Leica today unveiled a new “unprecedented” special edition version of its black-and-white sensor camera. Meet the Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) ‘Stealth Edition’: an even more understated version of Leica’s monochrome digital rangefinder that features all matte black styling, jet-black cowhide leather trim, and glow-in-the-dark engravings “for optimal use in low-light situations.”

The Stealth Edition is a product of the collaboration between Leica Camera and Marcus Wainwright, the Founder, CEO, and Creative Director of fashion brand rag & bone.

“For me the Leica M system personifies the pursuit of perfection in an object designed for a singular purpose,” says Wainwright. “Inspired by that, I was aiming to try and further refine and perfect the M Monochrom—an almost impossible task—by distilling it to its purest form and highlighting the stealth nature of the camera and lens.”

Only 125 sets of the matte black ‘Stealth Edition’ will be made, each with its own matching Summicron-M 35 mm F2 ASPH lens, a black fabric carrying strap, a metal front cap for the lens and, of course, a certificate of authenticity. According to our Leica press contact, the price for the camera and lens is $ 15,750, and will begin shipping March 20th.

To learn more about this camera, head over to the Leica website. And if you want to see what this black-and-white camera is made of, check out our studio scene and real-world sample galleries below:

Press Release

Leica Camera and Marcus Wainwright of rag & bone Collaborate for Special Edition M Monochrom (Typ 246)

The new ‘Stealth Edition’ set underscores Wainwright’s quest for purity and perfection with a sleek, matte black version of the distinctive Leica M Monochrom

March 8, 2018 – Today, Leica announced an unprecedented special edition of its unique digital rangefinder camera with a black-and-white sensor: the Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) ‘Stealth Edition.’ Limited to just 125 sets worldwide and designed by Marcus Wainwright, CEO, Founder and Creative Director of the New York-based fashion brand rag & bone, the special edition camera and accompanying Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH. lens matches Leica’s high standard for quality and craftsmanship, with a new twist. With the M Monochrom camera, Wainwright, a longtime Leica photographer and enthusiast of black-and-white photography, has intensified the highly coveted unobtrusive nature of the camera with a unique matte black look and glow-in-the-dark accents for added functionality.

“For me the Leica M system personifies the pursuit of perfection in an object designed for a singular purpose. Inspired by that, I was aiming to try and further refine and perfect the M Monochrom – an almost impossible task – by distilling it to its purest form and highlighting the stealth nature of the camera and lens,” Wainwright said.

Staying true to Leica’s integrity and his focus on the essentials, Wainwright sought to perfect the iconic design of the Leica M camera with an aesthetic that marries purity with function. The ‘Stealth Edition’ of the Leica M Monochrom is quite possibly the most discreet camera on the market today, with both camera and lens dressed in an unassuming black matte finish and minimal branding to eliminate any distractions from the purity and integrity of the design. Only the most important engravings for photographic settings are highlighted on both the camera and lens, each crafted with a with a striking glow in dark fluorescent paint for optimal use in low-light situations. A jet-black, extremely smooth cowhide leather trim adds a layer of texture to the camera and excellent grip for the on-the-go photographer.

The ‘Stealth Edition’ set maintains all the hallmark features of the original M Monochrom (Typ 246) and Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH. lens. The sensor of the Leica M Monochrom is liberated from color filters, recording only luminance values to capture light with unparalleled sharpness and integrity, even at high ISO ranges. Along with its low susceptibility to image noise, bright viewfinder and rangefinder, ultra-quiet shutter release, and unique design, the ‘Stealth Edition’ set enhances the pursuit to “see in the dark” by broadening horizons for available-light photography and the creation of dynamic atmospheric images.

Meanwhile, the lens has the classic street photographer’s focal length of 35 mm and impresses with high imaging performance and uniquely pleasing bokeh. Despite its high speed and exceptional image quality, its dimensions are astoundingly compact. Paired with this lens, the Leica M cameras become extremely compact, versatile and elegant photographic tools.

The Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) ‘Stealth Edition’ will be on sale from March 20, 2018. The edition is strictly limited to only 125 camera sets worldwide, each of which bears a distinctive serial number. The set also includes a comfortable, black fabric carrying strap, a metal front cap for the lens and a certificate of authenticity.

Stealth Campers and DIY RVs: 15 Creatively Converted Vans

sportsmobile van 4

Lurking in a windowless white van gets significantly less creepy when you’ve custom-outfitted the interior with wood flooring, storage space, a kitchenette and a queen-sized bed – right? At least, it does for most of these creative conversions. Typically using standard cargo vans or the taller, newer Sprinter vans as a base, these DIY camper projects often emphasize stealth, so you can park them in urban areas next to a bunch of work vans and stay overnight without anyone batting an eye or calling the cops. While some definitely blend right in, others are a bit more conspicuous once you lift the suspension, add all-terrain tires and otherwise turn them into off-roading beasts.

Taking a scroll through Adam Nawrot’s Instagram feed might just make you question what you’re doing with your life. The photographer purchased a used NYPD crime scene investigation van for $ 2,200, custom-built out the interior by hand, and now uses it as a home base for extensive travels across the United States. He’s got kayaks strapped to the top, bikes mounted on the front, solar panels on the roof, drawers full of climbing gear, and room for up to five friends to travel with him. His adventures loo pretty epic, and he clearly has quite an eye for capturing them.

