptocurrency for a full 48 hours now—you will earn approximately $ 750 per month, half of which you get to keep while the other half goes to a company called Spotlite Energy Systems in California.

At that rate ($ 375 per month), you’ll make $ 9,000 in 24 months, or approximately $ 5,600 in profit.

There’s just one problem with that line of thinking. Okay, actually, there are a few, as many people with actual cryptocurrency mining knowhow pointed out on the twittersphere as soon as news of Kodak’s bitcoin mining machine hit the headlines.

Basically, bitcoin mining will not produce the same output month after month for 2 full years, even in the unlikely even that the price stays at $ 14,000 per bitcoin. According to bitcoin economist Saifedean Ammous, mining difficulty is increasing by about 15% per month, which means your total output after 24 months will be a lot less than the advertised $ 9,000+. But even if Kodak’s numbers were correct, there’s one other problem.

It seems the KashMiner that Kodak is so graciously offering to rent you for $ 1,700 per year is just a rebranded Bitmain Antminer S9, an industry standard bitcoin miner that you can buy outright for just $ 2,320—a full $ 1,080 less than Kodak’s 2-year rental fee.

The Bitmain Antminer S9

Kodak’s initial cryptocurrency and blockchain announcement on Monday seemed, if a bit strange, at least not entirely crazy.

Using the blockchain for copyright registration and tracking makes sense (and has been done before), and if Kodak wants to create its own cryptocurrency for photographers, it’s a risk the company is more than welcome to take. In fact, at first, it seemed like a risk that was well worth taking, as Kodak’s stock more than tripled on the news.

But this bitcoin mining rental scheme feels like something else entirely. If the bitcoin experts speaking out about this online are correct, either Kodak has no idea what it’s doing, or this is a full-blown bitcoin mining scam.

OnePlus 5T unveiled: edge-to-edge display and a dual-camera optimized for low light

17 Nov

OnePlus has just launched its latest smartphone, the OnePlus 5T. The 5T carries over most of the internal components, including the Snapdragon 835 chipset, from its predecessor the OnePlus 5, but comes with a very obvious change on the exterior: The AMOLED screen now features an 18:9 aspect ratio and covers almost the entire front of the device, as it is en vogue this year.

Another important change can be found in the camera department: The 5T comes with the same 16MP main camera as the OnePlus 5, but instead of a telephoto module the secondary camera slot now houses a 20MP sensor that has been optimized for low-light performance.

Like on the main camera, the sensor is coupled with a fast F1.7 aperture, but is using what OnePlus calls ‘Intelligent Pixel Technology’ to merge four pixels into one, reducing image noise and improving sharpness. The system kicks in at light levels lower than 10 Lux… which is pretty dim.

Of course, a background-blurring portrait mode is on board as well, and a new multi-frame algorithm helps improve image quality when using the function in low light. OnePlus also says the new camera setup offers a similar zoom performance to the OnePlus 5’s camera.

Most other components, including the unibody metal shell, remain unchanged from the OnePlus 5. The 5T will be available from November 21st at $ 500 for the 64GB model with 6GB or RAM, and $ 560 for the 128GB version with 8GB of RAM. This makes the smartphone, like its predecessors, a real bargain when compared to most competitors.

We have our hands on a test device, and are eager to check the performance of the new dual-camera over the coming days.

Key specifications:

  • Dual-camera
  • Main camera: Sony IMX 398 1/2.8″ 16MP sensor, F1.7,
  • Secondary camera: Sony IMX 376K 1/2.78″ 20MP sensor, F1.7
  • 27.22mm equivalent focal length
  • Dual-LED flash
  • 4K video at 30 fps
  • 720p slow-motion at 120 fps
  • Manual mode and Raw capture
  • 16MP / F2.0 front camera
  • 6″ 1080p AMOLED display, 18:9 aspect ratio
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset
  • 64/128GB storage, 6/8GB RAM
  • 3,300 mAh battery

Reflex modular SLR unveiled: The first new manual 35mm SLR design in decades

08 Nov

Reflex has just launched the Reflex I: the first newly-designed manual 35mm SLR system to see the light of day in more than 25 years. The camera pairs a classic look with a modular design that enables personalization, including an interchangeable film back and lens mount. Reflex I supports legacy lenses, as well as both personally designed 3D-printed components and third-party accessories.

To help fuel the customization options, Reflex plans to freely release most of the camera’s electronic and hardware designs once the camera officially hits shelves. Notable among the modular design is Reflex’s I-Plate and included universal M42 lens mount; the company says buyers can also use alternative mounts compatible with Nikon F, Olympus OM, Canon FD, and Pentax PK lenses.

Loading film, meanwhile, has been simplified via the modular I-Back, an interchangeable back piece that enables photographers to pre-load film for rapidly swapping to a different film during a shoot. Other modern features hope to join these two modular components, though their inclusion will partly depend on how successful the Reflex’s Kickstarter funding campaign is.

The Reflex I features an integrated flash and continuous LED light source, a first for analog cameras, according to the company. Photographers can select between three different LED intensities, plus the flash.

Assuming the Kickstarter campaign reaches at least £150k in funding, the company plans to integrate the Reflex I with a companion mobile app that will log the settings for each film and shot, enabling photographers to note the settings used to capture their favorite photos.

Reflex is offering the Reflex I camera body early bird units to backers who pledge at least £350 / $ 458 on Kickstarter. Deliveries to those backers are estimated to begin in August 2018. The Kickstarter campaign also offers other rewards for different backing tiers, such as a bundle with just the I-Back and I-Mount, a prime lens, “Analogue Pack,” and more.

Check out the campaign page for more details.

SanDisk 1TB SDXC card prototype unveiled at Photokina

20 Sep

Western Digital has introduced the first ever 1TB SDXC card, doing so under its recently acquired SanDisk brand. Though the card will not be available on the market anytime soon, the prototype does serve to highlight the next level in SD card capacity. This isn’t the first time SanDisk has unveiled a high-capacity prototype at Photokina; in 2014, the company unveiled its then-prototype for a 512GB SDXC card.

‘Just a few short years ago the idea of a 1TB capacity point in an SD card seemed so futuristic – it’s amazing that we’re now at the point where it’s becoming a reality,” said Stargate Studios CEO Sam Nicholson. ‘…High-capacity cards allow us to capture more without interruption, streamlining our workflow, and eliminating the worry that we may miss a moment because we have to stop to swap out cards.’

Though Western Digital is showcasing the prototype at Photokina, it has not stated when it anticipates the card being available commercially, nor what consumers can expect to pay.
