Canon’s EOS Webcam Utility out of beta on Windows, now supports more programs, cameras

Canon has announced its EOS Webcam Utility is now out of beta for Windows, bringing improved support and additional compatibility with more Canon cameras.

Originally released in beta for Windows, Canon’s EOS Webcam Utility is now an official release. In addition to supporting more livestreaming, messaging and video conferencing programs, the official release also adds support for more cameras, ensuring more than 40 Canon camera models can be used as webcams over USB and Wi-Fi (with compatible cameras).

Qualcomm’s new 865 chipset supports 8K video, 4K HDR, no-limit 960fps capture and more

Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform, its latest chipset that pushes the limits of mobile processing in a device that’s small enough to fit on the face of a penny.

In addition to support for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 4G/5G modem, the chipset also brings a number of improvements in the imaging department thanks to its Kryo 585 octa-core CPU, Adreno 650 GPU and Spectra 480 Image Signal Processor (ISP).

Unlike previous chipsets, which could only hand one pixel per clock cycle, the Snapdragon 865 can handle four pixels per clock cycle. In addition to power savings and running cooler, this increase enables exciting new features on the photo and video front.

Specifically, the Snapdragon 865 can handle up to two gigapixels of data per second thanks in part to its dual 14-bit ISPs. This means the Snapdragon 865 will be able to handle up to 200-megapixel captures, as well as dual 64-megapixel camera captures with zero shutter lag and HEIC photo capture. It can also apply multi-frame noise reduction on the fly, as well as provide real-time object classification, segmentation and replacement in images thanks to its 5th generation Qualcomm AI Engine. This new technology will make it possible to ‘quickly and intelligently identify different backgrounds, people, and objects, so they can be treated individually for a truly customized photo,’ according to Qualcomm.

The Snapdragon 865 chipset is also a major boost for mobile video. In addition to 8K video capture, the chipset can also handle 4K HDR (HDR10+, HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision), 4K video at 120fps and 4K video capture while simultaneously capturing a burst of five 640-megapixel photos. This makes it the first chipset that captures Dobly Vision video on the fly and in addition to capturing 120fps video, the chipset can also playback 120fps video in realtime when paired with a 120Hz display, such as those found inside the Razer Phone, Razer Phone 2, Sharp Aquos R3 and Asus ROG Phone II smartphones.

Qualcomm has addressed high-speed capture as well. The Snapdragon 865 can capture 720p video at 960fps without limits. 720p video at 960fps is nothing new, as the Sony Xperia XZ and over a dozen of other smartphones from Sony, Samsung, Huawei, Sony and Xiaomi can attest to, but current devices are limited to capturing just a few seconds at a time. When paired with the proper hardware, the Snapdragon 865 chipset will be able to record 960fps video indefinitely; or at least until you run out of storage.

Qualcomm says flagship devices based on the Snapdragon 865 are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2020. So far HMD, Motorola, Oppo and Xiaomi have confirmed they have devices on the way based on the Snapdragon 865 chipset.

Samsung Exynos 980 chipset supports 108MP images, 4K video at 120 fps

Samsung has launched its latest top-end chipset for mobile devices which will likely make an appearance in the brand’s next-generation Galaxy S and Note series smartphones. The Exynos 980’s headline features are a built-in 5G modem and plenty of processing power, but the new chip also has lots on offer for mobile photographers and creators.

The chipset supports image resolutions up to 108MP which means it’s ready for use with the next generation of high-resolution Quad-Bayer-like sensors. The image signal processor supports up to five sensors and can simultaneously process the output from three, allowing for advanced image-merging and other computational imaging methods.

There is also a built-in neural processing unit (NPU) which is specially designed to run artificial intelligence tasks. On the camera side of things, this is used for scene and object detection and subsequent optimization of camera parameters.

Exynos 980 powered mobile devices will also be able to encode and decode 4K video at 120 frames per second (fps). Support for HDR10+ with dynamic mapping should result in better color rendering in video clips.

There’s no definitive timeline for when this chipset will be released, but it’s safe to say Samsung’s future smartphones will likely be the first to showcase it.