Filmmaker Zach Both converted a work van, too, this one a decade-old Chevy with pop-out panels that happen to make perfect camper windows. He designed and built the kitchen area and bed platform, and salvaged wood from a 19th century church in Cleveland for the finishing treatments. The space is now used as both a mobile home and a work studio. Both offers a free guide called ‘The Vanual’ for anyone who wants to DIY their own camper van.

Sportsmobile Heavy-Duty Van Conversions

If the typical camper van just isn’t quite rugged and badass enough for you, Sportsmobile can probably help you out with that, assuming you have $ 100K to spend. The company customizes Mercedes Sprinters, Ford Transits, Dodge Promasters and Chevy vans into serious adventure vehicles with pop-up tops, heavy-duty cargo racks and contemporary interiors designed to their customers’ specifications, and you can even get 4×4 versions.

Solar Powered Home on Wheels

A young couple transformed a 16-year-old VW van into a sweet and simple solar-powered home they use to travel through Southern Europe and Morocco. Considering that the interior of this type of van is much smaller than that of a cargo or conversion van, they did an incredible job making use of the space, adding a kitchen, lots of storage and a pull-out bed.

Minivan Camper for an Italian Woman and Her Dog

This conversion uses an even smaller vehicle as a base, ending up with just enough space for an Italian woman and her dog to travel Europe. Marina Piro dreamed of seeing the world, but didn’t want to leave her dog, Odie, behind. She turned a 2001 Renault Kangaroo Van into ‘Pam the Van,’ insulating the floor, adding a fold-out bed and a tiny kitchen. As you can probably imagine, traveling in a van with a giant hairy dog has its complications, but it sounds like Pam is having a lot of fun.

Hidden Addition: Stealth NYC Penthouse is Invisible from Streets Below

stealth-roof

Unseen above the restored cast-iron facade of this 1857 residential structure in Tribeca, a stunning modern loft extends the building’s livable space, its form responding directly to lines of sight.

Designed by WORKac and known as the Stealth Building, the addition had to work with the existing facade — to preserve its appearance, rendering it invisible became the obvious approach.

In order to accomplish this clever act of concealment, all angles of view and shadows cast had to be accounted for. In turn, these informed the shape of the angular extension. Tracing lines of visibility across facade features of adjacent buildings, the designers derived a roof line that would work with the project goals.

All of this naturally shaped the interior spaces as well, creating dramatic diagonal lines that carry through the various rooms.

The fifth-floor pop-up features sleeping quarters, entertaining and dining spaces, as well as a secluded terrace tucked behind the pediment to provide privacy for residents. The former elevator bulkhead has been converted to contain a hut tub servicing the deck as well.

Slide & Hide: Stealth Staircases Save Space in Micro-Suites

modular space saving interior

Maximizing usable space in a series of compact short-term apartments, these retractable steps slip back into a wall, all but disappearing beneath lofted bedroom areas when not needed. Drawers and other storage slots are designed around the dimensions of the zigzag shape created by the profile of the stairs while the railing above sits flush with the bedroom space divider.

Driving these space-saving retrofits is a desire to make hotel rooms feel more like homes, particularly since many guests of Zoku in Amsterdam end up staying for longer than a typical traveler would.

Each of the 133 units (270 square feet each) redesigned by Concrete features a similar set of unconventional amenities: a secret desk tucked beneath the bed, a slatted wood divider providing both privacy and light to the bedroom area above, hidden stairs that slide into the wall for access and a pair of suspended gymnast hoops hanging from the ceiling.

A combination of black and white, wood and bamboo, ceramic and organic elements help the spaces feel more variegated, like a house populated with individual furnishings and objects over time rather than a place made by a corporate hotel.

From the owners and architects: “A room at Zoku is much more than just a hotel room. It is a spacious micro-apartment. As space is becoming scarcer in urban areas, the way we use it sustainably to meet long-term accommodation requirements is more and more relevant. Smart solutions that create the opportunity to use less square metres and facilitate 24/7 multifunctional use are needed.”

Stealth Structures: 10 Buildings That Aren’t What They Seem

23 Apr

[ By Steph in Travel & Urban Exploration. ]

superhero supply

How many houses that you pass each day aren’t really houses at all, but just realistic-looking facades hiding a secret function? Speakeasies and secret clubs masquerade as run-down stores in New York, faux suburban residences hide unexpected operations and weird-looking towers all over Los Angeles contain something you’d never expect.

Top Secret Bar You’d Never Find On Your Own
secret toy shop bar 1

secret toy shop bar 2

New York City hides all sorts of secrets, among them a number of fake storefronts hiding secret bars, clubs and meeting spaces. Scouting New York listed out eight of the best, including ‘Lower East Side Toys’ on Norfolk Street in Manhattan. It definitely doesn’t look like much from the street, and the door marked with a peeling sign that says ‘Deliveries Only’ seems innocuous enough. But those in the know step right through into The Back Room, a speakeasy-style bar. The takeaway here is that if you think a New York City business is a front for something else, you’re probably right.

Fake Brooklyn Brownstone Hides an Underground Portal

secret brooklyn brownstone 1

secret brooklyn brownstone 2

secret brooklyn brownstone 3

If you’re very observant, you might have noticed when passing by that the windows in this otherwise normal-looking Brooklyn brownstone are curiously blacked out. But that’s just about the only clue that anything is amiss – unless you walk right up to the door and peer through the crack, which reveals not a home but rather a concrete-lined, windowless industrial space. 58 Joralemon Street stands directly above the tracks for New York City’s subway lines 4 and 5, and functions as a ventilation shaft. The MTA disguised it as a courtesy to the residential neighbors.

Chicago Mansion Is Really a Power Substation

Screen Shot 2015-04-21 at 7.40.54 PM

A faux Georgian mansion stands at a Chicago intersection with front doors that don’t open and windows that are never illuminated, no matter the time of day. It’s actually a substation for electrical company Commonwealth Edison, which goes to some trouble to camouflage many of these typically unsightly structures when they’re located in conspicuous spots. This one was designed by Stanley Tigerman, former director of the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Triggerman made it as authentically Georgian as he could, down to the sturdy brickwork pattern that will help it stand the test of time with minimal maintenance. The blacked-out windows are actually vents.

Superhero Supply Store Doesn’t Really Sell Superhero Supplies
secret superhero supply 1

secret superhero supply 2

You might suspect that something’s amiss with the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co, given that the products on display in the window and listed on a card outside include antimatter, a collapsible portal, galactic compasses and manuals for all sorts of fantastical weapons that don’t really exist. If you know the secret of the place once inside, you’ll head directly for a secret door hidden in a bookcase, which leads not to the headquarters of the Justice League but rather a student learning and activity center focusing on literacy. A viewing portal in the wall gives visitors a glimpse into this space. Disappointed? You can actually buy a number of products from the shop and the website, including superhero disguise kits, costumes, and even one-gallon cans of immortality. There’s even a musical inspired by it.

Swiss Fortress in Disguise
secret fortress villa rose

Would you ever guess that this little pink house in Switzerland is really a fortress? Villa Rose is located on the Toblerone defensive line, built to defend the country from invasion during World War II. If you opened the garage door you’d come face-to-face with a pair of gigantic cannons, a third hidden deeper inside. The fake windows painted onto the second story would only fool onlookers from afar, but when the fortress was active, nobody would have made it close enough to notice. The Villa Rose is now open to the public as a museum.

Putting loose ends to good use, this clever piece of street-smart apparel takes advantage of the usually-hidden flip side of your standard-shaped men’s tie.

Savvy travelers know that there is no better way to look like a tourist than to pull out a map from your pocket or stare too long into your smartphone, hence this subtle and neutrally stylish alternative.

Designed and sold by Rakuten in Japan, current available cities include Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. The dotted and striped, variously-colored ties cost 6,000 yen (around $ 70 USD) – not bad for a 100% silk map that doubles as business attire.

Stealth Wear: Counter-Surveillance Fashion Protects Privacy

02 Apr

[ By Steph in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 1
The rise of surveillance technology, including face recognition software, drones, body scans and cell phones as GPS locators, has resulted in some creative attempts to elude it. Designer Adam Harvey experiments with “fashion to challenge authoritarian surveillance” in a series called Stealth Wear (via PSFK). Anti-Drone garments protect against thermal imaging, a special cell phone pocket blocks signals, and off-the-wall makeup and hair styling techniques make it hard to ID faces.

Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 2

Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 3

The Anti-Drone garments are made with a lightweight, breathable metallized fabric that reflects heat, masking the wearer’s thermal signature so they won’t show up in thermal imaging scans. Two of the designs are inspired by Muslim garments, including the burqa and scarf. “Conceptually, these garments align themselves with the rationale behind the traditional hijab and burqa: to act as ‘the veil which separates man or the world from God,’ replacing God with drone,” says Harvey.

Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 4

These garments aren’t intended to be serious gear for survivalists looking to elude The Man. They’re fashion, Harvey explains, exploring the ways in which we can interact and aestheticize our culture of rising surveillance. Technically, even the small parts that aren’t covered by the garments, like the hands and face, can give you away. The OFF Pocket, however, is definitely usable: it’s a flexible waterproof cover fitting most sizes of phones, including Nexus and iPhones, that blocks all incoming and outgoing call signals.

Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 5

Stealth Wear Anti-Drone Fashion 6

If you want to avoid facial recognition software determining your identity, you’ll have to get even more creative. Developed as his master’s thesis, Harvey’s project CV Dazzle attempted to find makeup and hair styles that would elude recognition. This collaboration between hair stylists, makeup artists and fashion designers used custom software that exposes the vulnerabilities of the OpenCV face detection algorithm, creating styles that exploit these weaknesses. The looks are definitely a bit cyber-punk, but it’s interesting to see them gain a little practicality. Check out an article on ‘how to hide from machines’ that explores more of these techniques at DISmagazine.