Modular 5K Octopus Camera supports swapping in different sensor modules

Octopus Cinema has introduced Octopus Camera, an open source, upgradable, programmable and mostly-modular prototype cinema camera powered by Linux. The model features a replaceable image sensor, enabling users to toggle 4K and 5K sensor modules with both color and monochrome options.

The Octopus Camera rig features an Intel NUC processing board that can be removed and upgraded by the user when newer hardware becomes available. This modular functionality extends to the camera’s sensor; the model supports multiple imaging modules from XIMEA, including native monochrome, full-frame, 35mm and global shutter.

According to Octopus Cinema, the camera’s out-of-the-box functionality will include 4K lossless compressed 12-bit raw footage in CinemaDNG format, but there will also be a higher bitrate 900Mbit 10-bit HEVC option. Users with other needs will be able to add other recording formats from third-party libraries using an SDK.

The camera measures 110 x 110 x 110mm (4.3 x 4.3 x 4.3in) and weighs 900g (1.98lbs). The model has a CNC milled aluminum chassis and a glass white finish. Imaging and processing specs pertain to the sensor modules and Intel board included in the camera.

The device is powered by an 8-core Intel i7-8650U CPU and features 16GB of RAM upgradable to 32GB, two HDMI ports, four USB 3.0 ports, SATA III, and it is capable of write speeds up to 350MB/s. When used with a 5K full-frame imaging module, the rig can shoot at up to 5K 48fps 10-bit HEVC or 12-bit lossy raw video.

The company hasn’t provided any information on pricing or availability, stating only that Octopus Camera will arrive in summer 2020.

Twitter now supports adding images and other media to retweets

Twitter has announced support for adding images, as well as videos and GIFs, to retweets and quoted tweets. Users had requested this feature for years, but Twitter explained to The Verge that it was tricky enabling media comments on retweets and quotes while maintaining a logical design that viewers could readily parse.

The new support, which is currently rolling out Twitter’s mobile apps and mobile website, allows users to add an image, video, or GIF after tapping the ‘Retweet with comment’ option on an existing tweet.

The company has chosen a design that nestles the original tweet with a timestamp and thumbnail under the full-width media published by the user who responded to the original tweet. This design only appears on mobile at this time, however, and The Verge points out that GIF comments on retweets look clunky on desktop.

It’s unclear when the feature and mobile-like nesting design will arrive for desktop users. The new option is rolling out on Android and iOS now.

Loupedeck+ now supports Adobe Audition and Final Cut Pro X

Loupedeck+, the customizable post-production controller, has added Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Audition to the list of supported programs.

Last year alone, the Loupedeck+ gained support for Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Adobe After Effects CC, Adobe Photoshop CC, Capture One and Skylum Aurora HDR. Now, the device is even more capable with support for Apple’s professional video editing program, Final Cut Pro X, and Adobe’s audio editing program Audition.

With Final Cut Pro X, the Loupedeck is now able to color grade and color correct with its HSL color wheels, adjust/trim clips and scrub through the video timeline. The other keys and dials on the keyboard can also be customized to control more than 400+ additional functions and assign various keyboard shortcuts. Loupedeck+ configurations can also be imported and exported for syncing across multiple units.

In Adobe Audition, the Loupedeck+ can manage single track and multitrack projects with the ability to trim/nudge audio clips, add fades and effects with the click of a button, and adjust the volume for different channels with the scroll wheels.

The software update can be installed directly from the Loupedeck program if you already have it installed on your computer. Otherwise, Loupedeck version 2.6 can be downloaded from the Loupedeck website.

The Loupedeck+ controller unit is available from Loupedeck for $ 249 / 229€ with free worldwide shipping. Loupedeck also has a YouTube channel with various tutorials showing how to make the most of the Loupedeck+ controller.

New Samsung Exynos chipset supports 8K video, up to five camera modules

Samsung announced its Exynos 9820 chipset, which will likely power the company’s 2019 flagship smartphones, including the Galaxy S10, late last year. Now Samsung has unveiled additional detail on the new processor in a press release.

Of course, it’s the new chipset’s imaging capabilities of interest and on paper it looks like the Exynos 9820 won’t disappoint. It will be able to manage up to five camera modules. It’s already known at least one version of the Galaxy S10 will likely come with a triple-camera on the back. This leaves enough processing power for a front dual-camera as well.

In addition devices equipped with the chipset will be able to record 8K video using a 10-bit HEVC codec. This doesn’t necessarily mean such high-res video will be standard on the Galaxy S10 at launch, but it’s good to know any Exynos 9820-equipped devices will be future-proof in terms of video and an 8K mode could possibly be activated via firmware update.

On the display side of things the new chipset can manage 4K displays with HDR10+ and dynamic tone mapping.

Non-imaging highlights include a tri-cluster setup with a mix of Samsung custom cores and ARM designs, a Mali-G76 12-core design that is 40% faster than last year’s GPU, a neural processing unit (NPU) that is seven times faster than the previous version and a 8nm LPP process, which requires 10% less power than the 10nm LPP process from last year.

Timelapse+ VIEW Intervalometer now supports select Fujifilm, Panasonic cameras

Timelapse+ has announced support for select Fuji X series cameras and Panasonic cameras with its Timelapse+ VIEW Intervalometer, which went on sale to the public in January 2017.

Until now, the Timelapse+ VIEW Intervalometer only supported select Nikon, Canon, Sony and Olympus cameras. Now it’s capable of triggering the following camera systems from Fujifilm and Panasonic:

• Fujifilm X-T2
• Fujifilm X-T3
• Fujifilm GFX 50S

Panasonic:
• Panasonic GH3
• Panasonic GH4
• Panasonic GH5

The Timelapse+ VIEW is a powerful intervalometer with features including an OLED color screen, automatic exposure ramping, gesture controls, live preview and an accompanying smartphone app for wireless control of the settings. It features a 15+ hour battery life according to Timelapse+ and also has the option to be powered externally using a Micro USB cable.

Rhino Arc II 4-axis robotic camera system supports 15lb camera payloads

Rhino has launched a Kickstarter campaign for its new Rhino Arc II, a “robotic camera assistant” designed to replace a fluid head. The Arc II features a 4-axis motorized head with support for both tripods and the Rhino Slider, as well as up to 6.8kg/15lbs of camera equipment. Users have both joystick and mobile control options.

Rhino Arc II supports LightLapse, Interview, Keyframe, and Rack modes for smooth camera movements in a variety of filming scenarios. The robotic assistant supports Rhino Focus and the High Torque & High Speed Motor as optional tools for expanded capabilities.

The system is also backwards compatible with the Rhino EVO Motor and Slider EVO. When used with an optional Rhino Power dummy battery, Arc II offers integrated power output for mirrorless and DSRL cameras. Other features include an integrated 501 plate receiver, an OLED screen, and a pan motor for motorized mounting.

Rhino is offering the Arc II to Kickstarter backers who pledge at least $ 960 USD, a $ 240 discount over the anticipated retail price. The campaign also offers other rewards for backers, including the Rhino Slider Carbon, Slider Pro, and Rhino Arc II + Slider bundles. Shipping is expected to start in May 2019. YI 360 VR camera can livestream in 4K, supports Vive and Rift headsets

Chinese company YI has introduced a new consumer camera called the YI 360 VR. This model features a pair of cameras with 220-degree f/2.0 aspheric glass lenses, one on the front and another on the back, that simultaneously record footage. The resulting videos have up to a 4K/30fps resolution if stitched in-camera, while footage stitched using the camera’s PC app maxes out at 5.7K/30fps resolution.

The YI 360 VR is compatible with both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets. The camera supports recording 4K video for up to 60 minutes per charge, and you’ve got integrated dual-band WiFi for livestreaming in 4K.

Users are able to preview the footage in five modes: little planet, stretched view, panoramic, round, and dual VR. Here’s a quick introduction that gives you an idea of the kinds of shots you can expect from the YI 360 VR:
